Desert Dunes Golf Course

About
Desert Dunes Golf Course has a unique layout that combines a traditional links design with true desert-style golf. The course winds through natural sand dunes that are accented with mature trees and an abundance of native vegetation. It offers one of the most challenging rounds in the valley with narrow fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and fast, sloped greens. Collection areas and strategically placed bunkers border the greens. The most interesting of these bunkers can be found on the ninth and 18th holes where it sits in the center of the signature double green. There are also water hazards that come into play on several holes. In addition to the challenging round, the golf course offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains as well as the opportunity to play amongst wildlife including rabbits, roadrunners, bobcats, and even the occasional desert kit fox.

Terrible location and poor conditions
This course will always have high wind conditions because of its location . It is in horrible condition . We decided not to play the back nine due to heavy winds and not worth playing .
Sorry for the bad review but the website does not depict the course in reality .
DON'T PLAY THIS COURSE!
This course has potential. but it is not well maintained. Greens are not in extremely bad shape making it almost impossible to putt...wobbly is the word for them.
Staff were uninformed. I told the man at the desk that I wanted to warm-up and he told me balls were at the driving range. There were no ball\s at the driving range. After 9, my husband asked where the washrooms were. Both the mens and ladies washrooms were locked. We should have been directed inside of the clubhouse. This was annoying at best.
Horrible shape and overpriced
Course was in really bad shape. More weeds than grass I. Many areas. NO sand in traps, just hard dirt, water and mud.
We were also got totally ripped off by this app which charged us $120 for a tee time when it was $79 at the course it turns out. So much for a “Hot deal”.
Won’t be using this app again or golfing here at desert Dunes again unfortunately
Course has really gone downhill
Played this course a year ago and was shocked at how much this course has gone downhill. Would have rated it a 4 then and no better than a 2 now. DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE ON A WINDY DAY. When we left Palm Desert, it was blowing 5-7mph. The wind at Desert Dunes was a steady 25mph with gusts to 45mph.
Wind tunnel
Beautiful course in good condition but wind makes it unplayable for the average golfer. Tight fairways and if wind is sideways almost impossible to get near a fairway. 40 yards longer on every shot when wind in your face and this was on a fairly calm day. Too bad because course is great and challenging but built in the wrong place. I would play it again and hope for calmer winds.
Good course but wind exposed.
This course was a fair value but we happened to play on a windy day and it was brutal. This place is more wind exposed than other courses. It is not far from the wind turbine generators you see when entering Coachella valley from the west. The course was in good condition with the fairways and greens in good shape. But I would avoid on a windy day.
Typical RTJ golf course
Greens were a challenge. Lots of poa in the greens seeding out causing bumpy putting surfaces. Wind adds to the difficulty for sure. The combo green on 9 & 18 could easily be separated to make them more playable when pins are in tough spots. Right side of 18 green when the pin is on the right is not very fair to the golfer.
Dont
Just don’t play here. Drive another 30 mins to oak valley or tukwet. A little cheaper and much better courses. Layout here is okay but the staff is terrible.
Great desert setting.
Though we did have a variety of weather that day, we will disregard that for the review. We still love the layout and challenges of the course, and its beautiful setting in the desert and natural scrub bush at the course N of I 10. . Parts of the course are dry, and others were very et due to sporadic sprinklers running and causing ponding. The sand traps are all pretty bad, with water ponded in the bottom of a lot of them (bad watering).. With all the sand available locally, this should be easy to correct! Greens putted pretty good, except the ones with sprinklers running at noon!
Sixsomes? Really?
Well over 2.5 hrs for the first 9 holes & staff was unable/unwilling to break up the course-clogging offenders. Pea gravel “sand” traps & mowed weed fairways didn’t help the experience. Plenty of other options in the area, so stay away from this one.
Too many sprinklers on, made it hard to putt on the greens. They need to readjust there watering schedule to late afternoon or evening...
Course Maintenance Exceptional Poor
Have olayed many Robert Trent Jones Courses. His layouts are always challenging and enjoyable. This course “Desert Dunes” would make him very sad. The greens are covered in poana (weed). The tee boxes and fairways are overtaken with weeds. The bunkers haven’t been worked out n months and some were full with water as sprinkler flooded them. Poorly managed and a waste of time to visit.
Great Layout But Needs Work
Great design but in rough condition. Dirt bunkers not sand bunkers. Mixture of grasses on the fariways and rough.
Maybe try again later in the Spring when the Bermuda grass comes back.
Great course, great hot dog lady
The course was great, pace of play was great and the customer service from the Marshall and the cart girl were amazing. When we finished and pulled into the cart return the older gentleman manning that station was on the phone. He was rude and snarky as our group took a photo and cleaned up our cart. He made a comment about tipping him, but he didn’t do anything at all. Whoever he was, he made sure we left with a bad taste. Not sure if we’d return after that.
A typically RT Jones great course
Every time I went to Palm Springs area, I always go to Desert Dunes and play there regardless it was windy, cold or hot weather conditions.
I like the RT Jones design, especially this course was more or less a replica of Scottish Links setting. Playing in the wind requires some advanced skill and experiences of windy low ball knowledge.
My friend complained the wind but I told my friend this is the kind of weather people playing golf in Ireland. I took a picture at the stone bridge at the 9th fairway, when I shown the picture to my golf friends, they all thought I was at St. Andrew’s Old Course.
