Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Go somewhere else
Go somewhere else that’s worth it. I don’t know where to begin…
I’ll start by saying for the green fee I paid it’s and what the course was doesn’t match up. There’s other courses that are better and half the price of this place.
No ball washing stations anywhere! tee boxes where junk, most couldn’t identify. Greens were just as bumpy as the fairways not smooth. Both tee boxes and greens had large/tall weeds.
On top of the none existent ball washes, no water coolers, and no beverage cart.
Again there’s way cheaper places that offer better amenities and conditions than this place. They aren’t worth the $50 green fees that I paid, I would even pay $40.
TLC Needed
The course needs TLC. Fairways are super bumpy and uneven, tee boxes were overgrown with weeds and tall grass, and greens have weeds that will ruin any kind of putting line over them.
It appeared they were doing some landscaping work in a few areas, but mainly the tee boxes needed to be maintained a bit more and there were a ton of weeds everywhere!
Opening duration
Limited by the park this course is located, last tee time at 1:00pm is way too early.
Disappointing
The fairways on the front 9 were as rough as I have seen, teeth jarring! There was not much green grass, granted we had a freeze a couple of weeks ago. The greens were slow and in rough condition. Overall, we found the course disappointing.
Poorly maintained course and clubhouse
Southwyck golf course is poorly maintained. Greens and fairways are in terrible shape.
Mmm, its ok
This should be a $10 $20 course.
Layout is good but conditions are TERRIBLE.
Could be good but
Fairways remain rutted and uneven. Equal parts bone dry and muddy. Tee boxes in bad shape and greens have struggled after the recent cold. No ball washers on a course that is very pricey given the conditions. Nice chipping area at least
What a Shame
I was on my yearly golf trip and have played here before. The weather was windy and wet, but the fairways were in terrible shape--bumpy as all get-out, greens were slow, bumpy, and just did not roll well. I have played this course int he past and have never seen it in such poor shape. I hope they take care of it better once the weather improves. My advice, do not spend your money on this course.
worst conditions on everything
worst green condition, no extra restroon in the field. worst condition to approch to the club house after finishing 9th hole to use restroom
Course needs work -- lots of it!
The course is as bad as it has been in 20 years. The tee boxes are uneven and have little grass, the fairways are hard and terribly bumpy and the greens have become un-puttable.
Yes, it may be winter, but it seems that management/ownership has no interest in doing any maintenance or repair work.
I feel sorry for the very nice people who work at the course.
What a shame
There are some courses I definitely want to play again. Some courses would not be my 1st choice. SOUTHWYCK was an embarrassment for the owners. I realize it was wet and cold, but fairways almost vibrated the wheel off the cart. The greens we had to play as an automatic 2 putt because they were so bumpy and so slow.
I have played this course in the past and it was just ok, but what I just played, I will not be back.
The course was a mess. Almost needed a 4 x 4 to drive on the fairway it was like land mines went off everywhere. I will never return to this course unless it is completely rebuilt. I would consider playing for $20. Maybe.
Avoid
Currently in abysmal shape. Seems like zero effort is being made to keep up what could otherwise be a great course.
I’d play it if it was $20, but still gripe about it.
