San Juan Hills Golf Club
About
Tucked away in the hills of San Juan Capistrano, San Juan Golf Course is situated midway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Its location is conveniently close to Legoland, Disneyland, the San Diego Zoo, and miles of sandy beaches. The championship golf course underwent a major renovation of its fairways and greens, making them some of the best in south Orange County. The layout consists of a diverse array of holes that range in length from short to long and some are hilly while others are flatter. Being a public golf course and having a versatile layout, San Juan G.C. is a popular place for tournaments and events. At either end of the course there are practice facilities as well. On the west side you'll find a putting green and sand bunker as well as a chipping area, and on the other end you'll find a grass driving range.

Slow play
We were paired with 2 men who not only talked for the entire 4 and a half hour round, but they would wait until they finished a conversation to select a club, tee up, and tee off. This made the round tedious, as I play the forward tees, so I had to wait forever to tee off. It wasn't until #13 that the ranger showed up and told these guys to pick up the pace.
Sloooooooooow
Way to slow, 6 hour round. Waited at every tee box for several minutes. Was supposed to tee off at 2 and we didn't even get off until 2:20 PM took 3 hours to play the front 9 so we decided to call it a day. The course is a great layout and lots of fun but the pace of play is not acceptable.
Slow Play
Very slow play . There was a group playing holding up about six groups and would not allow anyone to play through. The marshal watched and did nothing so it was a very frustrating day of stop and wait forever golf.
Good condition but....
Golf course was maintained very well. Nice weather and great round. But ranger who watched the game pace was so mean. Back to back backed up in front of us but he yelled us to speed up. That was such a bad customer service.!!!
San Juan Hills is a great value
Played on a Friday morning and it was a beautiful day to play golf. We decided that there must have been a special going on since the course was crowded and slow. We were just under five hours and had to wait on almost every shot.
San Juan is a challenging course, the greens were very good, considering the current water issues the rest of grounds are pretty good.
My group decided no more Friday play, pace of play was too slow, but we will play mid week.
Fun Course
Course is a good layout that offers some fair challenges. Course is in fairly good condition. A few brown spots but very good for this time of year. Pace of play was a little slow and I think $74 through Golf Now is a little pricey.Even with that it was a fun course to play
Best play in OC
This course has always played well and the rolling views of the OC valley stretch has always made this course one to come back and play again and again. Not saying this is an easy course it will challenge you time to time but it's a course that you will always want to come back and challenge again and again.
You can avoid this course
Played Saturday afternoon. Course was packed, teed off 10 minutes late or so. Only played the front nine which was pretty easy. My ball wasn't flying anywhere but was able to get up and down with the soft greens. Disappointed in the greens otherwise, they were extremely beat up. Play this course in the morning on a weekday if you must play this course. One of the guys my partner and I were paired up with had absolutely little to zero golf etiquette and that kinda ruins a day. A fine, peaceful course otherwise but the pace of play and people ruined it for me.
Too Crowded
I've been playing at this course for almost 20 years and have seen it go through a lot of changes. I love the course, I love the staff, I love the clubhouse, the atmosphere, and the food is fantastic. My only complaint is that lately, every time I play here it turns into a 5 hour round. They seem to be offering very low rates (which seems appealing) but at the mercy of the course being incredibly overbooked. Hit a shot, wait 10 minutes, hit another shot, wait 7 minutes... pull up to a par three, and you're behind 3 groups. On top of that, only one marshall siting all day, and he was parked in the shade on the same hole, half asleep. If the course is hurting for money and they're trying to mix up their strategy to make their quota, I'm raising my hand and proclaiming that I'd gladly pay $20 more a round to have it go back to the way the course used to be: A bit pricier, but an absolute joy to play.
Great course overall very clean
The greens and fairways were well kept, staff is very friendly and there were plenty of bathrooms along every 3 holes
Good golf. Hot beers
Great time playing with Kenny and Ian. Course was fun and in good shape. Beverage stop at 10th hole was ridiculous. The guy was stoned or something, no clue or customer service. Beers were hot and did not offer any help to keep them cool. Dude where's my car, is more his speed.
We had a great time.
This was a great course and an excellent value. The pace of play was extremely slow, even though the Marshall was trying to have players pick it up. It took us over 5 hour to complete 18 holes. Because of the price you get a lot of beginner golfers on the course. It was a great layout and a fun course to play not simple by any means. We had a great time.
Near perfect So Cal day at a well conditioned course
Bright sunny day with plenty of sea breeze will make just about any golf course feel terrific but SJHCC was well designed and groomed well enough to earn at least 4 star rating. Pace of play was a bit on a slow side but that gave me a time to look around the scenery and enjoy the weather. Highly recommend this course!
Great Pace of play and superb value
We teed off at noon and were finished at4.15pm on a Sunday. Great pace and it cost $30. Great value too. Joined up with another single and a pair, thanks to Mike, Ryan and Kathryn for a fun afternoon. Didn't score very well but that was more down to me!. Hitting uphill onto a lot of the greens always take one extra club at least and HIT it!
Value
We were late for our reservation and they got us right out at the special price of $25 each including cart
Fun course to play.
I have played this course twice in the last couple of weeks and it has been a fun time on both occasions. The fairways are a bit beaten up in places but the greens are in great shape. Interesting holes and friendly staff.
Cost & pace of play
Booked on line as we were celebrating a birthday. The course allowed too many players for pace of play. Two men joined us, very nice, but one paid $22 & the other $18. WE PAID $69 for the two of us!!! Not a deal at all. Course had too many "under repair" areas, some marked some not. Not happy at all.
Slowness of play
All was good but pace of play. They are packing in way too many patrons for the sake of money. Apparently there were over 300 players on the course.
