Indian Palms Golf & Country Club - Royal/Indian
About
This course dates back to the 1940s and carries a powerful history. Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy played many a round at Indian Palms, back when it was called Cochran Ranch. Eisenhower loved the place so much, he wrote his memoirs at the ranch.
You might become enraptured with Indian Palms' past. But the course itself has very much moved into the 21st century.
Each of the nines carries its own personality. The Indian nine is the longest, with the most straight-forward holes. The Royal nine features water on eight of its holes. (Yes, your break from water is one hole total).

Not worth the money
Have been playing at this course for the past 10 years when in Indio. The course over the past 4 years has been going down hill in all aspects. This year we had problems with the carts. The batteries did not last the 18 holes.
One several occasions ourselves and the friends that were with us we had to call and get a new cart brought out to us. Very annoying! Owners response was the batteries are on order but won’t arrive until October.
There was no discount offered for the inconvenience we incurred.
OK for a hot Sunday Afternoon
overall a pleasant Sunday playing by myself. the course is tight with houses close to the fairway.
course maintenance could be better but the price was right.
You get what you pay for
The course itself is challenging, but bad shape in places. There’s a broken down tractor on the cart path that’s been there awhile. Consider yourself lucky if you get around in their carts before they run out of juice. For $35, I’ll be back. Just don’t have high expectations.
Horrible
You have to walk down the stairs to get it the pro shop which was filled with leaves and trash. I though I was going through a deserted alley way.
When I arrived at the pro shop I told the person working that I had a tee time. They directed me to the bar. The server at the bar checked me in. I then went to get a cart. I couldn’t find the cart guy.
When the cart guy arrived, he searched for a working cart. When he was finally able to give me a cart, it didn’t have a score card. The cart guy has disappeared again, so I looked around and helped myself to find a score card.
Got to the second hole. All the sprinklers were on and I couldn’t Tee off. Dry course, couldn’t find the yardage markers outside of 100 yards (if there were any). An overall neglected course. Disappointment for the dessert area having a reputation for golf.
Good for the price!
Indian Palms is a great course for the price. We enjoyed our round, especially because "Joe" the director of everything at Indian Palms helped us as a starter, clubhouse director, etc. Thank goodness for Joe who is the only consistent part of the.organization. He is an excellent golf pro and I have had lessons and he never has a negative thing to say as a clubhouse worker or as a golf course representative. We did not enjoy the golf cart worker....... He gave us a bad time about golfing 18 holes and getting back to the cart barn at 6:50pm. The cart barn employee was negative and not concerned with customer service.............That was the only disappointing part of the whole experience.
The course was played in three hrs because no one was there.
The girl at the desk was as friendly as a snake. The fairways and greens were terrible. The sand traps had grass growing in them and were had as a rock. The nice part was I had the course to myself. I was stopped by a guard who asked me if I had paid. Apparently a lot of local jerks think they can take their own carts and play for free.
Pluses and minuses
Played 9 holes as a part of our Stagecoach Festival weekend.
Pluses:
- Friendly staff.
- Grass range with short game area.
- Accommodating. We had 7 players and wanted a specific course. The starter fit us in and told us there wasn’t anyone behind us so we played as a seven-some.
Minuses:
- Course conditions are a little scruffy. Conditions are consistent with the price, just don’t expect pristine fairways and greens.
- 2 of our carts broke down during the round. This was an unwanted hassle, but we made it work.
Overall, Indian Palms is an OK place to play as long as you manage expectations about course conditions.
snowbird- late
Mountain / Royal
Worst golf experience in the Coachella Valley in many years. Staff was unpleasant at best. Equipment was very poor. Went thru 4 golf carts in 18 holes and pushed power cart for at least 3 holes trying to finish. Staff seemed to feel we were a burden.
Tee boxes had not been cut for several days - maybe longer. Greens badly marked up.
Clearly end of season and they really didn't want anyone who cared about the golf experience.
Will make sure I never return and will advise anyone I know to avoid the facility.
GOFNOW should not be involved with these people - they are an embarrassment.
You get what you pay for.
27 hole track. 2/3 nines in reasonable shape. 1/3 nines have been seemingly abandoned from care and attention and clearly used to entice Golfers looking for value. Play elsewhere.
Bang for the money
Greens are excellent and overall condition was great.
Just Terrible
Course is totally unkept. No distinction between fairway and rough. Lost balls hitting straight down the fairway as the grass had not been cut for a long time.
Golf cart made an annoying high pitched buzzing noise. Could not get it to stop. Asked for different cart after 3 holes. Cart never came. Noise got worse. Took cart in after 9 holes. Refused to give us a different cart.
Very bad experience. Was not enjoyable at all.
Will not be returning. Don't waste your money. Lots of other good courses to play!
