Wide
Wide course. You can hit drivers every hole of Par4-5. I thought there are a lot of "Lakes" but even if there are it doesn't impact your course management. I think this is a fairly easy course.
Great Course
I love Woodley Lakes GC. It's my "home" course for many reasons. First, the grass driving range is essential.. Hitting off of mats is no fun and isn't real practice for the course. The greens were in great condition, but the fairways were cursed with severe brown patches and large portions of dead grass. Hitting my second shot, on #10, a 443yd., 90* dogleg right, from the left, dead rough, and 220 yds. out, I managed to leave myself, roughly, a 20', downhill, left-to-right breaking putt for birdie, and I dropped it. It's the hardest hole on the back nine, and the 2nd hardest hole on the course, and only the 3rd time I've birdied it, so look forward to that one! The tee boxes were hit-and-miss. Some were nicely cut, and green, others were newly-seeded and not in satisfactory condition. The bunkers, of which I found 2, were only in fair condition--the sand was very hard-packed and resembled dirt or cart path firmness, which makes scrambling that much harder and unpredictable. Unrepaired pitch marks on the greens are a the biggest nuisance, and they really should put signs, in front of every green, asking golfers to repair at least 1 pitch mark on every green. I have adopted that as an operating principle for every round I play, and, I f we all did that, it would really makes a difference, and the greens would always be in, at the very at least, good condition. When it comes to buying buckets of balls for the range, it seems that a small bucket is actually the size of a medium bucket--at $3, $6, and &9 each, you definitely get your money's worth. The putting greens and chipping area are perfect--there are 2 putting greens, one in front and 1 in back, with course-equivalent speed, contours, and condition, as well as a practice bunker and green, for refining those crucial "scoring" scenarios and skills. Recently renovated restaurant, and the acquisition of a liquor license, make snacks, beverages, and post-round meals an added benefit. 1/2- lb. Angus burger, fries, and a soda are more than a bargain. I really can't say enough about this course, Woodley Lakes GC. This course is a must for any golfer looking for value, facilities, and overall enjoyment.
Just OK
The facilities are poor, the staff looks like they don't like their job and not the nicest in the world. The course was flooded, ok it had rained the days before, but the grass had lack of maintenance. Bunkers look like concrete. Practice facility also below average.
Better options in LA
Played on a Sunday morning in Dec. Other than the greens, the course is in pretty bad shape. The fairway and areas are not maintained properly. Pace of play is decent, but depends who's in front you.
Perhaps my expectations were semi-high after paying $55, but even for a muni, it's pretty below-avg.
It literally feels like you're golfing in the middle of a park.
Good Value
It's wide, flat and not a ton of hazards. Good place to go to get your game back on track. Forgiving. Restaurant finally has beer again, but they were understaffed. Waited too long to get a post round beer as the Cook was ringing the register and waiting tables. He was friendly, but stretched too thin. Food was tasty, beer was cold. The greens are in great shape. Rest of course condition is average at best.
If you want to go out and hit the ball, this is ok
Wide-open, forgiving course. You have to really try to lose a ball. That being said, the fairways were decent and the greens were surprisingly good. Driving up to the course for the first time was a little bit of an "uh-oh" moment (not a thing of beauty) but if you can deal with the fact that this is an opportunity to spend 4 1/2 hours golfing and enjoying the outdoors, you'll be ok.
Shut it down!
Worst muni course on the planet, everything was awful! Service, course conditions, pace, price, the city should close this course down for good.
Greens are BUMPY!!
Not a bad course but was disappointed in the greens as they were very bumpy and needed to be mowed as well. I get that they punched a couple weeks back but a mow is not out of the question. Overall, open and easy but green play under these conditions was shaky.
Good Course
Course is flat, definitely walkable. Fairway Wide, and greens were seeded probably week ago so greens were bumpy. The only down side to the course is, across the street they fly these miniature plans so it's distracting when you're on the East side of the course. Aside from that it's a great course to play when it's cooler outside.
Terrible greens and rough
The rough is 10inches thick so you have to hit the fairways. The greens were terrible and all sandy even though it was 3 weeks ago they arreoratted it.
Nice round
With two other Guys ......One Knew the Course......and WE Had good fun........unfortunately you Could find several cigarettes or Bottles or Trash in the Fairways ....with Little Effort this Could be changed.......
Anyhow WE Had a Nixe round and fun
Tx......
Solid golf course
course in good shape and good layout. look forward to playing there again soon
Smooth and Open Course
I live only a few minutes away from Woodley so I find myself playing there semi-frequently due to convenience.
It's a nice course because it's wide open. You have to really try to lose a ball. Some might not find it challenging due to the mostly straight holes, but if you are still polishing your game or have a tendency to shank the ball you will love this course.
Even with a bad hit you are going to have a playable lie and be able to work on improving your game without being frustrated.
While I have never seen a marshal on the course during my times there, the pace of play is almost always good enough not to need one.
If you just want to get some swings in, or are still learning the game you can't find a better course for figuring out your game.
Not bad for a muni course
Compared to Encino and Balboa, I think Woodley Lakes is a little bit nicer but has more hazards (water, slightly thicker rough).
There are also ducks/geese walking around so be careful not to hit them. As a result, there is a lot of duck/goose droppings on the fairways, which can be annoying.
For some reason it seems to play a little slower than most muni courses I've played at.
They have a grass range but the lies there are probably the worst I've ever seen at a golf range. It's also near the airport so you'll hear planes overhead, but it's there's also an area nearby where people fly their RC airplanes, so it can get distracting at times.
Calm and Confortable
It was first time for me and my son, but I didn't feel strange. The staff I firstly met for check-in was gentle and kind. The course was kind of plain but not short. You can also enjoy putting, approach, and bunker shots. It's recommendable and I would play here again when I want to play comfortable.
As Good as it Gets for Public Course
Early round with a buddy, and was extremely surprised. Conditions were plush and pace of play was solid. For a public course, to pay just 30 bucks to walk a full round, phenomenal.
Definitely the course to play for a beginner, or someone who is working not their game. Fairways are wide, but still some fairway bunkers, etc.--enough to keep you honest.
Overall, 4-out-of-5 stars. Exactly what the golf doctor ordered.
Easy, breezy, not so beautiful
I only enjoyed my time at Woodley Lakes because I played pretty well. The worst part was the sandwich I had before my round. Just plain awful. $1 bottles of water were nice though. On the course everything was very playable and in good shape. The easy greens were firm but rolled slow and bumpy. The bunkers are few and far between and some were in better shape than others. This course was the least challenging full length course I've played in the greater LA area so I probably wouldn't come back unless I was playing with someone who was trying to learn the game. Course challenges include... N/A
Great course to work on your game.
Great staff! Wonderful course to work on your game. Nice greens. Open layout. Peaceful and full of wildlife!
Decent local course
If you insist on staying in LA proper for your golf and you want a full length par 72 course then there aren't many options. This is one of the few. It was playable, good pacing, not too busy and the greens were in good shape. That said, they were the ONLY part of the course that seemed to have been maintained. Some of that's the droute to be sure but for $50 with a cart I would have expected better upkeep. They also don't sell alcohol nor did they have a cart/beverage service despite it being a hot day. Only a half way house around #6.
Great for beginners, pricey and underwhelming for semi-serious players.
