Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Wonderful Ross Muni
An unexpected find!! This Donald Ross muni has the same layout as when originally designed in 1926, the greens appear to have many typical Ross characteristics, where built up and had plenty of undulation.
The course conditions were not the best; however, the rolling layout, old school greens make up for the conditions.
Worth a trip to play this Ross gem.
Good for amateurs
This course fits my level of expertise. Plays 18 holes 3- 3.5 hours. Love the GPS in carts
Must play historic golf course.
What a fun track!! My wife and I truly enjoyed our found on Thanksgiving Day!! Older shop and club house but that’s ok!! Couple greens needed help but for the price this is a steal. I’m lay this historical course when your in Savannah!! We will be back!!
Better than expected
Played the course last minute. It was a neat old golf course, steeped in history. We were pleasantly surprised with the layout. The greens didn’t look good but rolled true and held really well. A good value for money.
Bacon Park Golf Course
Overall good experience at Bacon Park Golf course, affordable and sortable course. Very fun!
Improved Conditions
Played here in September and the course was greatly improved. Tee boxes and fairways were in nice shape Roughs had been cut back so you could find your errant shots. The greens showed the greatest improvement. They have repaired the bad areas and they are very playable. When the greens fill out they could be really nice. They’ve also cut back and cleared out a lot of the high heavier rough areas. I believe the course may be under new management and it shows. If they continue this course could become nice place to play.
Fun course!
I’ve played bacon park a few times now and this was one of the best. Great layout. Was working well with my driver today.
WOW
The best the greens and course has looked in 10 years. We just played the Savannah City Am at Bacon Park and i was really impressed. They have worked hard on the greens and improvements and it has payed off. This is a PUBLIC Donald Ross course so take it for what it is. I host Jr tournaments and will put Bacon Park back on the rotation after this weekend. Great job.
Avoid at all cost!
Unfortunately the new management regime has decided to let this course fall into total disrepair. Horrible greens, terrible fairways, unplayable bunkers. Hard pass on this goat pasture!
Blame the starter
Bacon park has potential. It’s evident that that they are working on improving the course. Range looked ok. Pro shop was fine. Unfortunately we were charged 40 dollars for a course where the majority of the holes don’t have a green. A mere hole in the ground with a flag in it, surrounded by a barely visible circle. Wish I could say that was the worst part, but the starter takes the cake. He sent 3 groups out at the same time. Constantly harrased us about pace of play when no one was in sight, and then told us if we can’t play a course in 4 hours we need to go back to the range and learn how to play golf. I wouldn’t give this place a cent until they get rid of the miserable human. You can’t talk about pace of play when there aren’t greens; and if you hit it anywhere other then the fairway; kiss your ball goodbye. The best part was leaving.
Temporary Greens
Most holes have temporary greens ahead of the City Am…Not an option for a legitimate round right now.
Get what ya pay for
Rough conditions out here with loads of temporary greens.
A little more communication from the course would help manage expectations.
Especially would he nice to know how much closer the temp greens are vs the GPS reading on the cart. Choose the wrong club a few times not knowing.
Terrible!
I will not return. Greens were the worst I have ever seen. Fairways were mediocre but the rough was really bad. The course is barely cared for and needs a complete overhaul. Stay away!
Very nice layout but subpar conditions.
I’ve played this course for a few years and it’s a good layout to play but some of the greens are in poor shape and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. The rough needs cutting and it was very easy to lose your ball if it didn’t find the fairways. The contributed to slower play because people were constantly looking for lost balls. They have improved the pro shop area which is really needed. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Fairways and tee boxes were in good shape.
