Impossible Greens - Literally

I have never written a review before as i generally like to play any and all courses and think they are all great in their own way. But this course i just had to write a review on as the greens are unlike anything i've ever played before. I'm a 6 index and definitely a below average putter, but, and i'm not exaggerating when i say this, these greens are laughable they are so hard. See attached pic, about 80% of the greens are like this on the course. They apparently just put a lot of money into the course and the greens and i honestly think they overdid it on the greens. That said, the rest of the course is great...it's a shot makers course so it's tight and short. I was just frustrated today as too many close shots rolled 30 feet past into a crevasse due to these ridiculous greens. Good luck out there!

Amazing Course

The transformation at the Mt. Prospect Golf Club from the old course to the newly renovated course is night and day. The practice facilities are top notch with a large bent grass driving range, huge practice putting green and beautiful short game area with a bent grass approach and bunker.

The course itself went being really flat and boring all over from the tees all the way to the flat, circular greens to having beautiful mounding with all long grass all around the course giving it some character. All 18 greens are replicas of greens from around the world, which is really cool. The greens are challenging, but that is what makes the course. The course itself is only 6,300 yards long so a good drive leaves you with wedge in your hand on most holes so the challenging greens make up for what the course lacks in distance. A perfect formula from a perfect course.

Conditions are pretty good considering the extremely hot, humid and rainy summer they had to deal with trying to grow everything in. Remember, the course just opened last August! Give it another year and by next fall the course should be in perfect condition. So if you are looking for nice course and/or practice facility, I strongly recommend you give MP a try.

Great hidden gem

Great neighborhood course and incredible value for the money. Grounds crew does a great job and course is always in private club condition. Practice facilities are second to none in the area with an all grass range and large putting and short game greens. A must play!

Nice course good value

For $35 it was hard to beat. The greens were brutal. hardly a flat putt all 18 holes. Could have been a little less undulation in the greens to make it a little more playblable.

Redesigned Greens are complete overkill

Mt. Prospect's recent redesign resulted in a course that's in extremely nice shape (for the time being). Have a feeling conditions will deteriorate over the next few years due to the amount of play it gets...tees/fairways are in great shape for now but likely will be divot laced in a few years...... Don't get me wrong it's a really fun course to play but I'll agree 100pct with other reviewers.....the undulations in almost all of the greens are way too difficult to navigate for the average muni player and high handicappers will take forever to get around the track. Getting from tee to green is fine but observing other groups on the course it takes forever to hole out and also observed a lot of frustration (3 putts and 4 putts galore)....golf should be fun. Having course knowledge helps but why design greens where it seems you need luck rather than skill to not have your ball end up in an area of the green where you can't even putt and or get a putted ball through the fringe to even stop within 20 feet of the hole. I really was tempted to take out my lob wedge from 45 feet on the 11th green just so I could have a reasonable chance to get the ball to 5 feet or less....and there are several other green sites where this same condition could happen quite easily. The 2nd hole a long 400 yard plus par 4 the flag was in the back right and you have a 7 yard by 7 yard upper tier to hit with a long iron/hybrid fairway wood approach to even have a reasonable birdie putt? 5 star conditions and amenities at this track. 2 stars on the redesigned greens.....you should get a free beer if you don't 3 putt at least once....no 3 putts would be quite an accomplishment for any golfer playing this track. I'll definitely return to Mt. Prospect because I do like challenging greens.....our group had a great day and it's a very pretty golf course.

Mt. Prospect Golf Club

Played here several times since renovating in 2015 after never playing it before. All I can say is this is a fantastic golf course for anyone that appreciates turn of the century (Raynor, CB MacDonald, etc) architecture. Having played some of the great originals (Yeamens Hall, Chicago golf, country club of charleston) this is right up there in terms of layout, playability, and most important incredible green complexes. A must play for any Raynor fan, even though it's not a Raynor.

The downsides: pace of play is a death march! Incredibly difficult green complexes slow down the traditional clientele, which are typically older due to a whopping 6300 yards from the tips. And the greens themselves are beat up. Not so much at the beginning of the year but when I played yesterday they looked like no one has ever repaired a ball mark, which is the greatest shame because these greens were far and away the best I had ever played on a muni and rivaled some legit private clubs!

Overall a must play for a shot maker or a fan of old school architecture

I would play again......

