Oak Valley Golf Club
About
Oak Valley Golf Club boasts the only Arnold Palmer-designed course in the Winston-Salem area. The course sprawls across what used to be old dairy farmland, nestled in the North Carolina foothills. Palmer utilized the rolling, wooded terrain and transformed the site into one of the Triad’s most scenic golf courses. The layout presents many challenges, including strategically placed sand traps along the undulating greens. You will also come across a fair amount of water hazards throughout the golf course. Palmer, known for his "go for broke" playing style, incorporated several interesting risk-reward holes and it has become what the course is known for. Good drives will be generously rewarded while an errant shot will make it tough to even get a bogey. Oak Valley Golf Club is a favorite among local golfers.

Nice Course and Good Time
This was my first time playing Oak Valley. My friends that I played with have played there many times. We chose Oak Valley due to the heavy rains that we received the day before and my friends said that the course drains very well. They were right. The course is in good shape and although it was cart path only, we really enjoyed our round. This course has lots of elevation change and challenging holes. The greens were in good shape and will be better as the summer and warmer weather arrives. This course I can see as a very big challenge when it drys out and gets warm. It was definitely a good experience and I will be back in the very near future. Great golf now rate as well!
What a great course !
This Arnold Palmer designed course was everything I had hoped it would be. My lifetime friend and I played on a beautiful day and dispite the aeriated greens, we couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. I drove 50 min to get here and will be glad to do it again. We are definitely coming back to this jewel. Highly recommend.
Great course
Great course conditions and friendly staff. Everything was also reasonably priced especially for the environment it was it.
Greens were very good.
Played as a threesome on a Monday afternoon. Good pace as it was not very busy. Challenging layout with interesting line choices. Greens were firm and quick, rolling true. Lots of unrepaired ball marks on the greens. A couple of bunkers weren't groomed, which is always disappointing. Overall, great experience.
Great Value
My group and I took advantage of a last minute deal so no way we can complain about the value. But at 3 times what we paid it still would have been good. The greens were the fastest I've played this year and rolled true. The course was wet but compared to many I've played after lots or rain it was above average. Will return for sure.
Great layout, conditions questionable
We have always enjoyed playing here. The range (and balls) could use an upgrade. I know it is winter golf, but some sand in the bunkers and having them raked does not seem too much to ask for $39.
the king
Fair ways are narrow and lots of hazard very hard to drive it as usual of Palmer course. Green rolls great. Best green I ever played. One thing I don't like is some holes has so many houses prevent nice view.If there are trees instead of houses it would be much better view.
First time is the charm
After some recent heavy rains I was unsure of what I might encounter on my first trip to Oak Valley. Yes there were signs throughout of the recent deluge (washed out bunkers, standing water in a few bunkers, carts on the paths only, some low lying soggy spots, over flow around the creeks), but all in all the course was in good shape for a blustery fall day. The greens were firm and true. The fairways and tees were in good condition as well. Even having to keep the carts on the paths did not slow our pace as we made our way around in just about 4 hours. I was fortune to be paired with a nice young man (Matt) who had played the track before and was gracious enough to share his knowledge with me. All in all a great day of golf on a really challenging and wonderful course. I can hardly wait to take another trip around this place.
Great start to our NC vacation
Even though we were on the cart path all day, had a great day at this course to start a 5 day golf vacation. The course was in good shape under the very wet conditions with good drainage, undulating greens, great fairways, and beautiful scenery on the course.
course getting better
the course is really getting in really good shape. It has come a long ways from where it was. Greens where nice and speedy.
Pretty good course with a few silly holes
Overall a solid course. Holes 5 and 6 don't make sense to me. 13 and 14 are basically the same hole, long dogleg left's'.
That being said its a solid course for the $.
Staff was rude
Staff did not like us showing up 55 minutes before i tee time because we used the cheap tee time thru golfnow.
Golf
Course had some bad winter kill on front but greens were good and back was in good shape
Winter kill?
I have played here several times but this is by far the worst condition I've ever seen it in. Many holes have been reduced to par 3's or short par 4's. It is nearly all cart path only which in June/July in the south is NOT GOOD. There is a notice posted at the clubhouse which says there was a "winter kill", but the attendant didn't bother to say anything about the terrible conditions, and you can't tell as you drive in because the first two holes look fine. Unfortunately they are the best holes on the course. The only good thing is that because it is in such bad shape, it isn't very crowded, you can play fast and get the heck out of there.
Ranger needs to learn his job
The one positive is that the greens are in great shape. They are the best out of any courses I've played so far this year. I'm from the area and have played Oak Valley around 20-25 times. The fairways are burnt and non existent, but that's not the issue I dealt with today. Because the fairways are in such bad shape, there are 4 holes on the front nine that are cart path only. We adhere to those rules out of respect for the course even though it does result in slower play. We had a 4-some that teed off at 750 am. After finishing the sixth hole we were approached by a ranger who said we weren't keeping up with pace of play and needed to pick it up. The only problem with his pace of play comment was there was a 2-some in front of us and we weren't far off their pace despite playing with 2 more people in our group. We told him that we were on pace to finish the front nine in 2 hours with carts on path for half the holes, and he said he was responding to a complaint and we needed to play faster. We thought the group behind us was complaining because they were chatting with the ranger after he spoke with us, and they were attempting to play at as brisk a pace as possible. We let the group behind us pass while we were on the green of the 8th hole. While waiting for them to putt, we asked if they were the ones who complained to the ranger. One guy in the group finally responded that they did complain because we weren't keeping up with pace of play, and he also felt it necessary to tell us they weren't even playing all that fast because their best player already had 3 double bogeys so far. I'm not sure why he felt necessary to provide that information but he did. We ended up waiting around 10-15 minutes on the 9th and 10th tee boxes before they got about a half a hole ahead. Despite keeping the cart on the path for about a third of the total holes, getting haggled by the ranger and then dealing with the group as they played through, we finished our round in exactly 4 hours and 1 minute which is completely acceptable especially considering the circumstances. The group that we let pass, despite all their complaints, finished the round about 7 minutes ahead of our group. Dealing with the group was very frustrating, but the ranger should have understood that we were playing at an acceptable time and handled the situation better instead of continuing to insinuate that we were in the wrong. the haggling was completely unnecessary. I will stick with Tanglewood and don't plan on playing Oak Valley in the future.
Fairway issues
The greens were ok, but slow and the fairways have some sort of issue with disease. I usually love this course, but this was the worst that I had seen it.
Disappointed in Condtions
My wife and I played on May 19. I've played this course numerous times before but for the first time in several years. As usual, we were made to feel welcome in the clubhouse.
But the fairways were predominantly brown, seemingly burned out. The greens were terrific as usual.
I've played in the past with conditions pristine even in the hot months of July so to see it in this condition well into May was very disappointing. I gave it an Average rating because I know what this course can be when in shape...an excellent golf course.
Southern Hospitality
Was passing through area and stopped in for a quick 18. Had played once before and again greeted and welcomed in the clubhouse. A very enjoyable course to play with nice bunkers. A good mix of holes. Maintenance was prepping for spring. .
