Stunning BUT....
Stunning and truly challenging course. The course lay-out and degree of difficulty are awesome. However, it needs a lot of TLC. The fairways are too long, the cut grass were left uncollected, all the paths are so untidy, really messy with dried cuttings that looks like been left there 2 years ago. The tee beds are in very poor state, not well sign posted. Some of the greens are diseased and patchy in places. It's a great shame because all the holes are quite interesting and some can be intimidating. I enjoyed playing the course but I won't be coming back. The Pro shop is very difficult to find too. Tucked away deep in the most unlikely place, way too far from the car park in a building which can be accessed by walking through broken narrow road. Very depressing and unwelcoming sight indeed.
Enjoyable, a few poor greens and annoying holes
Two or three greens were rough, with high numbers of small sand areas so getting a ball to run true wasn't really possible from more than 3 feet out, the rest were better but then still only good municipal course standard.
4 or 5 holes have blind or blind ish tee shots where you cannot see the ball actually land, so you hit a good one, you all agree it's right down the middle but you don't find it, between 2 of us we lost 4 balls this way in two rounds, but we did find one of them from the first day on the second day a couple of inches off the fairway in the second cut.
It's a tiring walk, but we did both days and got to chat and see the views, I'd suggest if you don't want your game to suffer towards the end because of fatigue you use a buggy. We enjoyed the walk.
Get a map or guide if you don't know the course or risk wandering around trying to find the next tee a couple of times.
Now the flip side, course is an interesting mix of style, undulating to start then really hilly, the ability to shape shots will really help you, it favors someone who fades or slices.
Nearly all the course is well drained which was a nice change , I prefer not walking through water.
We saw lots of ground keepers working, and you can see that they are working on the greens so I'd expect mid to late June greens could be back up to consistent standard.
I'm 20 handicap , my wife 36+ , but we both enjoyed the course over all, some holes my wife had no chance on but still enjoyed, A 20 handicapper should have a good chance to bogey all except the 7th, Sub 10 handicap should do well if they are not greedy as non of the greens were the nasty type that throw you off the back or side if you come in from a distance.
We enjoyed the course and would recommend playing it and we probably will go again next year.
What is not obvious on the course website is that if you are going to stay you get resident rates which were cheaper than any other non member web based booking system, so if you are staying phone the club house to pre book a tee time.
If you are staying just book a normal room ( four poster and deluxe from other guest comments are not worth extra ) and control yourself at breakfast as it is very nice and way to easy to over eat, hitting the spa after a round was very nice too.
We were on a breakfast and dinner package and found we didn't need or want lunch and i'm not one to miss meals.
You can order a nice good sized hot chocolate ( or other drink and sandwiches ) by mobile on the 8th to be waiting for you at the end of the 9th at an unexpectedly cheap price - bonus.
We also got delayed on the 18th one day waiting for a herd of deer to get off the fairway.
