Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Played in Dec 24’
Paid $46 thru Golf Now at 8am. Course layout was ok but conditions were some of worst I’ve seen to date. Being Houston area with high demands(so many people, big city) but low supply(little good courses comparatively). You get what you pay for.
Just Say No
No! Standing water, bumpy fairways, all greens need work! If you just want to "play golf" this would be the course!
A delightful outing
Had a great time playing with a young lad named ‘Donavan’!
Enjoyed his company immensely!
Course a little wet in places, but we agreed from the beginning to move our balls out of ‘the mud’ whenever we found ourselves in it.
Good for the average golfer
This course is as close to average as one can think of.
Our round was helped by beautiful weather. There were multiple spots off-green that were sloppy and squishy. I don’t know offhand when the course last received rain. The fairways and greens all played very fast. Both also seemed fairly well maintained. Divots were filled and the layout was nice. For the price it was about what I expected. One of our golfers was running late due to construction and a wreck on 288, and the woman at the desk was incredibly helpful in making sure we were able to still get our round in. I’ll definitely be back to golf here again.
Straightforward Place to Practice
Staff was great and the pace of play was spot on. The greens need help with a lot of foreign grass in the greens. No surprises and no sand traps.
It was okay
Some greens were better than others but all had some degree of weeds and/or sand coming through but was recently cut. Photos feature bunkers, no bunkers on any of the 18 holes. Fairways vs roughs were indistinguishable; All the same length. Construction on a few holes but nothing too bad. Some of the holes fairways were incredibly rough, appears droughts caused large cracking and ripples that were never repaired. Layout was cool with a few water features and dog legs, houses on either side on almost every hole though. Staff was very friendly. Play pace was fast as i went early on a rainy day. Your results may vary.
If it was cheaper id go back but they are asking average to premium price for sub par maintained course.
Not for free
I was looking for a cheap quick round. Paid 17.00 bucks with hotdeal. Paid 17 bucks too much. Its an absolute dumpster fire. I dont think i would play here for free and a free 12 pack with playmate companionship. Break your back fairways , greens dead spots and weeds. Its a running joke in the houston golf community when brought up in conversation. Waste your hard earned money if you want 🫡
No coarse restrooms nor drinking water
Close to houses an piles of dirt from water line repair on the approach.
Need work
Greens were in bad condition. Weed infested and sand repaid in spot.
Fairway was torn up with active construction.
Some teeboxs were not mowed and the grass was about 1 1/12 inch high
Unacceptable shape
Greens are full of weeds and are just in terrible shape.
Fairways are horrendous.
Tee boxes are terrible as well.
I would only book this course as an absolute last resort and if you can get it for $30. It is not worth anything more.
The golf carts are STRONG
> I played alone (no one front or back).
> The staff members are very friendly and professional.
> The course design is great-- I have played here dozens of times in 20 or so years.
> I played here today because I was trying out new irons and didn't care about conditions, especially the greens.
BUT:
> The greens are generally in terrible shape.
> The fairways are so hard and bouncy (uneven) that it's a wonder the carts don't fall apart.
Late 2024
Course was in very good shape: some plumbing issues were being addressed on most of the holes; all within 100 yards of their respective Greens.
However, the Greens continue to deteriorate. Unfortunate! Obviously they need money and a lot of work!
