Nice and early! Photo submitted by mikefish10 on 09/21/2020
Poor greens
Very poor greens spoiled what could have been a great early monday morning round. Rest of course was okay..some of the rough was very long punishing any wayward drives
Decent course but greens a disgrace
I think this is a slightly better than average course in that they have good open fairways, very long holes, good variety with water etc but completely let down by grassless, lumpy “greens”. It’s almost impossible to tell where they start as they are just patches of dirt. I accept that the weather has been dry and so some allowances have to be made but other courses in the same area have managed to maintain theirs to a much higher standard. Ruined what was otherwise a challenging and fun round.
Good course, fun and varied layout, average greens
I've played this course 3 times in the past month and really enjoy it. Long challenging fairways (especially as it's an open windy course) so you can really smash the driver. Quite hilly, fun and varied holes, so you get to use the whole arsenal. Great value for the price you pay. The only thing that needs some work are the greens as they are hard and bumpy and don't make for a good putting experience. Can't comment on the clubhouse facilities as it's been closed due to Covid.
Terrible
Massively gone down hill.
Its been run into the ground.
Greens terrible
All bunkers under repair
Poor Tee box littered with tees' & rubbish.
Its basically a deserted golf course.
Inlands Links style not in good shape
Inlands Links style, with an easy walk.
Sadly most of the greens were diseased with bare patches, they could also do with watering very dry. Also the fairways weren't in good shape? All the Bunkers were GUR. We pay £10 for a 11:30am midweek tee time I wouldn't pay anymore.
Hasn’t been maintained in years
Greens were unplayable but staff were pleasant when you arrived at the course. No doubt the course has great potential but clearly it is no longer being cared for.
Struggling
Played this course twice since it has reopened, a week apart. The first time the course was in an adequate condition. Given the lockdown and everything happening, allowances were made. Greens were ok, little bumpy and dry. Bunkers were GUR.
Come back a week later... the prices have increased due to the demand. The greens are now unplayable, not been watered it seemed. And the fairways hadn’t been cut so was looking more like the first cut.
The pace of play was appalling on both occasions and the two-ball and not touching the flag rules seemed to not apply here either. It’s a shame as layout and design of the course is nice and is reasonably priced if the condition was improved.
Greens like cricket pitches
I've played four courses since golf has returned and this is the only course where the "Greens" were cracked, Completely brown and as hard as concrete. They have clearly not been watered in weeks.
Asked for a trolley but was told not allowed - Yet there were plenty on the course and every place I've played has no objection to them being used.
It was ten quid, So you get what you pay for i guess. And if you like your ball flying off solid dead "Greens" you'll like this place.
Nice course, greens need water desperately!
Nice lay out friendly staff, well maintained apart from the greens that looked like they hadn’t been watered in at least a month, dead and bear in most places- real let down. guessing there’s a problem with water system as pop up sprinklers were undisturbed and had dry solid ground building up around them. Wouldn’t return until problem is fixed as it’s almost impossible to putt.
Awfull course
The course is in a terrible state! Not sure where the fairways and rough start and finish. Unable to see the difference from fairway to greens!!!!
Greens are so bad and scorched, possibly more water on the sun! If you go in the rough say goodbye to your ball. No sand In the bunkers so do not play out of them unless you dislike your clubs!
Greens need work
My only criticism was the greens all of which were very dry and bumpy
Aside from that it was a nice layout with a mixture of hole types
Definitely looking to play at Blake’s again
Good coarse
Needs to be watered, very dry conditions and seems that there is a problem with the up keep of the water system
Coronavirus Escape
Was nice to get out and play with a friend.
Fairways were in good condition, although the greens were bear and lacked watering over the lockdown which was a shame.
Previously the course was in really good condition, less so now.
Unbelievably Good
The course was playing excellently, especially in the light of the recent wet and poor weather. The greens and tee boxes were well maintained, and the greens quite fast.
Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the club house facilities were very limited, and of course the restaurant was closed.
However, we had a very pleasant round on a very sunny, if somewhat windy day. (and I did not lose any balls on the "island" hole, actually hitting par for the first time - result !)
Decent Condition and Great Value For Money
Played the course today, apart from a couple of ropey tee boxes and bunkers, we found the course very enjoyable to play. Very good condition of green, if anything a bit too fast, but better that than churned up.
Good for the price
I always enjoy playing this course, as it is an open links course. It was a windy day so a little more challenging. We sped round, without any hold ups or slow play. Some of the greens were a little disappointing, with bare patches, and bumps. We visited whilst the course was emerging from lockdown, so the facilities and amenities were limited, but this was to be expected. Will definitely play the course again in the near future, especially at such a great rate.
Time to look again at Blakes
I have been playing this course for the last 15 months and have despaired at some of the reviews online.
My experience has been positive; whilst acknowledging the issues caused by the failure of the watering system in 2018, a new greenkeeper and staff have worked very hard to rectify this. The greens and fringes remain a work in progress, but the improvements are definately being seen. New tree planting programme and work around the course in general has maintained the good conditions outside of greens and fringes.
The course has an excellent layout, is challenging to almost all golfers, particularly in the wind it was designed for as an inland links, and the green fees reflect that the course is on a journey of rapid improvement.
The club has ambitious plans for development of the site, and increasing the facilities for players, and I feel that this is a great time to give Blakes another look and see for yourself.
A good first impression
The first hole felt quite exposed in windy conditions but the course improved and the wind dropped. Staff were helpful but the facilities appeared to be operating with temporary arrangements
