Great old and well kept course.
Beautiful well kept course with challenging layout. The greens were challenging, fun and very fair. The fairways were fantastically groomed. I highly recommend.
1st class course
Ravisloe was a great experience. Great layout, friendly staff, a real value. Loved it.
Ravisloe Two Days in a Row!
Truly love the course. The staff this season is on point from the pro shop, cart staff and starters. The course was in very good shape. Late afternoon traffic on the greens showed late Saturday but still every inch of the course was beautiful. Ravisloe is a hidden gem that if found would be a spot on anyone's rotation.
Excellent - as usual.
Ravisloe never disappoints. I like the old-style feel of the course.
Love the Layout
You need to play this course! Old style layout which means bunkers were strategically placed and greens were challenging if you were on the wrong side of the subtle ridges. Staff was very friendly, particularly the starter "Mr. Spencer", great personality and very helpful for this first timer. Go play this one.
Incredible!
First, I'd like to start out by giving you a little understanding of my background and my experience with golf. I have been in the game since I was 10 years old, now 28. I've played every top rated public course in Illinois and about 10 different premiere private country clubs in Illinois as well many other top public/private courses in a handful of other states.
How I managed not to come here sooner is beyond me, but I'm more then thrilled to have finally played and will continue to play here as much as I can. Also I actually played here twice since Sunday because of how impressed I was.
Any negative review you read or hear and should allow yourself to believe or consider would be some kind of misunderstanding and common understandable thing that will and can happen because people make mistakes. Like "The cart girl wasn't around enough, or the ranger was rude. Pace of play sucked. (which none of this was true for my experience but can happen anywhere you go)" Even these things aren't justifiable for not coming to play this course and enjoying it just as much I do and will continue to.
Course is not long, 6400 for the back tees but with some soon to come and in the process renovations, #14 tee box is being extended to turn into a par 5. Aside from the length maybe not appealing to you golfers with egos, I hit the ball long and prefer a longer course, but not once did it bother me. Extremely well manicured and taken care of. Condition of the course is the best Ive seen so far this season and I've already played Highlands of Elgin, Bowes Creek, Thunderhawk, Whistling Straights, Blackstone and Stonewall Orchard (All gems). By all means, non of these other and favorite courses of mine were in bad shape but just not as well as blossomed as here. It's really even hard for me to say that because its more of a weather thing.
I can go on and on about this place but I won't because I barely read reviews when they are this long so I'll finish it up by just saying, if you haven't played here, then you're missing out on a course that stepping up to each tee box you see something so aesthetically pleasing that even if you're playing bad, you will still be able to smile. Don't make the mistake by waiting as long as I did.
I hope you guys end up appreciating and enjoying this place as much as I do.
Excellent golf course. Challenging greens. Staff was fun and friendly.
Pristine conditions
The owners and management at Ravisloe have really put their best efforts into this course over the last 18 months. The course was great before the renovations and restoration work started in 2017, however the course is in the best shape that I’ve ever played on in over 3 years! A true gem in the South burbs. Tee boxes are perfect. Fairways are beautiful. The course may be on the shorter side, but the layout is amazing! It is rare to find a loose branch on the course...anywhere! Kudos to the ground crew and greens keepers!! Greens are in amazing conditions, and the deep set greenside bunkers are beautiful and in great condition. A course that should be in every golfer’s monthly or weekly rotation! If there is one thing the course needs to or should do...they should put fairway feed bottles on their carts to give golfers a chance to help take care of the fairways to ease the burden on the grounds crew.
Short and sporty
Driver 5 iron, driver 7 iron, driver something all day long. Only problem?????.....those pesky pot bunkers!!! Greens are well protected, and require accurate irons into them, or you WILL pay the price. Greens are fair and in good condition. Dandelions made my yellow Calloways a little difficult to find on an errant shot, but overall I am anxious for another go at it.
Nice course. The course is not very long but requires precision iron play if you want to score well. Staff was very friendly and the course was in great shape
True Golden Age Beauty
This was my fourth time playing Ravisloe this year. I seem to love the course more each time I play it. For several years I chose to forgo playing there because I assumed it was a straightforward old country club course, with old overgrown trees. I was sure I'd spend all day punching out from under trees, seemingly in the middle of the fairway. Oh, how wrong I was.
The course's architectural quality hits you from the very first tee shot. The routing is interesting and challenging, though offers a very playable experience for beginners. Donald Ross' greens always offer a challenge. Bunkering is outstanding, especially around the greens (see holes 4 and 18). Being a long-time private club (turned public in 2009) has conditioned the course very well. Even in the Winter/early Spring months, conditions are very good.
I can't say enough good things about Ravisloe. The course, the clubhouse, the staff, the grounds crew, the halfway house....it all contributes to an amazing round of golf.
One addendum to my review:
the sand in the traps is a bit on the heavy side - kind of like sandbox sand. My only suggestion would be to add some higher quality sand to the bunkers.
Decent shape for early season
Always have liked the course. Was nor aware of condition of greens. All aerated and sand filled. Ball bouncing everywhere on putts. Still early, to be expected but wish courses would list green aeration on the golf now listings.
Fun Layout
Excellent variety of holes, course in very good condition for this early in the season. The layout is conducive to walking rather than riding. The staff in the clubhouse were very friendly and touch the time to give a little history of the course and explain the layout. Well definitely return.
How to spoil a great golf venue in a few weeks !
I have played at Ravisloe for the past 10 years. The last management change is a DiSASTER! How can you do worst than that!
Ravisloe was owned and managed as a family enterprise. It was owned by a very successful french canadian Dr. Claude Gendreau .You had a distinct feeling of belonging to a private country club. I have organized several very successful corporate outings.
Last year the management was taken over by a corporation.....and they are killing its uniqueness. it's like any other public course. The atmosphere has change for the worst...tee time are now through Gol Now like any other municipal course, good by friendliness, chat on line, answering service....
Good luck....
