PGA WEST Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course
About
The Golden Bear tests you with tabletop fairways at PGA WEST - Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta.
If your shot's too wild, it's rolling up, often down into the desert. That's just one bit of the showmanship at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament course. This was designed to hold a PGA event, but it's spent its days delivering damage and fun to regular hackers.
Nicklaus particularly tests your short game with his bunkering around the greens. Confidence in your wedge shots is crucial here. Still, it's not as tough and unforgiving as Pete Dye's Stadium Course or even Greg Norman's course.
It's possible to get lost in the scenery at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course and there's plenty of scenery to go around with the desert brush and the mountains looming in the distance.
No. 15 is probably the most well known - and notorious - hole. Nicknamed "Long Island," it's pretty much that: a daunting 572 yard par five with an island green. The fairway's split, giving you a chance to pick your path. Either way you go, getting onto the green in two is oh but a dream.
"Nicklaus also abundantly uses non-traditional design features throughout the course to give the track its own unique flavor," TravelGolf.com's Jeffrey Rendall said. "In many ways, I don't think I've seen another course quite like it."

Nice golf course
Nice golf course but I very very prefer Greg Norman golf course
Really interesting layout
This course was really fun to play, the Nicklaus design is very cool. Often double tiered fairways/rough with lots of tough shots up to elevated greens with bunkers surrounding. Course was in great shape and greens were very speedy and true. Off course amenities including pro shop and practice area were first class and service was great.
Great experience except for the greenside bunkers
What a great experience. The Nicklaus course will be remembered for the good and the bad. The good was for everything else but the greenside bunkers. They were not groomed deep enough to splash out the ball . Instead your club would bounce into the ball and the ball would go flying. I enjoyed the rest of the course and the people tremendously. I would do it again for the same price.

Played the Blues (6522/72.2/134) with Bill, Dave & David in 4H, 40M, barely beating darkness. The weather was sunny, fairly calm and in the high 80's.
Unique features of this layout include large mounds along the side of many fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways, some expansive sand waste bunkers and a huge double green that is shared by holes 9/18.
The tees were immaculate. Many of the par 4/5's had no divots at all. Only a few par 3's had divot damages that were well maintained.
The fairways were very lush and nice to play from.
The primary rough was lush and while not real long, it is thick. The secondary rough is currently dormant Bermuda. One of the toughest chipping courses I have ever played because the rough around the firm/quick raised greens is thick. That combination plus often having a downhill or side hill lie with the green 10-15' above you makes chipping a nightmare here.
Many of the large sand traps have decent sized lips and need to be avoided in most cases because of the raised greens. Mostly in good condition, decently maintained. Green side bunker shots are about as difficult here as any course I have ever played. Very easy to have a green side bunker shot where you cannot even see the top of the pin because many of the bunkers are so far below the raised greens surface.
The greens putted medium fast & were firm and smooth.
The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Excellent customer service from everyone involved with the golf. The course looks nice with the majority over seeded emerald green framed by the not over seeded dormant Bermuda secondary rough. Great course in very good to excellent condition. Definitely recommended.
Awesome
What else can you say about this course, got a great tee time with golf now. Don’t miss this one if you are in the area.
Great day
Got an EXCELLENT price through GolfNow. Our round took 4.5 hours but that’s expected this time of year. Play this course!
Information
Should of been upfront that it was cart path only. I never would of booked it had I known. I blame golf now as much as the pro shop for not letting us know. That’s a dirty trick not to inform the players ahead of time. By the time we find out it’s to late to do anything about it. Very unappreciated
Great staff was proactive in solving problem
We had a 12:45 tee time on the Nicklaus Tournamnet course. We finished the front in 2 hours and as we were heading to 10, one of the staff stopped us and said things were a little slow on the back and they were concerned we wouldn't finish before dark. So we were offered options - continue to 10 and hope for the best, play the front again (which was almost empty at this time) or play the front 9 on the Stadium Course. We jumped at the chance to play the Stadium course and had the front 9 entirely to ourselves. We got in well before dark and had a wonderful experience. The staff there went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. I highly recommend either course.
Great Course
Great course layout a lot of target golf the bunkers are very deep but the manicure on the course is super enjoyed my round with three Golfers I just met great round
Great layout, average everything else
The layout is classic Jack. Wide open fairways but you have to make the approach shot stick. There are no safe bail outs here. The design of the track is wonderful. Otherwise the course was not as amazing as we had hoped. Get a good deal to come here or it won’t be worth it.
Devilish
The golf course is in excellent shape with the exception of the greens. They roll good but no members or guests seem to ever repair a ball mark. There are ten to twenty unrepaired marks every hole. The sand traps are hard pan. Makes the deep bunkers tough to hit soft high shots out of them. The course fairways are excellent. The course is not for the beginner. Pace of play was Under 4 hours. Layout tough with many blind approaches.
The Valet staff was gone when we finished golfing at 3:30pm. The rest of the staff was friendly and helpful.
Well designed beautiful course
My favorite course together with Stadium in the area.
Nicklaus Tournament
Played the Blues (6522/72.2/134) with Tony & Steve in 4H. The weather was sunny, breezy and in the 60's.
One of the toughest chipping courses I have ever played because of the firm raised greens. The layout features mounds along the side of fairways, large/deep bunkers, several split fairways and some expansive sand waste bunkers. The course looks nice with the majority over seeded emerald green framed by the not over seeded dormant Bermuda econdary rough. Not in as good condition overall as Stadium, but still quite good.
The tees were lush but had alot of late in the weekend divots.
The fairways were lush and nice to play from.
The primary rough was lush and deep enough to make longer clubs unlikely. The secondary rough is currently dormant Bermuda.
The large sand traps are plentiful here. Many have decent size lips and need to be avoided in most cases because of the raised greens. Mostly in good condition, decently maintained.
The greens putted medium fast & were firm and smooth.
The cart gal was out making the rounds numerous times. Excellent customer service from everyone involved with the golf. Great course in very good to excellent condition. Definitely recommended.
Better than ever!
Kudos all around. The courae is in great shape with well manicured fairways providing excellent hitting surfaces. Great to see The Nick back to it's old splendor!