It's a good little course at 6300 yards from the tips. The greens are very undulating so expect maybe a few 3 putts and 4 putts depending on your skill? The course is not overly difficult and think it's probably quite fun for most. I do not like the course layout as many holes are right next to each other and people are yelling FORE all over the place. This is a little dangerous in my opinion. We had young kids in front of us for the front 9 which really slowed down the course and rangers were nowhere to be found. Fortunately they dropped off after 9 and it was a much better pace. We paid $35 w/cart to play but there are better, more challenging courses where you're not dodging balls for less. The course is well maintained but unless I get some type of bargain price of $30 or less I probably won't be back. If you've never played it, I'd give it a shot as this is only my opinion. I'm an 8 handicap golfer.

Great course. poor staff

Showed up 35 minutes early. No one on first two holes. Starter insisted we wait for our tee time. Ended up teeing off 15 minutes late. 6 hours later walked off on 15. No R where to keep place of play. Course itself is nice , people running the place have POO for brains

Tricky

3rd time I have played this course in the past three weeks after never having played there before. This course has a great layout. Fairways have hard ground and the ball goes more distance as a result. Will use my 3 wood of the tee next time on a few of the holes. Course condition is excellent and you can score if you get it on the green away from the undulations, of which there are many. I will definitely be back again.

Fun Course

This is my first time playing a complete 18 since it's been renovated and I can't be more pleased. It's a pleasure to play with so much variety in the holes. The green complexes are tough and put a premium on putting the ball in the right place on the greens. Greens were fast but fair and ball rolls true. Bent grass fairways reward straight tee shots with plenty of roll and added distance. Had one measured at 270 yards and my best usually tops out around 230.

Course isn't all that long so playable for almost any level.

"Defense wins championships?"

1st time on the reworked MPGC. The changes to the layout of the tees, fairways and bunkers are really well done. Fine practice area as well. The place LOOKS great and holes are fun to play. Fun that is, until you get to the greens. Then the fun turns to frustration. Maybe the most tricked up I have ever played. Multiple shelves so small that they won't hold a well struck approach and also very hard to judge for speed due to the large inclines. I hit 12 greens and felt comfortable with 2 attempts for birdies. The rest were all defensive strokes. Too bad because the rest course requires a lot of strategy.

I guess if you played here 15-20 times, you might have the greens figured out.

Greens don't fit clientele

I had a chance to play the course approximately a year after the redesign re-opening. While there have been some hole design changes on 1, 4, 9, 10,,11,&12 & 18, there really isn't much that they could do to change the course given the size of the property. Essentially, you have a muni layout without any real memorable picturesque holes. But then again, isn't that what a municipal course usually offers?

This brings me to the main gripe. I played with many long time MP regulars that are actually relatively good golfers with handicaps ranging from low single digits to about 20. These "regulars" were unanimous in their opinion of the greens. They roll smooth but are too tricked up for the clientele. I'm sure the redesign committee in MP had good intentions with the architect that they picked but they lost site of the fact that MP is a muni course. The tricked up greens with multi-tier designs just don't fit. The regulars that play there are mostly in agreement on this fact. You could hit a shot 6 feet away from a pin placement and end up 30 feet away if the ball spins to a different tier. This might be OK for the pro or competitive golfer but for a less skilled golfer or newer player, this will lead to frustration. I've said this before, in an era that golf is trying to embrace more new players to the game, why would you design greens like this at a muni?????why???? In addition to the frustration, the greens also feed into excessively slow play. We played early on Sunday and took over 5 hours to play. It's not like MP is a long course or even spread out. This is a very condensed course and the greens have only made a painfully slow course even slower.

Ranger needed

There was no starter and no rangers on the course. The foursome in front of us was extremely slow. They were 2 full holes behind the group in front of them. We were able to go ahead of them after 9 holes when they stopped to grab a bite and then had no issues. They need someone on the course to speed up the pace when needed.

It's not easy being green!

Tough greens if you've never played the course.

Staff was very pleasant, pace of play was not.

Waited every single hole. some holes were backed up

3 groups. Thankfully it was a beautiful day.

Will have to play it again during the week when it's not a 5 1/2 hour round...hopefully.

Great course, tough greens!

Recommended for any weekly golfer looking for a new place to play. The course is in great shape and the staff are very friendly. The greens are very very difficult, don't expect to post a great score. Cart service came around every 3-4 holes and the pace of play was quicker than expected. Overall, great day of golf. I will be back to play the circus greens sometime soon.
