Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

A little deferred maintenance, the sign got hot and buckled so you can't use the ball washer Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

great course conditions
very few dry spots. interesting course layout. excellent course conditions. good value.
great course condittions
One of the few courses in central California that I have played recently that is in great condition. No dry areas on the course which is a plus during the drought. Greens are a little slow in the morning but speed up when they dry out by the afternoon. definitely worth the money.
Challenging
Castle oaks is a very challenging track. The greens, tee boxes, and fairwars were excellent as always. The challenging part aside from some very well placed trees to block your approache shot, is the rough around the greens. It's thick ,and with the different grasses make it at test I thoroughly enjoy.
Good pace of play
It had been quite a few months since I'd played Castle Oaks and and when I arrived it looked in good shape and not drying out like some other courses in N Calif . The staff was friendly and readily accepted my Golf Now tee time , and after hitting a few range ball we teed off . On the first we had to wait for the group in front of us , then on the second tee box the same thing and I thought uh oh it's going to be a long day but after that we didn't see that group until 18. The pace of everyone in front of us was excellent , we finished our round in just over 4 hrs. Also on a hot day the "cold" water jugs came in handy . Good job there ! I'll definitely be going back there
Great course
Loved it. We will play it again if we can get the price under $50. Drove an hour to get there.
Excellent Course Conditions
We took my Dad our for his Birthday and he had never played the course before. He kept commenting on how high the rough was...but how nice the course was. After a little razzing by his son, he proceeded to shoot 3 strokes better through 9, and won our initial bet. Overall, we were all impressed with how good of shape the fairway, greens and tee boxes were. Definitely look forward to playing again at Castle Oaks soon.

Great Trip
Haven't play the course in 20 years and had forgotten quite a bit. The course is in great shape except the sand traps. Teed off at 7:30 and was done by 11 on a Saturday morning. This course is well worth the money, just wish it wasn't an hour away. I will be going back!!
Castle Oakes
This is one of the very best courses in the area. There is not a a poorly desinged hole on the course.
enjoyed the course
Challenging layout. Needs to be played a few times to know the layout.
nice surprise
The layout of this course tucked in the sierra foothills was terrific. I especially liked that each hole seemed to be thought out. Some blind shots, some elevated play and a few holes with water that made you really think about what type of shot you were going to attempt. This course was recommended and I really enjoyed it. Getting out early was the key. I could see where this is a course that could get backed up easily as the morning rolls along. Can't wait to play it again.
Great course
Castle Oaks, I like to make my decision for #18 before I play and then stick to it....the course was in excellent condition, staff very professional and friendly, pace was almost like a country club...
Castle Oaks - Pretty Good Stuff
I played Castle a few times about 15 years ago. I moved back to the Sacramento area and wanted to play it again. Nice course. Pretty good value. The drive from Folsom to Ione is beautiful too. Greens are in very nice shape. The dry weather had only a light affect on the course conditions. I would recommend playing here.
good time
Had fun.fairly challenging.glad the traps finely got sand in them. $35 on a holiday. Can't beat it.
Excellent course to play
Course was in good shape and pace of play was very good. This is a very good course to play, but not for beginners.
Just ok. A long drive unless you live by Sacramento
The sound of cars comes into play from Hiway 99 almost all day. I learned to block it out or make it white noise. Totally flat course and greens. The only penalty and challenge was the trees, especially ones hanging over the fairway. Some narrow fairways. I drove 1 hour 15 min to get there . Not again. It's well maintained, just the noise, flatness, boring greens, and location gives this a 3 Star only. If you live close, the price is right and you can get your golf in.
Excrutiatingly slow!!!
When I signed in they said they were running a little late and they had 5 tournaments that day and were out of carts, but would call me in when they arrived.
Well a little behind turned into 25 minutes late on the tee time and the first 9 holes took 3 hours and 5 minutes. I left after 9.......
The itself is in great shape. very lush... rough pretty rough..... Greens were a bit on the slow side, but it was afternoon...
My favorite
Second time I've played the course. This is one of my favorite courses.
Split personality course
The fairways & greens were in very good condition. The rough and sand traps were wet, rough with loose clippings and sand the consistency of a beach at the tide line. They are places to stay out of, but should be playable. Played as a warmup to an NCGA qualifier.

Excellent course in great condition. Greens in excellent shape. Tough holes to start, and two awesome holes at the finish! Very nice staff, and very reasonably priced. You certainly get your bang for your buck! Would recommend to any and every body! The bEST public course in the area!
Good course
Great shape. The greens were outstanding!
The person who checked us in was not friendly at all. Although after the round the person working around 1130 was great! I'm sure the first person was the pro. Too bad he had not personality or cares about daily fee players.
There was a tournament starting after we were to tee off, which was knot revealed to us when I booked our tee time. I recommend shotgun tourneys be discussed when making reservations
