My son at the 18th hole! Photo submitted by Hassellcari on 08/24/2013
Shameful
10-15 years ago this was a top course in the area. Now it’s just a field that is occasionally cut by the same riding mowers you purchase at Home Depot. Terrible conditions throughout. Pace of play was horrendous. Won’t be surprised when this course shuts their door for good considering how terrible it is. Lady the checked us in was very rude and made us feel like we were a nuisance. Will never play here again.
Not a Good experience
Clubhouse attendant unfriendly. Purchased range ball on the Golf Now, but course would not honor the purchase for either myself or my friend requiring me to buy a third basket of ball. Greens were not in good condition. Several fairways not cut and covered in weeds including an awful amount of crab grass. The signage from hole to hole was not good causing us to get lost several times. With many other options in the area I do not plan to return.
Golf Now users beware!
First, the good: This is a challenging and competitively designed course. There is a fair amount of water in play and the small greens may grow in soon. If cut properly and better maintained, this course could be excellent.
Second, the bad: The course does NOT honor range purchases made on the Golf Now app. On our drive to the course, my playing partner and I purchased two $5 buckets of balls. The charge on our accounts was made.
Once we arrived, I asked the man at the check-in desk about the range balls, and he quickly and rudely said, I don’t know anything about that, and I can’t help you. He suggested calling the office on Monday. This was over just $5. He was snarky about it.
I’m sure that a lot of people either don’t have time to waste time calling the front desk on Monday. Where does that $5 go?
It wasn’t until my playing partner offered to buy another bucket that he warmed up slightly and gave him a bigger bucket for the $5 one. If only he had suggested this to begin with and apologized for the problem (even if it isn’t his fault), but instead, he set a bad tone for the morning. Who wants to drive 45 or more minutes and deal with that nonsense?
Third, the course: It’s not well maintained. You can tell that there is a good course hiding underneath debris, small greens that were either covered in black grassless spots or furry, fringe around the green weeds and crabgrass (this was really awful), fairways covered in weeds (tall weeds not just patches of crabgrass). It was almost pasture like.
The cart paths are almost impassable in places. One section had limbs hanging over it requiring you to drive around onto the tee box (there were tracks). This happens, but it was clear that these limbs didn’t just fall.
On one hole, the sprinklers around the greed bubbled continuously making the green and the area around it a muddy puddle.
The course didn’t even bother with tee box markers on one of the par three holes on the back nine. I noticed a bit of rotten and broken up wood that appeared to be painted blue in randomly spread into the center of one of the boxes. So, we tee’d off from there. While sometimes markers get pushed around, this course didn’t even have a proper marker on that hole. It was inconsistent throughout.
There were sand bunkers with very little sand in them (not uncommon, I know) and one was turning into a grass bunker because of the weeds. This is a maintenance issue.
To be fair here, Atlanta golfers are spoiled. We have an embarrassment of golf riches.
For example, while Brown’s Mill is a municipal course and not the most challenging layout, it is well maintained. The good sized greens are excellent compared to Lake Spivey. And it’s half the cost or cheaper if you purchase the monthly or even yearly Fore plan.
There are more affordable and better semi-private courses in the metro Atlanta area. If you drive to Griffin, Shoal Creek is infinitely better and cheaper. The Coweta Club is better and cheaper, even though it is a very tough layout.
I’d like to see Lake Spivey improve, because it’s clearly a good design. And honoring the Golf Now purchases would be nice.
My intention in writing this review isn’t to be mean-spirited and just dump on this course, but my fellow golfers should be informed on the issues. I suspect that they will improve, and I’d play it again if other golfers post that the maintenance has been done.
Mr D
Course needs work on the greens too slow, also grass needs cutting in many areas okay to play but too expensive for condition of course. Xxxxxxx.
So bad
I really want this course to be playable because I grew up playing this track. But it’s very bad the tee boxes fairways are terrible. Now it does look like they are trying to bring back the putting greens. I would only play a practice round over there
3.5 hour round
Tired of the 4.5 hour round? I recommend giving Lake Spivey a try. It’s a really good course - both layout and condition. Recent rains have softened the tee boxes. Parts of the cart path are bumpy, but overall good course, not crowded and great value. I’ll be back!
Very rough around the edges
First time playing at Lake Spivey and will be unlikely to return. The facilities are run down and get the impression immediately upon pulling in that this place is on its last legs. The fairways are weedy in spots, but overall ok. The tee boxes are non existent, white spray paint marks the spot. The greens are horrendous. Overall the layout is ok and could be a sporty fun track if invested in. Wouldn’t be surprised to hear this course is a neighborhood soon.
Great course!
It’s a great course to play and hone your skills. Community can be aggravating at times when you see kids out on the greens fishing while parents sit in lawn chairs…but that was a one off. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Same Old
I’ve played Lake Spivey quite a bit over the years, although it’s been a while since my last round. Overall, you generally know what you’re going to get—fair conditions and a decent, straightforward layout that makes for an enjoyable day of golf.
That said, at the current price point, I was hoping to see some noticeable improvements, but unfortunately, nothing really stood out. Course maintenance continues to be hit or miss. Several fairways appeared to be in need of mowing, and the cart paths are still in disrepair in many of the same spots as they were a year ago.
The layout itself is still solid and playable, which is why I keep coming back, but the overall conditions don’t quite justify the current greens fees. I understand that costs are going up everywhere, but you’d expect to see at least some reinvestment into the course to match those higher rates.
All in all, I hate to say it, but based purely on conditions, it’s not the best value right now. Still, I genuinely enjoy the course and hope to see improvements in the future that bring it back in line with what you’d expect for the price.

It’s just bad.
The course is just bad. There really isn’t much positive to say about it. I guess the fairways weren’t terrible. But other than that, greens are horrible. Tee boxes are horrible. Range is horrible. Nothing in the clubhouse. It’s been this bad for a while now. I only played because i went with a group that wanted to play there but it quite literally might be the worse course within an hour of it in any direction. Just drive like 15-20 minutes down to Henry county and play Crystal Lake. They’ve completely lost their minds charging anything over 20 dollars.
emc
I have tried to give management of this course a fair chance to improve the conditions. However, when the first cut off of the greens is 3-4 inches it slows down the pace of play and makes playing the course difficult for the average golfer. As a result of this I only periodically play this course because I still have friends who play there.
Course condition
The tee box’s was impossible to place a tee in the ground. The fairways and greens needed water.
Lake Spivey Review
Course was in good shape considering we are in a drought. greens were water and good. The fairways were very dry.
