What a pleasure of a course

Matfen is split into 3 x 9

Hole courses and a separate par 3 course and a driving range. It also has a short game area and nets.

The original course was lovely in brilliant condition.

The Dewlaw was in good condition and although not as tricky as the Original course it had a few nice holes.

The facilities are excellent - even in covid. Cannot recommend more highly.

Great course

Lovely course and very quiet at lunchtime when I played. Great value also compared to the normal green fee, a bit wet was the only negative. Nice coffe and bacon bun to go also!

Expensive for a weekday, and no warning of green condition!

Played as part of a gift to father in law. Initially booked over the phone directly, and for mid-morning on a Friday, to book a cancelable tee time it was 35quid?! I did that as the forecast was so unreliable, then did cancel, and rebook with golf now for £24. Which is just ok. I really don't understand why they wouldn't lower prices and semi-fill what turned out to be a pretty empty course. £40 for a 2-ball would be a better mark.

The golf anyway,

Douglas 9- every green bar 1 had been hollow-tined. Zero warning that this was the case. Very slow, sandy and bobbly. so much so our scores were hit. They improved on the standing stone 9, with i think just 2 done. But not good enough. The course is in lovely mature woodland and can be really enjoyable. It's a few years since I last played it, and the general standard of upkeep visible around the course has gone way downhill unfortunately. Impossible rough in play also all over the place, where you can't find your ball let alone play it. I don't think the course knows what it wants to be anymore! I'm off 13, and shot 89 I think.. Mainly through 2 lost balls and putts that jumped off course. My playing partner, also off 13 but older, must have lost 6-7 balls, which can ruin a day. He didn't play that badly. It shouldn't really be the case... A good test is one thing but I think a course like this needs to be more player-friendly. I get the impression it's down to a cost thing rather than design, that the rough is so prominent and punishing, but a heads-up, especially when calling direct over the phone, about green condition should be a must! Otherwise, parking, clubhouse and staff all good. Though the shop is very small and I'd say understocked too. Nice pitch n putt there and driving range facility next door for anyone who's never been.

Great fun.

Great fun to play here. There were a few greens that had patches and bobbled your ball but the Fairways were fantastic. Tee boxes were well maintained and have some amazing views from the elevated tees.

Staff were polite and friendly and the club house was very good.

All in all a great day out and well worth the money.
