Course is not worth the money!
This course has no character, and is in generally poor condition. If I'd of paid $40 for the round, and not $99, the review may of been better.
Hard and fast
All surfaces are firm but playable. Lots of roll in the fairways and on the greens. No ball marks to repair!
Worth a shot
The golf course overall was in good conditions. Greens are pretty fast and true not much difficulty on the golf course. Water does not really coming to play pretty wide open
A Day A Bobby Jones
Course conditions weee very good for the first year after reopening.
Bobby Jones Renewed
The recent renovation of the historic golf course was well done. It is very playable and enjoyable. The variable in teeing distance makes it fun for any player level. It is a little rough around the edges but also a work in progress. Would definitely play it again.
Great renovation
Course condition was excellent. Tee box, fairways, bunkers and greens all were in very good shape. Course is wide open with very generous landing areas off tee. Most holes are back and forth and straight out. Not much character to course. But very enjoyable to play.
redesigned course missed opportunity
standing water in the most fairways, drainage is poor, cart paths are full of potholes and grass edges chewed up by carts avoiding them, not enough distance markings as my range finder brought up the 'old' course, no GPS on carts, boring front nine, $99 is a rip-off
Way overpriced
I paid $26 just before the renovation. Now it's $100 for fewer holes. This is robbery for a municipal course. My friends and I have Sarasota addresses but are told we are not close enough to the course for a discount. These prices are insulting to those of us who have waited patiently for our local course to reopen.
Only going to get better.
Enjoyed the course. All was in great shape. Course is shorter but still challenging with well placed traps. Will play again next time in town to see how it's maturing since renovation. Really good track.
Remodeled Bobby Jones - Jan 2024
First time playing the re-designed Bobby Jones Golf Club. Played from the tips (~6700 yards with the front being longer at ~3500 and the back nine closer to ~3200). The highlight for me was definitely the green complexes which were large and domed in typical Donald Ross fashion. Greens and bunkers were the highlight of course conditions and rolled true. I also found the tee boxes to be in pretty good shape but some a bit soggy. As some reviews mentioned, there are areas of the course that are very wet - even muddy - this includes some portions on fairways.
I really enjoyed the layout(never played it when it was two courses so nothing to compare it against). I’m a longer hitter so they course length was not challenging though it was again wet(limited roll). There are two longer length par 3s that were ~226yds and ~237yds which presented a nice challenge. I found the holes had a solid variety and were not repetitive. The course isn’t the most visually stimulating but this didn’t bother me as it is a very solid layout from start to finish.
Another note worth mentioning: They use black flags and the flagsticks do not have prisms to shoot distances(no GPS in the carts and the downloadable app didn’t seem to work very well). With the often times elevated green complexes, several times I found it hard to spot the flag(I’m in my late 30’s for what it’s worth) as the black would blend in. Trying to shoot a distance without prisms on the flags also required more time. It’s a bit unfortunate that they had these oversights. That all being said, I was around $107 with a cart + tax and as an out of stater, I was okay with the price point. I’m not a fan of masterplan community golf courses and am a Donald Ross fan so I truly enjoyed the opportunity to play this restoration - excellent job Richard Mandell and team.
Also, solid looking practice area and range as well as a 20,000 sq foot putting course and a adjustable routing short course opening later this year - looking forward to checking out all of these on my next trip and playing here again.
drainage fixed???
I'm not sure what the plan is for the summer when we really get rain!! With short bursts of rain the past week the course is always on cart path only mode! fairways do not drain...no.4 fairway in the landing zone is a mud pit....spent alot of $$ on these fairways but still drainage throught course a mess... this is not a $99 course...and if you walk only $12 less??? this is a municipal course where walking should be rewarded and priced appropriatly.... unfortunately the private group running the show is all about the $$$....
Lots of water, cart path only, should be fine once it drys out. Golf now should allow cancellation when the course announces cart oath only due to weather.
Great old course that is newly re-done.
Course was built in the 20's and was just completely re-done. It is a really nice course layout that is friendly to golfers of all levels. No real clubhouse yet but i am sure that is coming. The listed prices for Tee times were over $100 but at less than $40 we thought it was a very good "Hot Deal and well worth the price.
Sloppy
Let me start with $100 for this course is insanely overpriced. It’s as standard as they come. Tee boxes, fairways, rough all just ok. No one repairs divots at this place. Very slow round at 5 hours. Bunkers are really sloppy, not raked and lips are very overgrown. Greens are like concrete but I will say they were consistent. You have to sign a waiver to drive a golf cart because apparently someone hit a car in the parking lot. And the clubhouse was run by people who are out of there element. Way too many tee times piled up and just not a smooth operation. I went to check in and was told we are paid up, go to tee off and am told we are not paid up, go to pay and he says we anre anll paid up again. Had to basically force them to let me pay so I could get a receipt to give to the starter. The tried to give me a golf cart key even though we already had carts. I said we are ok and he said well if you have carts just give this key to the starter? What is going on Bobby Jones? Gotta get your act together real quick or the city is going to lose a lot of money. Won’t be back till some serious changes are made.
Bobby Jones
Nice course and fun to play. The staff was Awesome! They are superior to most places I have visited. Friendly and accommodating. I will play there again. The course was very wet. However, it was playable, and I look forward to playing it when it is dry.
Redesign
I didn’t play the course before it was redesigned. I played the course 4 times since it reopened on December 15th. The tee boxes,, greens, fairways, and bunkers are all very nice. The practice facilities are really nice - several chipping greens with bunkers and huge driving range and putting green. The course is still pretty rough around the edges as it is still in the process of being completed - cart paths, club house, flower beds and all that still in progress. I am excited to see what the course looks like next year when we return.
Not really, this is the best coarse in Sarasota
