Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Not the same
I used to caddy on this course back in the 70s for my dad’s blitz group. The course was in immaculate condition. It’s been a long since, but 14 out of 18 greens were deplorable and unputtable. It was a waste of time to line up your putt. From the time you putt the ball it will go left, right or hop all the way to the hole.
Not worth the $$!
Most greens were un-puttable, bare and just in horrible shape. Fairways were patchy with crabgrass & other weeds, tee boxes were okay. Layout was decent. Not very challenging overall. I would only play this course for $20 or less.
Poor course maintenance
While the majority of the fairways were in decent shape, most of the tee boxes were very poorly maintained. I had to stamp down the ground behind my tee each time to have a clear swing or I had to search around for a solid enough spot on the ground to even hold my tee. The greens were even worse. While some looked nice, others looked like an old world war 2 minefield that had been set off. Greens were either mach-5 or like trying to put in a swimming pool. The driving range was decent and I have no complaints for it. The golf carts were nice and water was provided with the carts, but that seems due to there being no water points or bathrooms along the entire course.
All in all, it was worth a try because we wanted to try a new course, but unless they do some VERY major reconditioning work, I won't be going back.
Horrible course!!!
Don't waste your time or your money! This is the worst maintained facility I have ever been to. The proshop is disorganized, the bathroom/locker room is a storage closet for spare items and more unkempt than a festival portapottie, the carts GPS are frustrating as they don't maintain your location relative to the holes and constantly lock out, and the course is abysmally maintained. The putting surface would be smoother on the cobblestone streets in downtown Savannah!!! The tee boxes are far too close to the previous greens for a course primarily used by inexperienced golfers. Incoming golfers are firing shots in close proximity to the approaching tee boxes; it is unsafe. You may find it safer in an uncabbed ball retriever at TopGolf. I will absolutely never visit this course again. This course is an embarrassing representation of Savannah.
Great design,and staff.
Great Donald Ross design but the greens keeper ruined the greens, with help from an unusual frosty winter! Gordon and staff have it under control now and make the playing experience great for everyone. The greens will recover and the course is well worth the price tag.
Horrible Greens
The greens are absolutely horrible. Dry mud instead of grass. Don’t waste your time or money.
Do not waste your time
I’ve been playing this course off and on since I was a kid. I’m now 65 and cant remember when I’ve seen this course in this bad of shape. Greens are the worst I have EVER seen on any course. Fairways are decent. It cost 50.00 to play today. They should have paid ME to play. I hope some changes are coming soon. They need to scrape the greens and start over. Won’t be back anytime soon.
Course was nice but the greens were the worst that I’ve ever played
Teriible
All the greens were sand pits and gravel. No cart for drinks. No club house at the turn. We had to drive carts all the way back tp get a water. No food except bag of chips. If I could give less than 1 star I would.
Don't waste your money
Bacon Park should pay people to play here. Greens are sand and weeds. Even when they aren't under reconstruction they are littered with crab grass. Strange layout, the 9th doesn't get you even close to the clubhouse. No cart person, better get all your drinks before you start. You won't be near the clubhouse again until you finish 18. It's kind of funny the carts have GPS lockout near the "greens". Driving on a green definitely couldn't make their condition any worse than they already are!
Need new greenskeeper
Horrible conditions, atrocious, staff was nice, payed 30$ for 9 holes on a Sunday, unknowingly the greens looked like a ww1 battleground, this course would be great if you’re trying to just get trashed and hit a ball, other than that don’t play until they renovate
Place is money
Greens are a little sandy but nothing you can’t handle. You gotta see it for yourself!
P.s. people play slow
Yikes
Layout was fine but didn’t even bring our putters to the greens
Love the layout of the course and it has a lot of potential but the greens are horrible. They aren’t even greens, just sand. Whoever is in charge of that needs to do better, it’s too good of a layout for them to look like that. It’s definitely not worth what they charge right now with the shape it’s in.
Geeens
Layout is nice. Fairways were cut well but the greens are gone.
Not worth what they charge.
Played 18, fairway was chunked with crabgrass and pitted out holes. Greens were the worse I have ever seen on any golf course. Sand coating everything, plumes of grass and diagonal lines that destroy any line you have on your putts. Quite literally couldn’t actually play any sort of end game outside of 5 ft of the hole, ON ANY HOLE. Conditions were atrocious to say the absolute least.
Will not return.
Don’t bother if you play to enjoy yourself.
