Good value
Course was well taken care. Very nice layout greens were in bad shape, bad shape but the rest of course was excellent. Definitely worth the price we paid $39 including cart
Local
Sorry but to see this course rated overall as a 3.4 is pretty much a joke. I have played Phillips park, Fox Valley GC, Whitetail Ridge, Tamarack, Mill Creek, Fox Bend and some others in the area. OV beats them all with Whitetail second. I would give this a 4.4 or so but its definitely head and shoulders above the others listed here with Whitetail a clear 2nd. I really think if you want better ratings go to a different site. No telling what goofballs are writing these.
Thanks for your review. We strive on making sure our guests receive the best type of service and quality on a day to day basis. We hope to see you soon!
Work To Be Done
Used to love this course, but after last years issues the course is still in pretty awful shape hopefully they can figure out what's killing their greens and bring them back
We are sorry to hear your experience at Orchard Valley was not up to par due to the course conditions. Two consecutive harsh winters have taken a toll and our greens have needed more time to recover this year than anticipated. We are actively taking measures to improve the health of our greens including re-sodding and other techniques. We are hopeful that conditions will improve this spring and look forward to welcoming you back for another round soon!
Not in good shape right now
The greens are not in good shape right now. They are trying to fix them but I'm sure it will take a month or so.
The foursome in front of us were two holes behind. There didn't seem to be any rangers enforcing time of play.
It was a disappointment because we drove very far and have enjoyed playing this course in the past.
We appreciate your feedback and understand your concerns with course conditions. Winter was hard on our greens, but we are diligently working to improve conditions. We recently completely replaced the putting green and have begun work to patch some of the greens with healthy grass. We are sorry to hear you had an experience that was anything less than stellar, especially after traveling specifically to play at Orchard Valley. We look forward to having opportunity to welcome you back to offer you a more enjoyable experience.
Ripped up
Very disappointed in the overall condition of the course. When I arrived at the course I had to dodge a crew of landscapers who were bulldozing the entire practice green. Never heard if they were diseased, but they were GONE when I arrived. Also many greens on the course had sod patchwork on them, and were ripped up in many places. The rough is being grown out for some reason, very difficult to hit out of. Halfway house was closed. Started on # 10, which has a different flow than the front 9. I know, you gotta play all 18 eventually, but a different feel starting on 10. Overall disappointed with the experience.
We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your experience at Orchard Valley. We are working to combat the side effects of a cold winter that impacted some of our course conditions. The process of redoing the putting green allowed us to accomplish two main things: We use healthy patches from the putting green to encourage growth on other areas of the course. Secondly, by completely replacing the putting green we have hopefully created a better environment for future rounds. Our main goal at Orchard Valley is to make sure you have a great all around experience at our course, and we hope that our progress and improvements will address your concerns with course conditions and that that your next round will be much more enjoyable!
bad greens
this is a nice course. well done all around. they would get 4 stars easily if it wasn't for the greens. they have holes and dead patches everywhere.
We are happy to hear your enjoyed your overall experience at Orchard Valley. Although our greens are feeling the effects of a hard winter, our team remains hopeful and optimistic for a successful healing process now that warm weather is here to stay. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
used to be a nice course
Sunday 230pm tee time:
Arrived at the course and before I could even tell the attendant my tee time, I was instructed they they were 30 min behind, out of carts until tee time, and expect a 5 hr round.... Oh yeah, greens were just aerated too. Of course I understand a course needs to aerate, but on top of that the greens were destroyed with dead spots, and large areas with no grass at all. This course used to have marshals to keep the pace of play, but they no longer seem care, just pile in the tee times. 2 hr 45min front with a 2 hr 25 min back only because groups ahead quit from darkness (something one shouldn't have to worry about with a 230 tee time). Love the layout and design of the course and fairways were in good shape. Food and beverage? Not sure, saw bev cart once on front (out of bud light) and halfway house closed by the time we got there. Only saving grace is catching a deal online as I would never pay full price for this course... Would have 5 years ago
Thanks for your review and sorry about the conditions of the course. We had just aerated in order to get the greens back to our standards and we are working to get them back in great shape. It was one of the first warm days of the spring when you played and we had a very busy course that day. We also have marshals on the course trying to coordinate pace of play, but there are times where the course is just overly busy.
