About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Awesome course
Nice challenge course. Big course not worry about others hitting balls towards us playing. Big plus was cooler and ice on cart especially when 100 degrees weather.
Pleasantly Surprised
I was reluctant to make the drive out to Ione, but it was worth the trip. Good course that requires shot making with most of your clubs.
Scenic course with great layout
I always enjoy playing this course. The conditions have improved over this year as bunkers are filled and greens are nice and firm.
Hot Day
Tee time at 1039am. Super hot weather, expected to be 109. For middle summer the course conditions were excellent. Always loved the layout, front nine pretty flat, back nine, get some elevation.
The knock of the day is Not a single water cooler anywhere on the course. This, like many courses, say no outside beverages or alcohol on the course. Understood. But then provide water coolers throughout or plan a beverage cart. Not a single amenity to assist the patrons. Only Mulligans provided the needed water.
Grounds keepers inconsiderate
Course is always in good condition for the most part. A few greens had fungus on them. Grounds keepers are inconsiderate mowing and driving maintenance vehicles next me when I was swinging. Might just be a me problem. Castle Oaks is usually a fun track to play.

Overall Great condition with fast green. Every hole has unique layout that require smart course management.. makes it fun and challenging.
Love this course but....
I love this course and have for many years. I have noticed a few small issues during the rounds I played this year. Several of the greens have big dead patches which I really hope they will fix before it gets worse. Many of the green side bunkers are very low in sand or just hard pan. Please please please give this course this bit of TLC.
