Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Really poor conditions
Greens had a bunch of weeds, and sandy patches. Fno signs for next hole, or what hole you were on.
Don’t waste your money
This course should be closed, greens are full of crab grass and are in terrible condition. Can’t even putt on them. Fairways are hard as a rock with cracks that could swallow your ball. Pro shop staff should have said something about course conditions. Paid for 18 but only muttered thru 9 and left. Have played the course before and it was in much more playable conditions.
crap greens and bumpy front nine
conditions were dried out and I've never had such a bumpy ride as I did here on the front 9 holes. greens were rough
Cracked fairways and greens with weeds
I went here not expecting much change in the conditions since my last visit. This course could use a makeover. Water the fairways and fix the greens, and this will be a great course.
Sadly So bad
Don’t like saying this but honestly the front 9 are the worst condition holes I’ve ever played
Feel for the greens keeper as they are obviously having crab grass problems with greens which are awful don’t bother putting
The fairways in front 9 are so bumpy you will have to use cart path or you will loose everything out of your cart bag dropped off shaken loose drinks bottle As well
Back 9 much was better if I’m honest
Thing is club shop never mentioned conditions I would not have bothered if I’d known
Should have realized when I drove up and say nobody on course in a Saturday??
Hope the sort it because it’s a great layout with good features but won’t be back until I see that’s it’s been sorted
Poor condition
The course was in horrible shape. Looked like they haven't watered in months. Greens were in bad shape too. Weren't mowed.
Greens were in terrible shape
Course needs major maintenance. Arnold Palmer would very upset. I’ve played this course many times over the past 20 years. Worst shape in the last few years.
Golf course in very poor condition
I was in Huston for few days and like most golfers I find time to play 18 at great course.
The staff was great, but the golf course was in very poor condition.
It was so bad, that I paid for 18 but left after 9.
Not Worth the Money
This course is in horrible condition. You can have a perfect hit in the middle of the fairway but never find the ball because the grass is probably 7” long and uncut. The greens are in such bad condition putting is impossible. Not a single water jug on the entire course had water so if you plan on playing here bring extra balls and your own water.
Course needs lots of work
This course has seen better days. And surely will again, when management/investors pay attention to it again.
Greens are awful-- full of crabgrass. To try legitimate putts, we had to move the ball to a line that was not full of crabgrass.
The fairways are in dire need of water and flattening out.
Not returning until there is improvement.
Chess Dr
The course is nice and user friendly. The putting greens (below average condition)needs to be worked on.
Shoddy Southwyck
Course lacks an adequate irrigation system. Greens were infested with strange grass, bumpy or sporing bald spots in dire need of attention. The uneven ride across the fairways was jarring. Hard, sunbaked fairways precluded taking a divot. Didn't expect much for lower tier green fees, but this course requires an extensive renovation to recapture past glory.
Course is entering point of no return!
I live near Southwyck and have watched the course die a slow death over the past 10 yrs and after seeing it yesterday I fear it's nearing the point of no return. Conditions are already so bad that it would likely take an entire year of TLC and no play to bring it back. I can't understand how they think they can attract a buyer by making the course look as terrible as possible. I'm including some pics of what used to be the 17th green. It's so sad to see such gross mis-management of a once beautiful course.