Hopefully we will see you again and your experience will be a better one!
Wait until conditions improve...or rates drop.
Greens in horrible condition. Not worth $39 rate. Wait until you see conditions improve - or rates to drop.
Been playing here since day 1. Love the layout/convenience. Just need the value back. At this point - I'd travel further and pay more.
Thank you for review and I apologize that your experience was a negative one. We have been diligently working on getting the greens back in shape after the harsh winter, and we are seeing improvements every day. With the warmer weather approaching, we are confident that we will get the course conditions back to our standards.
Thanks!
A great course gone bad
Poor management has turned a once beautiful course to a terrible course. I have played this course many times since it opened. It had a fantastic layout, with moderate difficulty. Over the last few years, especially since the management was turned over to a third party, the course conditions have deteriorated significantly. Most of the greens have bald patches and rough uneven areas. The fairways are in terrible condition. Yes, I played last during the transition from winter to spring, but other courses in the area are in much better shape. If they do not improve the course, i will not play there again.
We are very sorry to hear that your golfing experience was impacted by course conditions. We had some turf issues last season, and our agronomic team has been working extremely hard to take the proper precautions to bring the course back to the conditions you are used to playing. We are eager for some sunshine and expect the course to improve as warmer weather arrives. We appreciate all feedback guests can provide and look forward to welcoming you back again sometime this spring. Please read this blog post to learn more about how our team is working on improving the course. http://www.orchardvalleygolf.com/looking-forward-to-a-great-season-at-orchard-valley
Getting better
The course has changed a little since I played 4 years ago. The work put in by grounds crew helped define fairways on several holes. The new plants make for some scenic holes. Greens were just punched but not too bad. All in all I enjoyed the company of the two member I joined and they helped me with shot placement. A very fine time wassail had playing with two nice men on a great course.
Thanks for your review. We are happy you had a good experience, even with the greens being punched. We are looking for course conditions to improve every day and are looking foward to a great season. Hopem to see you again soon!
Unsatisfactory conditions
Greens were in poor condition. No visible yardage markers. No starter. No cart lady. Don't spend more than $30 on this course under these conditions. Hopefully the course will be better by June. .
Thank you for your review and we apologize about your experience. The greens are still recovering after the winter but are making steady progress. With the recent spurt of great weather we anticipate them coming back to our standards shortly.
Hopefully we will see you soon and your experience will be much better!
Bad Greens
The greens are in horrible condition. The winter was hard on them. Not worth the amount I paid for the condition!
Thank you for visiting Orchard Valley, and for your feedback. Long, snowy winters typically take a toll on turf, and although our greens are a bit slow to wake up this spring, we are seeing improvements every day. With the recent spurt of nice weather along with aerification next week, we are confident that we will be providing a great turf experience very soon. Thank you again, and we would love to have you back!
Avoided all season until yesterday
A late season bonus golf day and perhaps the last decent day of 2014 in Chicagoland to get a comfortable round in. Orchard Valley was only charging $19.99 and the 11am tee time was too good to be true so I threw down on it anticipating the worst based upon my horrible experience in 2013 (Billy Casper management had ruined the course conditions). Our group avoided this course all season but the late season cost of the round convinced me to give it a try.
Orchard Valley is a wonderful track, generally well designed with lots of water and sand traps. I was mildly surprised that the course conditions had somewhat improved....at least the greens were rolling pretty fair.....but regretfully there is poa anna or at least two types of grass growing in the greens and during the summer this leads to very inconsistent putting conditions especially in the afternoon. The course also suffers because of the extreme amount of play and the lack of players willing to actually maintain the course by sanding/replacing divots, repairing ball marks, etc. A lot of the sand traps had not been maintained/raked by the maintenance crew for some time but for this late in the season I'll give them a pass. Because of cheap price and a frost delay the course was packed but a 5 hour round this late in the year? And the folks behind me that teed off at noon or later.....for sure they didn't finish before it got dark.
