Rye Hill
A good course and very friendly staff, made us feel very welcome
Ideal for big hitters as it is a long course with generous fairways and lots of room off the tee.
protection is the greens are tricky, small, well protected, often slightly elevated and hard to read.
very enjoyable
Lovely course, and very welcoming staff
Cracking course, tucked away in the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside. We played during lockdown, hence the low rating for off-course amenities. I'm sure they are as good as the rest of the club in normal circumstances.
The course is fairly long, with a number of 420+ yard par 4's. It's a challenge for higher handicappers, but is also quite forgiving. Some fairly generous fairways. Also a sprinkling of tight ones! There are 3 or 4 absolutely stunning-looking holes, particularly on the back 9, and the place must be an absolute picture on a sunny day.
The staff were brilliant. Obviously, social distancing was in effect, but we were made to feel very welcome. This is not always the case when visiting clubs that are tucked away. They like their privacy! We met a few members as well, and they were also very warm.
We enjoyed Rye Hill so much, that we are going to try to make it a regular outing.
Not bad, but lots of similar holes
This is a long course with no water, and with twelve of the eighteen holes being par fours many feel quite similar to one another. The first thirteen holes are largely flat with the last five dropping down into a valley and much hillier and more interesting as a result.
The fairways are wide and in reasonable condition despite the recent very dry weather although wayward shots are punished by deep rough. The greens were in good condition when we played.
Impossible to make use of the clubhouse facilities with the current regulations, but the practice facilities are decent, including a three-hole mini course.
First post lockdown round
4 of us (in two separate groups) played the course and it was the first time we played this year. The course is very fair and balls were flying across fairways (many of us in the same position), but it rarely meant you were out of the whole.
Obviously there was no post golf drink, so could not check out the bar etc.
The lady on reception was lovely.
Rye Hill
A very well kept course, mainly flat and great to develop you game
Welcoming and friendly course
The course was well set out and offers a number of challenges whilst providing a number of open fairways which allow the regular and more infrequent golfers to open their shoulders and “take it on”. The staff and members were friendly and helpful with their advice and the layout of the course meant that play flowed well whilst at the same time not rushed or harried. I’d definitely pl at this course again.
Ok but not great
Played here based on other reviews on golf now, unfortunately I wasn't impressed with the first 13 or so holes, all largely forgettable, 14, 15 and 16 are nice holes and use the landscape well though.
I would say the course is generally quite boring, far too many long, straight, featureless par 4s. It's nice to have some variation in a round to keep you interested, there just wasn't enough of it at rye hill.
The greens and fairways were in quite good condition but the bunkers were a mess, due to the rakes all being removed this wasn't a surprise but some had 6 inch long weeds growing in the bottom of them and virtually no sand, the ones that did have sand in were littered with stones.
I can't comment on the clubhouse etc as it was all closed due to the coronavirus.
It was nice to be out on the course after the recent lockdown, the weather was perfect and the price was great on a 'hot deal' however, we won't be rushing back to rye hill anytime soon.
Great course layout
Great course layout the greens need some work though and bunkers are full of stones
