A Disappointing Mess Masquerading as a Course
Don't be fooled by the prestigious Rutgers name – this golf course is an absolute nightmare.
As for the course itself, the rough was an unkempt disaster. In some areas, the grass reached over 5 inches, making it nearly impossible to find errant shots. It was like searching for a needle in a haystack, except it was a dense, overgrown jungle. Forget about playing by the rules – you'd be better off bringing a machete to hack through the rough.
The one saving grace, if you can call it that, were the tee boxes. They were surprisingly well-maintained, almost mocking the dilapidated state of the rest of the course. It was like being served a fancy appetizer at a run-down diner – a cruel tease of what could have been.
With no beverage cart services on an 82-degree day and no water anywhere on the course, I felt like I was traversing the Sahara without an oasis in sight.
But the real kicker was the exorbitant $55 fee for the privilege of walking this sorry excuse for a golf course. It's highway robbery, plain and simple. For that price, I expected pristine conditions and world-class service. Instead, I got a subpar experience that left me feeling robbed and thoroughly unsatisfied.
The only positive aspect of my round was the abundance of lost balls I collected. It seemed like every other golfer had given up on finding their wayward shots in the unruly rough, leaving a treasure trove of forgotten balls just waiting to be claimed. Found more balls than I lost, which is a damning indictment of the course's playability.
In short, Rutgers Golf Course is a disgrace to the sport of golf. The staff's indifference, the unkempt rough, and the outrageous greens fees make this course a hard pass for any self-respecting golfer. Save your money and your sanity – steer clear of this golfing catastrophe.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
My friends and I play regularly at this Course. Greens were very fast. They have not maintained it well. No cart person going around but they don't allow outside drinks. That's for starters!
There was this ranger who was harassing us to move faster. We told him we started a little later because there was a mixup. He still was telling us to lay faster. They expect us to play in 4 hours, which is absurd unless you are playing a twosome and your partner is Scottie Schefler. Don't waste your time here.!
Great conditions but staff kept saying we were behind
Was a terrific course, great conditions! But the only thing was we were told to hold off on our start time even though we were ready, this caused us to be about 15-20 minutes behind. Then the staff person driving around trying to keep the pace as he came around four times to tell us. This was distracting the rest of the game. We had the last driving cart so I guess they wanted to get them back at a certain time. Overall, we would still go there to play because it is a well kept awesome course.
Best Value in NJ (So far…)
I have not played every public course in the state, but so far this is the best value I’ve found. Course is fun and very walkable, and in pristine condition right now. Long enuff for most, and challenging, especially if you don’t keep it in the short stuff (gnarly rough throughout).
And pace of play! finally, a course that cares about this. So much fun not having to wait at every single tee box. Can’t remember last time i played a 4 hr round on a weekend.
As a guy who loves college towns, it’s also really cool to play while surrounded by the Rutgers campus.
NOT for me
Heard so much about this course . . . Especially the Rangers push you along . . Well they must have been OFF their game today as we waited on many holes for the two or three groups in front of us . . . I have ZERO interest to play here again
Always a good course
Rutgers is playing tough these days. The greens are running faster than a few weeks ago. The rough is higher than last season making rounds a challenge. Gotta up my game.
No real help
The course is in excellent shape.
All good,
Except — a 4 some , all walkers , were painfully slow . Beginning on the 4th hole we were constantly waiting .
A ranger told us the group ahead would “skip” a hole - there was no one ahead of them
They skipped 11. We played 3 holes and were waiting on 14.
We should have played through ,
Rutgers GC
Huge bang for your buck if that’s a factor. Excellent condition particularly the greens. Beautiful roll, true breaks, no gimmicks. You hit a good put on your line your gonna like it.