The course starts out with a very short par 4 and then a par 3 over water so the pace of play is always ridiculous and two groups were waiting at the 2nd tee to play when our group arrived there. I'll give OV another try next season but you need to gird yourself when it's busy because a 5 hour round (or more) is routine at this place. If Billy Casper management had a clue they should close the course today - sand/seed all fairway divots on every hole, and sand/aerate the tee boxes and aerate the greens again (I was told that they did so a few weeks ago and I really couldn't tell) so the course might come back to it's former glory next season. How about not allowing folks to tee off until the group in front of them arrives at the second tee and is close to teeing off there? And oh yeah how about telling the leaf blower guy to not follow us for 3 holes in a row blowing off the fairways (there were virtually nil leaves on them anyway so he was just keeping busy?) and then coming all the way up to the green while we're putting?
Beautiful day for fall golf....NOT
Teed off at 1:45 pm on a Saturday in October. Pro shop associate stated there was no starter on the 1st tee because he was out being a ranger on the course monitoring pace of play. While I love the layout of this course it was unplayable condition. Leaves are expected in the fall but they blanketed the greens. They were unputtable. Took 4 and a half hours to play 12 holes. Should have quit after 9. There were no rangers to be found. Horrible golfing experience!!!!!!!
Sorry for your experience. We are eager for the new season and will work hard to maintain our high standards. We hope to see you again at Orchard Valley!
Best condition I've seen Orchard Valley
I've probably played at Orchard Valley 15-20 times the past 5 years. This most recent round was probably the best shape I've ever seen the course in. Greens were fast, rolled true, and fairways were perfect. We played 27 holes for $50 ($34 for 18 and $16 unlimited replay). Great deal.
Thank you so much for your feedback! We are working hard to offer the best guest experience possible!
We look foward to having you again.
grrat
Good course for the money. Very challenging and we'll kept.
Great course - resuarant service poor
Unfortunately, the golf was great but the service in the grill was terrible, the kitchen took almost 50 minutes to get sandwiches out - the place was nearly empty.
We are sorry you had a bad experience in the restaurant. We worked hard over the offseason to improve service and we hope you try us again. Thanks!
What Happened to this course?
I have been playing OV since it opened back in the late 80's. At one time it was one of the finest courses in the Chicagoland area. Not no more. It has become just another muni course suffering the results of the cutthroat business of attracting golfers to their courses. The greens are just terrible! The fringe and surrounding rough have issues as well. Tee boxes look like a mine field. The best part of the course is the fairways, still lush for the most part. Maybe that's because the golfers they're attracting now are of the caliber that can't find the fairway on most tee shots. The last 8-10 rounds I have played there have ranged from 4:45 - 5:15 hours. Totally unacceptable! Years ago when they had 10 minute tee times and the Fox Valley Park District ran the place, most rounds were under 4 hours, and only on the weekends would you expect a 4:15 hour round. Ever since Billy Casper golf took over things have gone down hill. However I have played other BCG run courses and have not run into these sorts of problems. Yesterday our foursome teed off and caught a twosome on the 4th hole and then proceeded to wait on every hole for the rest of the round, resulting in a 5 hour plus round! There are way too many other great courses to play in the chicagoland area to waste your money here. Bye Bye OV!
We are sorry for your bad experience here at OV. We are working on improving several course condition issues that resulted because of a terrible winter in 2013-14 and are looking better for 2015.
We also are implementing some new ideas for pace of play and are looking forward to improving that as well. BCG takes pride in our operations and we constantly work to improve. Hopefully we will see you soon!
well kept course in great shape
Nice challenging course. Great greens and beautiful course fairways. Great value for sure. Excellent food and drinks afterwards.
Very nice facility except...
This is a great course, however; their greens are in horrible shape. The first hole green was so bumpy it was difficult to even putt Other than that it is a very fun little course!
Thank you for your feedback, and we apologize that course conditions impacted your experience at Orchard Valley. Although we experienced some issues in the beginning part of last season, the turf recovered nicely into the latter half of the summer and into the fall.
We are excited to see warmer weather, and hope to see you again soon at Orchard Valley.
Thank you for coming out and playing our course! Our greens have made a significant improvement over the past few weeks and we are confident we will be back to standard shortly. Looking forward to see you out here again!
