it's wet today ^_^ Photo submitted by u8620379 on 11/17/2016
Will play again
Being new to golf I really enjoyed playing on this course
A potentially nice course looking a little tired
Enjoyed the round but course showing signs of its poor drainage and playing very soft. Greens were okay although fairways were a little long. Bunkers (yeah, I know, I should stay out of them) were truly appalling.
A course definitely needing a bit of TLC.
Only saw one person in (quite nice) clubhouse who acted as Golf Shop Pro, barman and chef!
Food choice was extremely limited.
Most enjoyable course
Thoroughly enjoyed my round here, great course, greens were running true and will definitely be recommending to friends (already have!) and paying a visit here again in the summer for definite and on multiple occasions no doubt.
I forgot
The bunkers have yet to have sand in them. Only bad point.
Massively improved
Played here a lot before Xmas and things just got worse and worse. Played today and a total Pleasant surprise. A lot of work has been done to the course. Only 1 fairway was slightly damp. Great fairways otherwise. Greens are perfectly acceptable. Unplayable rough has been fully cut back. A lot of trees and bushes have been cut to allow the breeze to dry things out. Currently very under priced for the challenge the course holds. Get while the getting is good. It will once again go up as it’s improving all the time. Plus Adrian and he’s staff give a very warm welcome. Once the new owners get their plans accepted and implemented it’s gonna be a gem.
Surprisingly good
Was a bit concerned playing the course after reading so many bad reviews.
Course was certainly not wet its quite challenging its longer than average.
Only negatives bunkers need some sand in them and ground is covered in worm castles which had gone quite crusty. Tee boxes were good and greens ran well but were quite challenging.
Pace of play wasn't great on the day with some very poor golfers.
Course has some really great holes nice open fairways.
Greens where excellent , fairways seemed pretty good as we are just coming out of winter.
Plenty of varied holes , outstanding value for money.
Need of course drainage
Merrist Wood has a lot of potential and already has a good course layout. I understand it’s in the process of being taken over and will be under new management. I hope there will be investment into the course and bringing up to a level it deserves. Vast majority of the course was very wet under foot and we were having balls plug in the fairway and on one occasion lose a ball completely.
I would definitely come back to play Merrist Wood in the future but only when sufficient investment into the course has been done
A much better course in the summer....
Played here a few times, but not in winter conditions and it was very boggy. In a 4-ball we lost 3 balls between us on just 2 holes - they were plugged without trace although we had a good eye on their lines :-(
So won't be going back agin until spring and won't play in the winter unless they have significant drainage works done. Shame, because played in dry conditions its a good and challenging course.
Also, I know we just come out of lockdown into tier-2, but whilst we could buy a hot sausage roll, on a freezing cold day we couldn't buy a hot drink as the catering was completely shut. Not even a coffee machine. I think thats very poor for cusomers and must lose a lot of revenue for the club at a time they need it.
Mud bath
I wouldn't bother with this course at any time other than at the end of drought during a heatwave.
To be fair, all 4 par 3 holes are pretty nice I thought, bit of interest...and ironically play fairly. You can carry a nice short iron onto good greens.
All other holes involving the need for a fairway were basically unplayable after the recent amount of rain we've been having.
Scorecards should inc a course diagram to indicate the placing of the many hidden ditches that are rife throughout, as well as the hazard posts.
It's also an absolute slog walking from hole to hole...if you are silly enough to risk it then allow four hours to complete for a 2 ball...and that's with no holdups ahead of you.
Heaven help you if you get stuck behind a four-ball...Honestly doesn't bare thinking about.
Lesson well and truly learned.
Merrist wood.
Played this course many times. When it is in prime condition there's few better value for money. Intersting layout and very difficult at the turn. Will test golfers of all abilities off the white tees.
MWGC
Fairways a bit patchy and all the tees were in a poor state but still enjoyed the round.
