The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Tough but fair
It was my first time playing this course so I struggled a little bit with the positioning of my tee shots. They have a great range and practice area, the staff are friendly, and it was a pleasure to play this course. The next time I play here it will be during the winter when temps aren't in the 100s.

Nice Day for a Round
Greens in great shape. Fairways and tee boxes were a little rough. Don't like the low position of the GPS on the cart. It's blocked out by the steering column and our cups.

Great value
A few bare patches around the edges of the greens, Bunkers kinda suck , But overall the greens are true and its a great layout, 39 bucks is a awesome value.

Almost a 10
Reason for 5 stars was time of year. July hot as heck the new greens were firm but held well struck shots, They putted really true and fast. Staff was awesome and kinda treated us like heros going out in the late afternoon 110 degrees. only 39 bucks a true steal if u can handle the heat. As a CV resident i appreciate all the staff, Thank you.

Good course,
Course was great, staff was great on a hot day delivering water. Some dry patches and greens a little sandy, but overall great condition. Only downside was a 4-some that took an hour break at the turn and was let out on hole 10 as my partner and I were finishing hole 9. So we were stuck behind them for the whole back 9...pretty inconvenient timing.

Exhausting but perfect in every other way
There isn’t much more one can desire when playing the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course. Stunning views, friendly staff, consistent green speeds, and priced very well. With all that said, it is still the most challenging course I’ve ever faced in 3 years of golfing.

Challenging Golf
Course design with bad intensions, meaning the little things the average joe isn't aware of come into play. After each hole I'm thinking I got bite by this or that small subtle design. Whether it be a false front, a partial side slope at the entrance to the green, protected greens by addition bunkers, collection depression near the greens and the many waste spots with bushy vegetation along the channeled fairways. All these planned brilliant variants for golfers can have a negative impact on one's game. No wonder professional's show up to tournaments early and play practice rounds.
Course conditions overall good. Greens were fast which I was aware of and adjusted by clubbing down some, or running balls onto the green. Putting is true, once you locate the line speed to get it there is key. I wish I would have thought my way around the course better. I'll make up for it next time I visit, which can't be soon enough. Completely enjoyed the challenge.

New Greens
Per the player assistant, the greens are new at this course. As a result, it was difficult to hold greens even with lofted clubs. If you've played this course, you understand that holding the greens here is a must for one to shoot a low score. You just have to be smarter about your approach shots. Overall a great course, sneaky tough. You need your A+ game, especially on approach shots.

Played my best golf yet
Whether it is a PGA West, Stadium Course or Jack Nicklaus course, you can never go wrong with a PGA West. The greens are very fast this time of year in the desert heat. As a beginner golfer, I found this course to be somewhat challenging. This has been by far the best golf I have ever played.
