PGA WEST Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course
About
The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

This is a challenging Jack Nicklaus design! Make sure and manage your way around the course to shoot a good number. The greens are elevated and having long irons into these greens is not ideal. If you are offline they will fall off into bunkers. Be on your A game! The 9th and 18th green are a shared green which is unique. Much like all of the PGA West properties, this course was in great shape. Make sure to grab some food in the clubhouse as it was very good!
Nice course, slowest round of my life
Two buddies and I drove 2 hours just to play this course and when we got there they somehow “double booked” our tee time with another 4 some and allowed them to play ahead of us. Just so happened that they were the slowest golfers ever. We teed off at 10am and finished close to 4. Absolutely brutal pace of play. The course is in good condition and is very difficult. Beautiful views. Challenging holes. I won’t play here again because of the ridiculous pace of play, but if you don’t mind very slow golf I would give this a chance. If you don’t, I would recommend one of the hundred other courses within 10 miles.
Nice Sunday in the desert
First time play the Tournament course. Really enjoyed my round, was a little backed up on my front nine. But opened up nicely on the back. Was a bit hotter than was expected but the course and my game was nice.
Course Okay, Staff Ugh!
I know you work at the famous PGA West Nicklaus course, but staff you need to treat the Golfnow patrons as well as the full fare clientel. Supposedly, you don’t make any money off Golfnow people, but you should treat everyone the same. You see we have lots of friends and can give you a thumbs up or down. The attitude is an aloof one and kills the experience. Pro shop act like your happy to see us and be friendly. Same for the starter. Harsh but I would suggest one of the other PGA courses or the Classic Club. Jack I hope you read this! GA You probably won’t print this.
PGA West Couses are Great
Booked through Golf Now. I start with that because someone else said they got treated poorly because they used Golf Niw to book. We got treated excellent from the bag drop to the starter.
Course is good, Stadium is better, guess that’s why the final round of a Career Builder is played there lol. Nice layout, elevated fairways, greens are wide but not deep, tee boxes very level. fairways are nice and green, you will get some roll. Greens were slow, which was surprising, Sierra Lakes in Fontana has faster greens. Pro shop is cool with some nice memorabilia. Mid range handicappers bring your A game, you’re going to need it! I’m a15 handicap, and I shut 98, so clearly I didn’t bring my. A game!
We would play again. 1st class facility. Great staff.
Fun course
Well manicured course that provides a good opportunity for the average player to score well.
The staff is extremely professional and it was a very relaxed atmosphere.
More Tricked Up than Expected
If you have to choose between the Stadium Course and the Nicklaus Course, play the Stadium. The Nicklaus is not in great shape considering the other courses in the area. The staff at the course almost seemed offended that we purchased our tee time via GolfNow.
Course is tired and unintersting
There are very few memorable holes and the course is tired. Most important however is that they have the worst sand I have ever played, world wide. Its not even sand, it is clay with a surface crust and either air or mud under it. I know they will defend their sand but when a low handicapper leaves many sand shots in the bunker or skulls them repetitively to avoid the crust then there is a problem.
Great course
Great course , great shape and layout, not worth the asking price but well worth it at a discounted rate Of $80
Beautiful course in great shape. Greens were hard to hold and mostly elevated. If you got off either side of the fairway you found yourself in a deep valley. Stay on the fairway, hit for the front of the green and you can score on this course
Nicholas course
The course is great. Not my play. Pick your tee correctly, and this course is not too difficult. That is a characteristic of a Nicklaus course. I recommend this course when you can find a good price.
Golf fun
Everything about this fine golf course was awesome
Only con is they have no junior rate
Decent course SLOW PACE
This course was definately a challenge good for intermediate and advanced players. Pratice area could use a little work as most of the hitting areas had little to no grass which is a little disappointing due to the nature of this course. The biggest issue is there is no marshals to be found to get groups moving like the 4some infront of my group that were holding every other group up cause of there stupid side bets they had going on every hole. The pace of play ruined what should have been a good day. If you don't get an early tee time for a good rate skip this course and play one of the other gems in the desert.
Windy day closes course
The staff got everyone off the course and issued 90day rain checks to me and our group...very mechanically done
Nice course poor pace of play
Played with 3 others on March 15th. Start times were already behind by 10min which is no big deal. Course it self is fun and challenging with lots of risk and reward shots. Now here comes the bad. Pratice area is busy and chewed up so good luck finding a green patch of grass to hit your irons from. This course needs Marshall's out there incouraging groups to pick up the pace a 5 hour round is just not acceptable by anybody's standards, especially when the group infront of you is slow playing cause they have money on every freaking hole. There were points where there was a 3 hole gap between the group infront of us and the group infront of them. Marshall's were not to be found to get these Yahoo's moving. Truly ruined my experience with PGA West.
