Not socially distancing Photo submitted by MarktheKnife on 07/02/2020
We had a 4pm tee time. Arrived at 3:20. When we got there, there were about 4 other groups of 4 ahead of us who were standing around waiting for golf carts. The place had apparently booked 4 outings plus still allowed all normal tee times.
Everyone was very frustrated because there was NO management. No one was communicating and everything was SLOW. We eventually teed off at 5;00 pm!!!! and were only able to get in 9 holes because it would take 20 mins to play each hole. You would literally have to tee off, then wait at your 2nd shot for 10 mins while people ahead of you finished. It was like that the entire time until it got dark. POOR MANAGEMENT
Takes too long
I stop playing this corse 20 yrs ago because it took 6 hours to play!!! It now takes about 5 hours,,some improvement but still way too long. I ve played it 3 times and it takes 5+ hours, including 1 weekday round.
good course slow play however!
Highland woods is a good course to play but for some reason at times play can be slower than a snails pace! This time we played front nine not too bad but the back nine became a slow sad pace for no apparent reason. The course is not that difficult for reasonable play and was playing well this day! The pace was hit and wait every shot, hard to keep your game in a good click when doing this and I am a good player. My wife was not happy at all! Cannot blame the group in front of us as they were hitting a moving forward even though they had no business playing from the blue tees as low level players they were! But I am not one to tell people where to play from or how high their score will be. I am high 70's low 80's and in fact shot 81 only because it was so slow lost my concentration to keep on task.
Nice Course
First time playing here and I was pleasantly surprised. Course was in good condition with a nice variety of holes. Played it for $40 on Golfnow and I think that is a really good deal. I would definitely play it again.
Dr. Tony LeDinh, KY Colonel
The reception was very friendly. The check-in was fast. The stater Mr. Jim , courteous & accomodating. He was very quick in arranging the tee-off time for all including us (me and my partner). This really helped the "spacing" of play ....faster .
We enjoyed teaming with another regular and finished the 18 holes in less than 5 hours. The club's amenities were great (free hot dogs after the game and fresh clean cool drinking water on the golf course)
We enjoyed the outing and plan to return.
Terrible pace of play
I went with a golf league buddy. We like to play on different courses.
We were paired up with a groundskeeper from a nearby course. He was pretty knowledgable about a few courses in the area. Highland Woods is cheaper than most, but they jam on as many groups as they can. There was a 4 groups playing or waiting on the 2nd hole! it finally spread out a bit on the 5th (a long par 5). But backed up for a while again on the next par 3. a group 2 ahead of us was playing tees they couldn't handle, drinking and slowing play with errant shots. The ranger threatened them periodically, but they ignored him. (The manager should have came out to deal with them.) There was over a full hole open ahead of them.
It was about a 3 hour front 9. 1 guy dropped out of their four-some. The 3 continued and we got thru in 2.5 hours.
Great local Course (NW Suburbs)
It makes me sad to read some of the other reviews where people are complaining. After all it is a public course catering to all ages. The greens super has done an excellent job, the head pro Mr. E is very personable and I understand that he is an excellent instructor (from comments I have heard). Last but not least, the staff (starters, etc) are always polite and very helpful. The only negative I have is $5 for cheap beer-lets get reasonable.
HIGHLAND WOODS REVIEW
GREAT CONDITIONS AND WONDERFUL WEATHER MADE FOR A PERFECT SATURDAY AFTERNOON...
CRITIQUE:
PACE OF PLAY WAS AWFUL, WAITED ON EVERY SHOT, RANGER DID NOT HELP ENCOURAGE PACE OF PLAY ON THE COURSE.
THIS COURSE DESPERATELY NEEDS TO GET RID OF THE "CHAMPIONSHIP TEES" AND ADD ONE MAYBE TWO CLOSER TEE BOXES. WEEKEND WARRIORS SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING A COURSE MUCH MORE THAN 6000 YARDS. TEE IT FORWARD, AND ELIMINATE 6 HOUR ROUNDS.
WE PAID FOR 18 BUT AFTER 4 HOURS, WE WALKED OFF THE COURSE AFTER 12 HOLES.
Good Course, Poor management
Pace of play was terrible. We were about 30 minutes late off the first tee, and had to wait at least 10 minutes at every single tee box because the course was so jammed up. There were twosomes playing in between foursomes and the pace of play was not regulated at all. Paid for 18 and called it quits after 9 because we were looking at a 7 hour round.
beware
5 hour round. We waited over 20 minutes on the 8th hole par 3 to tee off. My partner and I were getting stiff waiting. No we were not drinking. The four in front of us dropped after nine. It took us one hole to catch up and wait again. Management has not considered slow play since this has been an issue for years. Cut down the rough to speed up finding balls and being able to advance them. This is not the us open and there is no reason for slow play or no consequence. Ranger? forget about it. We finished at almost 4 pm and the only one there to complain to was the snack shop attendant. Waste of time and money. It may also take some time to get my timing back.
Stay away from this course!
A Monday afternoon round here took almost six hours. The rangers let groups out what seems like every seven minutes, and do nothing to move groups along. We waited on every shot. The par-threes all had five groups on them--one on the green, one waiting at the tee, and three sitting in line waiting for their turn.
Fast greens
Greens are smooth and fast. Great layout with plenty of length for long hitters. Also got my 1st ever hole in 1 on the 8th hole!
Run from this course
the course layout is wide open.Only one hole requires an accurate tee shot.teed off at 11:15,finished five hrs and 10min later. Why?The times are seven minutes apart, which is ridiculous.twosomes were not paired to make foursomes. The twosome in front of me was allowed on the course with ONE set of clubs.Four groups on all par threes. No player assistants. No professionalism.Only interested in the money, not the golf experience.I guess someone has to make enough money to pay the county politicos. That;s the chicago way.Stay away.
Great value
For 30 dollars, this was well maintained and beautiful.
