Good course for the money, with drawbacks
Great value for the money. For $20, you get some beautiful scenery, a couple of tricky shots, some challenging par 3's, and par 5's that want you to par them. I liked the greens a lot - not perfect shape, but more than what I expected for the price. I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed my time at Southwind.
However, there is one major drawback that needs to be addressed. The fairways are not cut short enough. There are multiple holes where you can't see when the fairway ends and the rough begins. I spent 5 minutes looking for a tee shot in the middle of the fairway - I only found it because I came right up on it.
Overall a good experience.
Good day
Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great shape. I only wish there was a ranger to speed the pace of play. Front 9 was played at good pace. However everything backed up starting at hole 10. There were 2 groups waiting as we came off hole 9. We were 2.5 hours on back nine. It was backed up by a very slow 4some followed by 2 2somes and our 4some. Course was fairly open in fron of them. Golf is not fun when you wait on every shot. Single guy behind us quit and left because so slow.
Southwind Golf Course Review
Overall, the course is a great value for the money you spend. The only thing I wish they would maintain better are the tee boxes. Overall, fairways and green are very well maintained.
Few Postives, Lots of Negatives
This is my first playing this course and I just wanted to play it to see how it was because I have played most of the courses in the area.
To start off, I'll talk about the positives:
The staff was very friendly and helpful
The greens are actually in decent condition and rolled very well
The course is very scenic and pretty
The negatives (there are a lot):
The tee boxes are horrendous; the grass is very high and is pretty much fairway grass; almost all of the tee boxes are slanted or uneven
The fairways are also terrible and in most places you can't tell the fairway from the rough. I lost several balls that were good shots just because the grass was so high and it is obvious that it had not been cut in awhile. I could be out of the fairway by a few feet and not find my ball, it was seriously ridiculous.
The pace of play was terrible, and I was just a single. Two of the groups in front of me would not let me play through so I just had to skip the holes that they were playing and I didnt even finish the round because of pace of play was so slow.
I have honestly never had a worse experience golfing. I wish the staff was indicative of how the course was because I'm sure it would have been a great time but the extremely poor condition of the course and the very slow pace of play made this a horrible experience and I would not recommend playing here unless you are just going to practice and have plenty of shag balls with you.
Fun course, great value
Not the features of a high dollar course. The fairways are not plush and it's definitely not challenging as far as tight fairways and hazards which is fine by me.
The good stuff: Better than average greens, nice layout with rolling hills, friendly staff and fairly well maintained.
Overall a great value, will play again!
Enjoyable Sunday
Don't get me wrong I enjoy the course, it's fun and wide open but you get what you pay for, there are no outlined fairways, the tee boxes are rough and a lot of areas were overrun with weeds, the greens were in pretty good shape, all in all had a good time
Needs Attention
I know it's early in the season and I have played this course many time over the years let me start by commending them on their almost always nice greens they rolled very well, However the TEE BOXES, and FAIRWAYS need some attention. They used to call this place a cow pasture and that's what it resembled.. And one more thing the bathroom at the club house smelled like a friggin porta potty.. And the actual porta potties have not been attended to.. Scrambled around to a 75
Good course for the price.
Nice course for the price. Staff is always very friendly. Pace of play was good. Course condition was good for the time of year. I have played this course several times over the years. Greens are always in good shape.
Do-over
I played here several years ago in a scramble and only remembered a few holes. My wife played it for the first time. A very enjoyable round. some challenging holes and fun to play. I know it's early in the season, but the tee boxes were not very good. Unlevel and a lot of bare spots. It was hard to get your feet set to hit. Fairways were mostly good. The greens held nicely. I had trouble putting because the greens were slow. Overall, we will be back.
good again
Have played this course twice with my wife. The staff was great both times. The layout of the course is fun and challenging. We will be back again!
Fun to play
This course is fun to play and is very "friendly" to the less skilled, but can still challenge the "pros". It is not fancy, but the conditions are very playable. Greens were faster than I am used to, but very playable. Pace of play was good until the back nine, where a foursome had teed off the back, and not interested in letting our twosome through. The staff was friendly.
Meh...
The course is ok. Decent shape. Tee boxes are long. Pace of play is horrid. Sixsomes evening the course. People yelling in your backswing. But at $20 that's to be expected.
Easy access
Fun course, good price. Fairways could be better.
It's late fall
Greens are in great shape. Temporary tee boxes are in use to allow recovery of the permanent boxes for next season. Considering the time of year and associated weather course was in fair condition.
Terrible
Tee boxes were terrible as were the fairways. Greens were in good shape. Only played nine holes and quit, well actually we only played eight. There was one hole that somehow we missed. Hard to tell which direction to go on some holes.
First time
Overall I really liked the course. I would like to play it when the t boxes are in the normal locations. I guess these are Winter location spots and at times are tough to use. I'll be back because I liked the layout and I am partial to hilly courses.
Overall an excellent value.
Could Use Some Work
I had a hard time distinguishing the fairway from the rough. Crab grass and weeds cover the fairways.
The tee boxes are uneven. Some are dirt but most are crab grass and weeds.
The greens are kept really nice.
On your comment about those in front of you, I totally get that. It gripes me also when others don't follow golf rules and extend courtesy to faster moving groups/players.
