Castle Oaks Golf Club
About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

ready for summer?
Ah...it's that time of year. The greens have been aerified and are very bumpy and slow but in a month should be great if maintanence pays attention. The last rains should end this week. If the weeds are attacked a.s.a.p. the course will be in exceptional condition all summer. Currently the fairways are as good as any course in the Sacramento area.
The one true negative is the bunkering. Most are littered with rocks, yes rocks; are in extensive need of sand... and the use of a riding mower/rake to groom the traps has severly damaged their structure. A few small maintainance adjustments would make this a GREAT course.
Golf now should let it's buyers know if greens have been punched and sanded.
The staff was very friendly. The course itself was in good shape, but golfnow did not let me know the greens had been punched and sanded. Would have waited a few weeks before I played this course had I known.
This course is really nice
Other than the fact that the greens had been sanded this course was awesome. It was just challenging enough without being frustrating. I can't wait to get back to play without sanded greens. Oh, and the food was fantastic.
Even with punched greens, course was fantastic
We were able to play 18 holes on a magnificent course in under 3.5 hrs
Good but sandy greens.
Course in excellent condition but unable to rate greens since covered in sand.
Very good conditions. Great pace of play. Definitely coming back.
Fairways were in great conditions, no soggy or wet spot. No dry spots either. Greens were firm but no dry or brown spots. Tee boxes needed some attention because of divot marks but not much to be concerned about. Course layout requires you to be accurate with your drives to make it on the green in regulations. Moderately challenging course. It has a combination of doglegs, narrow and wide fairways, with enough water and sand hazards along the way. Staff were accomodating. I asked them if I could pay extra to get my own cart (I had a shared cart) but they gave my own without extra fees.
Great course, fun to play. Played a little slow however we were behind a small tournament .
I would highly recommend this course if in the area. Lots of challenging holes, deer, wild turkeys, and geese on the course but not a mess to walk on.
The views were great
I really enjoy playing at this course. The fairways were plush and the greens were awesome, fast and true. Can't wait to go back.
Course is in great shape and green are taken care of
Hole one is a tough par 5 that will kick your butt if not careful, and number to is a hard par 3 which hold up the speed of play in the beginning. But over all, I feel it is one of the better public course in the Sacramento area and if your on the south side of hwy. 50, I say it is the best course. Pricing is better than other high end course so over all, great course to play.
Some terrific golf holes no matter what tees one plays
Course conditions, other than the bunkers, were very good and greens terrific. Pace of play reasonable. Difficulty a little above average especially the last 2 holes. Always enjoy playing 18 @ Castle Oaks.
Great layout - front 9 and back 9 is totally different - bring your A game
Very well maintained. The rough is not too deep. However, the bunkers needs maintaining. There were rocks 1" were not uncommon. This will damage your clubs.
the course was in great shape
had a nice driving range, chipping green, and putting green setup. greens and fairways were in good shape. staff was friendly.
The course is great
The course was in great shape, greens where fast the way I like them.
The course offers different challenges.
We enjoyed the course. The lack of rain this winter left the greens pretty hard below the surface but they were in good shape. We will play again for sure.
County Setting, good course
Located 20 miles east of Sacramento. Greens in good shape. Fairways good with an occasional bald area. Traps are the only real problem. They need more sand.
Enjoyable outing in a semi-rural area. Worth the drive. Friiendly staff.
This is one of the better hill courses in Northern California.
All levels of golfers can play and enjoy this course. As you move to the back tees the course becomes more challenging.
Fun Foothills course
Course has generally wide fairways, but water on both sides on #'s 1 & 10. Greens were smooth and rolled true. Pace of play was excellent. Not excessively long from middle tees, which gives some scoring opportunities. Fun finishing holes with trees in play off the tee of 17 and water on 18 which makes a decision on which route to take to the green paramount.
This course was very challenging, but the course was in great shape.
We enjoyed playing this course and will definitely play it again!
Bad Golf, Good Golf Course
it was perfect, the weather the course even the Bloody Mary.
unfortunately i forgot my game
Very good
Quick greens with trees and water in play.
The course was in great shape considering the time of year. No lush green fairways but very playable. The greens were very fast. Holes 17 and 18 are very demanding requiring accuracy with trees on 17 and water/trees on 18 in play. A par/par finish would cap a very good round. Unfortunately, that was not the case for me.
