Providence Club
About
Conveniently situated between Athens and Lawrenceville, the Providence Club has a scenic location stretching right along the Appalachee River that makes it feel much more like a getaway. The golf course has been considered one of northeast Georgia's best since opening in 1998. The layout takes advantage of the rolling terrain, incorporating elevated tees and uneven lies. The greens often feature slopes and undulations but they are fair and they roll true. They are also known for being excellently maintained. Mature trees frame many of the holes and there are several strategically placed bunkers lurking throughout. Water doesn't come into play too often but the elevation changes will provide plenty of challenges. The golf course is player friendly enough to accommodate a wide range of skill levels with a few tricky holes to keep the round interesting.

Father Son outing
Course was in great shape. Staff was fantastic especially the Marshall. So much fun. Thanks
Pin placement
This was the second time playing here. Love the layout. Greens are good, and decently fast. Here's where I have a problem. Starting on the 4th hole in, almost every pin position save a few were on almost impossible ridges and slopes. I'm a 6 handicap and hit plenty of quality shots that left many many hard 2 putts and no way to get it within a decent proximity to the hole. I don't expect every hole location to be in the middle of a dance floor, but it got ridiculous. Try to remember semi fairness of pins in relation to your green speeds.
Sandy greens well worn
I played the course with a friend and this was his first visit to Providence. I had not been there for a few years.
The first thing I noticed was that the carts were in poor condition and that the facility had declined as well.
The second thing was the guy that checked us in was less than friendly and dismissive. The greens had been sanded (had I know. I would have played elsewhere). He let me know that they did this with regularity and that they played fine...not.
The cart barely ran, the pins would not stay in the cups due to being full of sand and needlessly to say putting and chipping were near impossible.
It's sad I had always enjoyed playing Providence, I'm not sure I will play there again.
Open course that plays well for average golfers
Even though the course is open and well maintained doesn't mean it isn't a fun and challenging course. The greens are in perfect shape right now and are
Rolling fast! I'm a 8-9 handicap and shot a 74 here. Love it, just wish it was closer
greens are slick
I would like to see the greens not cut so short, it was like putting on formica. The grounds were beautiful.
Still a decent track but seems to be fading
Its hard to judge this course because I love this course so much but Im not impressed with the recent conditions surrounding the course. The fairways and greens are not bad all. Fairways were better than greens though. Greens were firm and quick but I couldn't not get them to bite much at all. Might have had something to do with the good bit of sand on the greens. Overall the course is in decent condition and its fun course. It has plenty of opportunities to score but can also kill you if you miss in the wrong places.
I had the biggest problem with the areas around the course. The club house is only slightly maintained on the inside and the outside is getting rough. Places like the gold tee boxes and the areas surrounding the tee boxes were lacking. I have been coming to this course for years and years and will continue to play there as long as it doesn't get worse. If the price was reduced to the low $40's after tax or even high $30s I would not have anything to say but the price was only slightly strong for the conditions. Go play this course but don't expect the over 4 star rating it currently has. But I will say that your not going to mad at the greens or fairways which is the most important part of the experience.
Best Course for the money
I highly recommend this course to all my friends and family. Have been playing here for years and you can't beat it for the value. The course is always top notch, the staff is super friendly and they have great food.
Not overly long, but good variety of holes. Par 3s especially challenging.
A good course with pretty slick greens. Solid par 3's and par 4's; a few of the par 4's are rather pedestrian. Was in decent condition overall. Has gotten a little pricey over the last couple of years, but if you can get a bargain on golfnow.com, go for it. Practice area not the best; must hit off mats and driving range too short to hit driver if you average 225+.
fair test of golf
the course has some challenging holes and some forgiving holes, making it a fair test of golfing skills, with a chance to score low or take a few high numbers.
June 5th 2015 outing
Only negative comment's are there should be a better marshaling process out there. Our group of 4 and several behind ours were stuck behind a group of 3 very beginners. 5 hours is a bit long, we attempted to pass them at the turn but could not, suddenly they got into a hurry only to get to the 10th.
Not sure the persons name behind the counter but a grump would not describe his sad attitude, I felt like I was inconveniencing him, this is in no way the normal.
Overall totally great course yes I play here monthly and drive 50 minutes to get here so it is worth it.
Greens were fast and pure pick the line and you were going to be good. Miss the line and you could pay. Fairways and bunkers were top notch.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good fair well prices layout in Georgia.
Good local course
Very nice course. Super fast greens. If you play from the whites it pretty much driver and short iron. Couple of driveable holes. If you are local, worth the drive.
Providence Golf Club
Had a Great time playing with my Brother. We played 18 Holes. Course with in great shape and the Green were fantastic.
Beautiful course
Every hole was fun and challenging. Well kept, Thanks you course Superintendent! ! )&
Worth it on all levels
The greens were true and semi-fast and the course was in great shape considering the heavy rains the night before. The layout is great, lots of elevation changes . You should have a great round and decent score here. If not the beers are just $2:50. If your near by this course play it.
Honest review
Fun course to play for all levels. While not long overall, can play longer than scorecard yardage from gold tees. Champions Bermuda greens are kept in fairly good condition. Somewhat quick, but not overly fast. Lots of undulations! Shots can be played "down" in both fairways and rough. However, the rough is not really a penalty. Not true for the bunkers though. These are some of the WORST BUNKERS I have ever played. Entirely too much sand in them. Be prepared for plugged lies! Luckily, there are not many bunkers to deal with. Small driving range is good for warming up only, not for working on your game. And finally, the annual membership packages are the best value in the area!
HOWEVER, be prepared for less than stellar service from the staff. The pro shop staff seems to do an adequate job. And the pro shop is stocked typical of a public course in the area. Unfortunately, there appears to be little communication between the pro shop and the starter and marshal/ranger. In fact, the starters and marshals never seem to be the same ones day to day. And, they seem more interested in playing free golf than attending to the needs of the golfing customers. Seems like little thought is given to the pairings of groups and pace of play. As for the grill, if you want a decent burger and fries, or a chicken salad sandwich, etc., make certain you ask that it be made fresh, not the ones made in advance and sitting under the warmer. That is if you can find someone working the grill area. They seem to be busy in the back area and have difficulty doing both tasks, that is taking orders and cooking.
Overall though, and for the course conditions and the membership rates alone, I recommend this course to anyone in the area.
Perfect Day for Golf
I thought the greens were in excellent shape especially for the time of year. They rolled true however were somewhat difficult due to the speed of the green. You didn't want to miss the cup. The only downside of the day was having to wait for numerous holes while maintenance personnel was cutting the greens. He went green to green for the first seven holes directly in front of us.
Dormant conditions didn't bring down a great layout
Even though this tee to green Bermuda course was dormant, it did not diminish a wonderful layout that is the Providence Club. My friend and I enjoyed the course very much. Will definitely be returning during the summer to play this course again.
A perfect December day
A beautiful day in December with the weather in the high 60's. In spite of the brown fairways and roughs and the low sun this time of year limiting ball travel the day was near perfect. Course was well maintained, greens were fabulous. It was one of those Georgia days on the golf course that Yankees can only dream about.
A Hidden Gem
Played this course for the first time. It was in very good condition for late fall. The greens were interesting as they were like the top of a billiard table. Hard and FAST! They were playable but very challenging if you were above the hole.
Played 18 in 3 1/2 hours. Love that!
Would recommend for those looking to have a nice leisurely round without much fuss.
Fast true greens
Putting was fun, fast, true roll but hard to make puts.
Course, tee and fairways in good shape for late October
