My son at the 18th hole! Photo submitted by Hassellcari on 08/24/2013
Course has good bones but run EXTREMELY poorly
Course layout is great and challenging. Pace of play is horrendous and not enforced by course marshalls. After 50 mins, was only able to get through 2 holes. The rough right next to the fairway is lined with 8 inch+ blades of grass and weeds. Good luck finding your ball even if you hit a perfect tee shot. Greens were also filled with weeds, unfixed pitch marks, divots, and sand. Greens keeper literally rolled up to a par 3 (driving on the green), in the middle of us teeing off to turn on the sprinklers for the green. When asking the guy to turn off the sprinkler because we are literally in the middle of the hole, he just looked confused and unresponsive. Finally turned off the sprinkler and drove right back over the green to go turn on sprinklers on other holes while people are playing. For a course with so much promise, this place needs serious work and a re-evaluation of staff
Note: I’m not one to leave bad reviews normally, but this course was my worst experience in 2+ years of golfing.
Avoid of possible
I grew up playing this course and it has fallen so very far. Some of the worst conditions I’ve ever seen and it just seems like there is no intention to improve the course. Range was in awful shape as well and range balls felt like I was hitting rocks they pulled out of the pond. At the very least let the county buy it and try to do something with it…. Will not be playing again in the future.
Avoid at all costs
I don’t usually write reviews but this needs to be talked about. I am by no means a snob when it comes to conditions of the course but this place is borderline unplayable. Booked the tee time morning of because of last minute plans. Only booked it here because it was a Saturday and everywhere else was booked yet this place was wide open, which should have been the first red flag. Right after booking I realized not everyone was gonna make it in that time so I called right back and asked if we could move it back 30 mins. The very nice lady who answered the phone said it’s no worries it doesn’t matter when you show up, which was another red flag. We paid the highway robbery of $55 and got on with our round.
HOLE 1:After teeing off 2/3 people in the group lost their ball in the middle of the fairway because it hadn’t been cut in weeks and was riddled with weeds (This is the case for next couple holes)
CART: As we approached the 1st “green” our cart ran out of battery. I called the Pro Shop and the lady said she would get someone out there. 25 minutes go by so I call again and she admits that she had forgotten and told me she was THE ONLY PERSON WORKING (IT WAS 1PM ON A SATURDAY). 15 minutes later a cart boy does show up and give us a new cart.
GREENS: The greens are absolutely unplayable. half of every green is uneven sand and is filled with weeds.
I can’t speak for the back 9 because we determined the course was simply not possible to actually play golf on. The course does have a nice interesting layout but if they want to remain in business they seriously need to sit down and figure some stuff out.
Conditions were terrible
I’ll start off by saying I play here a decent amount and have realistic expectations for the conditions. However, I played today (8/16/25) and the course was in the worst shape I have ever seen. The greens were a mess…not mowed, same/dirt/dead spots, patches of weeds, etc…they were incredibly slow on top of it. Additionally, it looked like the fairways/rough had not been maintained. It was beyond deep rough…it was full of overgrowth and weeds making it difficult to find shots, and even more difficult to hit shots. It was disappointing to see it in this shape after many times playing there and feeling it was great value for the cost.
Please maintain
I don’t live in Jonesboro but work in the area so some buddies and I will visit Lake Spivey occasionally after work for a round. Generally, we know what to expect coming here. Nothing great, but not bad. The last time we played at Spivey before Monday, we said we’d probably not be back due to how ran down the course had become. We decided we wanted to play Monday, and knew Spivey would be the closest after work and would be the only tee time we could make without driving to PTC or McDonough. The pro-shop attendant was not friendly. Golf carts were not ready and had to wait about 5-10 minutes for carts; when we got the carts, they were filthy. We stopped after 9 to use the restroom at the clubhouse and buy more balls but the pro shop guy had already shut down the computer and locked the bathrooms. The course was very unkept. The fairways felt like roughs it was so unmaintained. We were losing balls on the fairway because the grass was so tall (see pic). Forget about finding a ball in the roughs. The greens seemed faster than normal for Spivey, but were in terrible condition (see pic)… almost unplayable greens. Overall, very disappointed in Lake Spivey for how unfriendly the pro-shop was and how the course was maintained. Wouldn’t be as bad if the price to play was cheaper, but for $40-50 a tee time, it should be much better. Griffin Golf Course is $20 for 18+cart and is 10x nicer. Will probably give the course some time to fix up before trying to play here again.
Greens bad shape
Charging 60$ a round and greens in bad shape. Should discount players for bad greens.

Worst greens I’ve ever seen.
There is no grass on the greens. The worst I’ve ever seen Wish I knew about the course conditions before I booked my tee time.
Don’t go!
This course has drastically took a turn for the worse.
Lake spivey
Fairway rough is overgrown. If your not in the fairway, you won't find your ball. The greens are slow and cancerous with no fringe
Never Again
I played this course about a year ago and it was terrible. It had been awhile and I had forgotten just how bad things were. By time we got to the first tee (horribly marked and hard to find as they swapped the front and back 9s) I immediately remembered the experience. Nothing is kept up. Not the tee boxes, not the fairways, not the traps and definitely not the greens. There were huge black patches of dirt and dozens of weeds on EVERY SINGLE GREEN. More rocks (not pebbles) than sand in the traps. Horrible experience. The complete lack of trying is what’s most disappointing.
Awful in every possible way
Course is awful but management is just as bad. Avoid at all costs
Yikes!
The greens are in really bad shape and the fairways/tee boxes haven’t been mowed in a while it seems.
Really Bad
Played 18 holes today at Lake Spivey. It's bad. The greens were burnt, bare, mis cut. There were places on the second cut around the green that resembled deep rough like you would expect on the fairway. Bunkers were not maintained. I don't normally write reviews, but I'm hoping that the owners of Lake Spivey read this. This golf course was my go-to course about 3 years ago. It's shocking how bad it has degraded. I've seen this before with Cottonfields golf course before it closed last year. The facilities and staff were not the problem today. To the owners: Do better or sell to someone who can manage it better. Raise your prices if you have to but charging the public $50+ dollars for this is unethical.
Course overall was great for its value but the green condition could be improved as it had bumps and rough patches. In addition, the tee boxes were incredibly difficult to tee off of as the ground was solid. Staff was extremely friendly and easily approachable.
