Golfer Reviews
Disappointing
Play the Welcombe a lot and usually good value at £40. Warmed up on the range £2.50 for 25 balls is not a problem but when half of them are cracked in 2 it’s a little annoying. Chipping area and practice green in decent condition. Course was in good condition all things considered. The weather has been extreme to say the least so good to see most of the tees, approaches and greens looking well maintained. Some greens were a little beat up but not too bad for £40. Most disappointing thing was the 5 hours it took to play. No issue with lots of 4-balls going out but why not space the tee times out a bit more for everybody’s enjoyment. We waited on every tee from the 4th to the 18th and the groups being we’re getting more and more annoyed. Tried to explain it was nobody in particular but it ruined our round. £17 for 2 pints and a packet of crisps is also criminal!
Good course
Really good course, but as there was a inter club event going on pace was really slow came off after 15 holes as had already taken 4 hrs
In need of investment and incredibly slow play
We arrived and ordered some range balls to get warmed up. There were quite a few balls that were completely split, the mats had huge caverns in so you couldn’t get the ball to sit outside of the void. The range was too short.
The course is lovely, the cart however had a snapped key and packed up completely on the 10th tee. Thankfully the pro came and swapped it out which was a nice touch.
We gave up on the 11th as the pace of play was unbearable. It shouldn’t take 3 hours to play 10 holes!
On the right day this is a great place to go, I’ve played here before and enjoyed it but this trip was a disaster from start to finish.
Waste of money
Course was just ok. Pro shop staff member rude. The guy starting you on first tee was nice and gave good advice. Pace of play was awful with no one having any etiquette to let smaller groups play through. Staff in halfway house tried to charge us £32 instead of £17 for drinks & snack. 4 groups often all on one hole at a time. Not enough sand in bunkers. Ended up walking off despite travelling nearly 2 hours to visit. Very disappointed, waste of money.
Slow round defeated lovely course
Course was great. Testing holes and fairway, greens that made you think but ran true. Beautiful setting and views.
Staff on the day unhelpful and not welcoming. Range ball machine broken ‘I’m not an engineer’ he said, but only when asked. No apology no suggestions, ended up picking up balls with a few others before hitting a few. Having a couple of nets would be a great contingency option to consider.
Course packed with a morning comp and afternoon societies. Pace of play slow and after 4 hours and 20 walked off to the clubhouse before playing the 16th!
Nice course but the bunkers and walkways need some attention - they are a bit tired
Great for a visit
I opted for this course passing through the area for work with a colleague, cheap rates and promising photos swayed us. Course hole layout is good and there has been clear though in the aesthetic aspects of the grounds, routes between holes are a little too long and disrupt flow of play in my own opinion.
excellent practice facility setup, putting greens, chipping greens and a driving range.
We were also rejected hiring a buggy despite 6-7 being sat unused, assuming it was on a book only syatem but would have been nice and maybe improved our round experience. course is hilly but it is not the worst I have played on in the regard. greens firm and fast bunker quality varied, some nice and soft others hard and could do with a little turning/changing of sand.
overall happy to have played it, will I be back, I do not think so
Hidden gem
Beautiful location, and very cinematic. The course looks pretty straightforward but if you stray off the fairway you'll be playing out of short but thick rough. If you can find you're ball that is, as you can easily loose it, so keep your eyes on them. There are a few blind shots, good shots are rewarded, poor shots well you may never see that ball again. The staff were great, friendly and willing to give course advise. I'd happily play here again.
Tee boxes very patchy and uneven, greens were ok, but slow. Pace of play ok considering it was a bank holiday. Would definitely play again
Picturesque
The course was well maintained and you enjoy some beautiful views of the surrounding areas.
Greens and fairways were well looked after.
Would definitely return
Great experience at Welcombe Golf Club. The course is in fantastic condition—well-kept fairways, smooth greens, and a layout that’s both enjoyable and challenging.
What really makes it stand out is the atmosphere. Friendly members, a relaxed, laid-back vibe, and none of the stuffiness you sometimes get elsewhere.
Quality golf with a genuinely welcoming feel. Highly recommend.
Only slight negative.. We had a 5 ball in front of us at one point which was strange and held up play. I think things were moving slowly anyway but that didn't help. Nobody came out to sort it.
Lovely first time playing
Really enjoyed the course. Arrived early and checked in - very relaxed atmosphere.
Hit some balls on the driving range - very petty but the only negative was the state of the range balls!
Course was lovely - a little hilly but worth the effort for some of the amazing views. Some work being done on the course but didn't spoil the round at all. Greens were true but shape and size was challenging on some holes.
I will definitely be back.
Great condition for time of year and recent weather conditions🏌️☔️
Absolutely brilliant for saying how bad the weather had been this week!
The fairways were wet as expected, but the greens were absolutely brilliant and rolled superbly.
My only fault is, quite a few of the tee-boxes were on a slant. It’s not major however it does affect tee shots from time to time.
Overall, I highly recommend this course as an affordable getaway!
THE WELCOME
Fantastic course some very interesting holes conditions for the time of year where very good will be revisited in the future recommend to anyone interested
Place in my heart ❤️
Played here for the 1st time and it definitely won't be my last. Had some terrible weather recently so I didnt expect the best conditions but WOW it was near enough perfect. As someone who has only been playing golf for less than a year, I was chuffed to par the 1st 2 holes. Par 5 and a par 3. I chipped in for birdie on the 7th from 60ish yards. My 1st ever chip in. Will always remember the course for that. Great day out there just missed the rain and finished with 94. Off to a good start this year
