Nice and early! Photo submitted by mikefish10 on 09/21/2020
A good first impression
The first hole felt quite exposed in windy conditions but the course improved and the wind dropped. Staff were helpful but the facilities appeared to be operating with temporary arrangements
good value for money
Blakes is not the most difficult of courses and they are currently trying to work on improving the condition of the greens. However, the staff are very friendly, it offers a good opportunity for players of average ability to enjoy a round, and is very fairly priced.
Greens shockingly bad, owners attitude worse !
Played there on Saturday. Greens were the worst I have seen. Spoke to staff and they were useless. Got a call back from the manager/owner and he couldn't have been ruder. Told me that I am the only golfer in 1000 that thought the course was bad (online reviews would back me on this) and if I don't like the course condition then there's nothing to talk about as I wouldn't want to play there anyway.
Told me thanks for your feedback but there's nothing more to say and put the phone down on me.
WOW, what a fantastic way to treat your customers !!!! Needs to adjust his attitude.
SHOCKING!!!!!
I cannot stress enough how bad the greens are at Toot Hill.... After two holes we decided just to give 2 Putt Gimmies once you hit the green. Although I very rarely three putt that was generous on these greens, You could be a foot away and still miss due to the state of them. We felt robbed as there is no warning that the greens are so bad. To take even £5 from people is robbery! let alone £20... A prime example as to why I would rather pay £40, £50 or even £60 to play on a real course
Such a shame as the course is a reasonable layout....
Tip to the club if they ever read these reviews.... I doubt they do as every comment is a bad one...
Make your greens smaller, they are easier to maintain..... until they improve, how about put the pin positions on a section of the green that actually has grass on it.
Awful greens
Although the weather was perfect, the state of the greens is a joke. How they can warrant charging people to play on them is beyond me. Bumpy, dead and covered in sand. Putting was an absolute lottery.
Open Links Style Course
This is a pretty interesting course that is not too challenging (apart from the 8th hole on an island !). Its a links style course so nice and open with minimal trees, although the deep rough will still catch you out. Good club house facilities and food,.
Disappointing greens
Upon arrival the course appeared to be in a similar condition to normal. However when we made it onto the first green it was apparent that the greens were not up to standard. They were very bumpy and putting became a lottery. I'm not sure of the reason but it was a little disappointing.
I love the layout of the course and condition in general is good so hopefully the greenkeepers will be able to rectify the issue soon.
All good apart from the greens
Great hilltop location and a nice variety of holes. But greens were very patchy and bobbly compared to my previous visit. I had difficulty judging putting distance over the different grass/earth conditions.
Greens are the worst I’ve ever played
The fairways are in good condition but the greens are awful...absolutely awful! Filled with sand and patches of long long grass.
Made it unplayable and not even worth the £10 I paid!
course needs watering
the course is very dry ad the greens are in poor condition because they need watering.
Amazing value with a buggie
Blake’s still has the potential to be a great course I’m not sure what’s happened to it over the years the greens used to be amazing. The layout is great and ot is a true challenge especially when the wind is up off the back tees. At the moment the cost with a buggie can be a bargain how ever the greens are not pretty and will probably cost you quite a few shots over the 18 holes. I have just finished a round and we still enjoyed it. I think a 6 over par round could have been a lot less with decent greens. All in all it was good it was a lovely summers day the wind was low and they had a £10 all you can eat BBQ or a roast on a Sunday which is great food. Please spend some money on the greens I don’t see why they can’t be great again like they use to be many years ago.
Good experience
Was very good overall but most of the greens was spiked and sanded so we did not get a true roll putting. Beautiful course layout and very testing for all abilities. Would like to return when the greens have settled down.
days golf with my son
even though the course was busy play wasn't held up to long and the weather was nice all in all a good round will be back
An experience I will never forget
If I had to sum up this golf course in one phrase I would have to say ‘out of this world’ because the green-keeper must be from another planet. It’s quite simply unlike any other course I’ve ever played. ‘Unique’ does not do it justice. Many courses claim to have a course that challenges all levels of golfers but this one REALLY DOES!
Without doubt the strangest element (of which there are many) are the greens. I personally believe that whoever maintains these greens deserves a medal. The foresight they have is truly mind-blowing – industry leading in fact. Most golf courses have greens that roll fairly straight (boring I know!) not this one though. Through a fantastic combination of completely spike marked greens and strangely placed pins it is simply impossible to get the ball into the hole.
Don’t like golf, well don’t worry, Blakes Golf Club also provides a great orienteering experience for all the family. Guessing your way around the course until you (eventually) find your way to the next hole really is fun and a marketing opportunity missed by many other ‘top quality’ golf clubs.
Blakes Golf Course – an experience unlike any other in golf. The experience was so fantastic that we left after 11 holes, why not see how far you can get?
some great holes
the course has had some bad reviews but under new management they seem to be gitting it in great shape keep it up
Cheap day out
The pro shop was empty and the score cards were paper photo copies so no course layout or local rules. The greens are poor but we're being worked on and the whole course needs money spent on it. The layout and length of the course are not bad so overall bearing in mind the price it is good value
Best round I've had score wise
Can only give it five stars after that round. I'll be a pro soon.
Very Nice Course
Saw this on tee off times for £12 so me and my son Teddy thought we would give it a go. Was very surprised on how nice it was considering how cheap it was, some lovely holes over water , a 525 par 5. all in all would play again
Greens are slow, need signage between holes
Links type course, needs signage between holes, players in front got loss twice.
Greens were very slow on sand base.
Good layout but needs some Tlc
Such a shame this course needs some tlc used to like coming here but won't be returning anytime soon greens are in bad condition very bumpy although it is very cheap would rather pay more for better course we played as a four ball and walked we were behind a two ball using a buggy but had to wait on every tee box
Having played Blakes through some of the worst weather the course, itself was surprisingly good.
The fairways had water on understandably, greens well they was exceptional, quick true and a lot of work being done on the course as well.
I for one cannot wait to play Blakes in the better weather would like to thank the green staff for all the work they are doing to keep the course moving forward, to make this course one of if not the best in Essex
