Castle Oaks Golf Club

About
Castle Oaks Golf Club is situated on the historic Preston Farmlands. The Preston Castle, built in 1894 overlooks the rolling, oak-studded hills of the course. The course opened a century later but it blends in beautifully with the existing terrain, utilizing the Sutter and Mule Creeks and mature trees as natural hazards. When the golf course opened it was acclaimed as the best public course in northern California and it has remained one of the area's premier courses. The layout has an interesting mix of holes with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are narrow and play alongside environmental hazards. The meandering creeks and several lakes come into play throughout. There are many risk/reward opportunities and golfers will encounter several hazards and out-of-bounds off the tee, but overall the course is player-friendly enough to appeal to any skill level.

A little deferred maintenance, the sign got hot and buckled so you can't use the ball washer Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Most of the greens are kidney shaped, designed perpendicular to the fairway, so you don't want to go long, but plenty of run left/right Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Castle Oaks comes from the old castle-looking build seen from the 16th fairway, that was the 1st juvenile detention facility in CA built in the the early 1900s. It was closed in the 1970s. Photo submitted by Cops1998 on 07/28/2018

Great challenging course
I love playing Castle Oaks! It is always well kept and challenging. Today I got on with a great deal from TeeOff which makes it even sweeter.
Play the course
Great parking,Pat in clubhouse in a bonus for the golf course.Carts in good condition.Course has a great variety of layouts.
Fun course. Get a GPS APP or a yardage book
Everybody was very nice. Greens quick. There are a lot of hidden hazards. Target golf a neccesity.
Bunkers
Great course and conditions, except for bunkers.
Probably the worst I have run into.
Virtually no sand, more dirt.
slow play
Very slow play. Bogged down at second hole.
People on green and a foursome waiting on the tee in front of us after we had only played one hole.So we had about a twenty minute wait on second hole. We had to leave early to get to a meeting but we had two holes to play and we were already nearing 5 hours.
Need to get a marshal and not send people off so bog down at second hole, which granted takes most golfers a long time to play due to difficulty and hazards.
Great staff, decent course
Greens were dry and fast. Have played the course many times before and the fairways were in almost their best shape. Tee boxes need work. Rough was uneven in places, about 2” in most places and 3.5-4” at others. Some GUR clearly marked, but a few spots could have used that designation. Pretty easy course with little elevation change. Open course makes it easier not to lose a few balls. Unusual winds made several of the tougher holes play longer, including 18, which is a picturesque par 4 with a high risk-reward tee shot to an “island” fairway, with the option to play it safe with a longer approach shot by teeing to a fairway to the right. The par 3 16th has a 1’ circular spot near the center of the green that is under repair and looks like a mini sand trap.
Poor condition and marshalling
Greens were surprisingly poor despite assurances from staff when called that aeration had healed.
Round took 5 hrs 15 min. Ridiculous. Course allowed a fivesome of twentysomethings who were not good golfers. Didn't realize it until two groups ahead of us quit after 14 holes.
Use Caution when Booking a Round at this Course
We had a tee time at 12:27 pm on Sunday. The group in front of us was a 5-some playing a Scramble BUT they were accompanied by their girlfriends/wives and a baby in a scroller. The women were walking out on the course and on the greens with the players. The Starter said they knew the players and would monitor the situation. We never saw Marshall a Marshall for the entire 5+ hours.
The course needs maintenance. Garbage cans were overflowing and obviously had not been addressed for several days. The rough is long and the dried grass trimming have not cleaned up, so it is difficult to find balls. Greens had recently been punched.
We have always enjoyed playing this course. The surrounding are beautiful but this was not a good experience. The course is not maintained, so it is overpriced. Just use caution if you play
Rough Course
The greens were plugged 3 weeks prior to play and were considered very slow and grety. The rough was too high where you would lose your ball 6 out of 10 times. It was worse than a lenx course (very unexpected). It appears there was not enough course workers available for the proper upkeep of such a predictable course conditions.
Aerated greens
They was no notification that the greens were aeration ready of course great condition
