Not bad for a quick game
Alright little course . You enter a room and sign in via a book, no pen or pencil to write , so scrambled back to the car to try find a pen( usually have about 40 pencils in my bag)
I felt very out of place at this course. It was although I was looked down upon as I wasn’t a regular . Seems a very locals only course. The course itself is nice. For a first timer a little confusing with some holes been played twice but one guy was nice enough to explain (not like the other couple of stuck up gentlemen) who pretty much snubbed me . If your in the area for work and want a quick round then probably worth a quick one, just make sure you wear your top hat and waist coat. The players are no reflection on the course though. A little steep at £25 for 18 holes . I would say a £20 max course especially mid week . Can go down 5 miles away and get a 18 mid week for £20 and would say a slightly better course. Sadly wouldn’t return , but wouldn’t not recommend the course to anyone .
Nice course, good round
Played here with a mate. Fairways and greens are well looked after (not that I hit either in reg). There’s no reception to speak of, it’s an honesty policy where you pay your fees and take a ticket (or say that you booked online in the sign-in book).
Course itself was decent - there are a few shared fairways between holes on the front and back which I wasn’t aware of, but didn’t impact the pace of play much (only had to wait a couple
Times)
Would recommend this course
Price of play
Course great layout and pace of play, course needs some attention from what looks like damage to fairways. Price of play should be less than £25. Would play again of course improved and price lowered
Poor organisation
Went early alone as a random round, and loads of free gn slots so guessed it would be a quiet day. Course was ok, 11 front and 7 back, only one crossover hole, 18 plays through 1st. When I got onto back 7 it was packed. Spoke to greens keeper (lovely guy) who says locals just rock up and play. Ended up playing 13 and leaving otherwise would have been there forever.
11 hole 18 hole course buy definitely worth a visit!
Played this course as a 2 ball on a Saturday morning. Was fairly quiet. Checked in ourselves in a small room and away we went. 11 hole course where you play some holes twice but from different tees. Tee boxes and fairways were very good. Greens had just had a bit of work done but still ran true just a little slow but in normal circumstances I’m sure are also very good. Layout is mostly just up and down but with challenging tee shots into narrow tree lined fairways and a raised green and double green on some holes it’s far from boring!
Would definitely recommend for anyone of any ability. Could be tricky for higher handicappers but also will tighten your game up with the tall trees and quite small greens to hit..
Don’t be put off by only 11 holes! Definitely worth a visit!
Friendly Gem in the heart of the city
Well maintained course, excellent value for money, friendly staff and players - very welcoming.
Nice course in good condition
I play this course regularly when I’m visiting York. I live in the south east where I am a club member however we have a place in York and visit all the time and I always bring my clubs. Staff are always helpful and accommodating. The course is always in a good condition, lush fairways and well maintained greens and although it plays quite short it can be a good test especially a couple of long par 4’s and a well placed tee shot is needed on others. Visitor green fee’s (£25) are fair. I’ve marked course layout down as you play 3-9 twice off different tee’s but otherwise the layout is perfectly ok. Club facilities are very limited, which is another minus. Well worth a round if you are considering it.
Small with holes you play twice but very tricky
The course was in good condition and each hole was tight with small greens. It’s a small course and it makes you think hard on what to play. You do play some holes twice but I just thought it was a great knock about. If your looking for an amazing typical 18 holes then this is not the course. This is perfect to jump on and tighten up your iron play
Heworth Golf Course
I have played this course many times as a visitor. It is only 11 holes so to play 18 you have to play 3-9 again off different tees. That is the only downside to the course. On the positives it is always in nice condition although not too challenging. I’ll continue to play this course as I enjoy it. Good value for money and club staff and green keepers are very friendly.
A tricky first time in windy conditions
The first time we played the course and initial thoughts are that it's a quirky course with a unique layout. The 1st and 9th/18th share a fairway which at busy times could cause congestion. So you play 1 to 11 then rejoin the course at Hole 3 for 12 to 18 which again could cause congestion depending on how busy it is.
With it being Autumn the course was wet which is to be expected and this has left the fairways and greens very soft and muddy in places but in the dry summer would probably play very nicely. The biggest annoyance of the round was the amount of leaf fall on the greens and fairways meaning you were losing balls due to them being hidden under leaves etc but that said you can't blame the course for that. It has good yardage, im a very high handicap and I felt it had challenges because of the distance.
The layout of the holes rewards a straight hitting golfer as many of the holes are doglegs so being able to put the ball where you want keeps your score down.
The clubhouse is traditional and although we didn't use it it looks like it has good social space and bar although on the small side I feel like it would be a homely feel.
Value for money compared to hot deals was a little pricy for what it is but given a good day an enjoyable round is to be had. A revisit is on the cards at some point but for now the Autumn leaves and woodland layout is hiding what feels like a challenging little course
Teddy has an unbelievable round
The greens were in excellent condition. The ball ran true when putting and stopped well when pitching .
The fairways were good and the only minor issue was the first hole. If people are advised that it’s a dogleg right , rather than thinking it’s straight. Good tight fairways and unfortunately with my draw , I ended up in the trees . Although it’s an 11 hole course the tee position make a big difference. Well worthwhile playing
My nephew (17) played an unbelievable round of 89 off a 27 handicap.
A little gem
The course was interesting,in good condition and a pleasure to play
An unfortunate layout
Nicely kept course, reasonably enjoyable to play but hugely let down by the layout. It’s essentially an 11 hole course where you play 6-7 holes twice but from about a 20 ft different angle.
There’s a par 3 which like I say is played twice with two flags on the same green.
I wouldn’t mind but the cost to play doesn’t reflect this.
