Oak Valley Golf Club
About
Oak Valley Golf Club boasts the only Arnold Palmer-designed course in the Winston-Salem area. The course sprawls across what used to be old dairy farmland, nestled in the North Carolina foothills. Palmer utilized the rolling, wooded terrain and transformed the site into one of the Triad’s most scenic golf courses. The layout presents many challenges, including strategically placed sand traps along the undulating greens. You will also come across a fair amount of water hazards throughout the golf course. Palmer, known for his "go for broke" playing style, incorporated several interesting risk-reward holes and it has become what the course is known for. Good drives will be generously rewarded while an errant shot will make it tough to even get a bogey. Oak Valley Golf Club is a favorite among local golfers.

Great value for a beautiful course
Played the course for the first time last March with a friend from Richmond, VA. We decided then we wanted to come back in the fall. There's always something about an Arnold Palmer course that is appealing to the eye and makes you want to play well. This course is no exception.
The only negative on the course is that they could groom the bunkers a bit better (but the decision to use the native red sand does give local character and they are no impossible). This fact should in no way prevent one from playing this beautiful layout.
The staff are professional and gracious. Highly recommend playing here.
Nice course.
The course was designed well. It presented some challenges. There is a great deal of water and waste areas. Ample sand traps along the fairways and guarding the greens. Only hole # 10 green was in bad shape, but you could tell they were in the process of making repairs.
I deducted a star for staff friendliness due to when I went into the pro-shop to get some crackers and a sports drink and the staff made a crack about how me and the person I was placed with weren't going to complete our round by dark. My tee time was 3:38. Alone, I can finish in 2.5-3 hours depending on pace of play. With the other gentleman I was placed with, we still finished at 7:00 and we had to wait on one couple ahead of us and two single players that we caught up to at different times. All of the players eventually allowed us to play through after determining we were playing at a faster pace. It took some longer than others to figure this out. I didn't feel we were slow, but the staff in the shop said he thought he was going to have to send a search party out to find us. My thing is that 1) the other gentleman were paired together. If they wanted us to play faster, they should have left us as singles, and 2) don't criticize a couple players that the course management placed together which causes them to play slower. Simply don't offer the tee time for 4 golfers. Imagine if they had booked a foursome for the time slot as they intended too. This was the only negative experience I encountered.
Oak Valley Golf Club
Oak Valley is a semi-private, par 72 Arnold Palmer designed course. It winds its way through a housing development, but at no time do the houses encroach on the golf course. The pro shop, snack bar, and outside staff were all very friendly. There is a full driving range, short game area, and practice putting green.
There is a decent amount of elevation change on the course as it flows through the neighborhood. The first three holes are a little intimidating from the tee, as there doesn't appear to be much room to drive the ball. After those holes, however, the course does open up off the tee. It is very playable from the second shot on in. Most of the greens are elevated above the fairway, and are often guarded by bunkers. Water comes into play on eight of the holes. The teeboxes are well maintained, and the fairways were pretty close to perfect. The rough was thick, but no enough where it would swallow a ball. The bentgrass greens were in better shape than at many other courses in the area. There were two greens that were in low lying spots that don't get much airflow that showed signs of bare spots, but they did not affect the roll of the ball. The one part of the course that needed work were the bunkers. Most seemed to have more dirt in them than sand.
There is a good mix of short, medium, and long holes among each of the different pars. You won't hit the same club on all of the par 3's, and one of the par 5's is easily reachable in two, while there are others that aren't. You can hit driver off of most tees , but there are a couple of dogleg holes, where position is more important.
I liked the course, and played pretty well. I will definitely come back and play this course again.
One of the best courses in the Winston-Salem area
I have played most of the courses in this area. I believe Oak Valley and Tanglewood championship courses are the best in the area. The greens are fast. It is like putting on a pool table.
Very Nice Golf Course
Very nice golf course. Will play again.
The greens rolled nicely.
This is one of my favorite courses. I like the elevation changes and variety of holes. Just wish people would repair their divots. It is usually in very good condition however, this time some of the bunkers appeared a little washed out with rocks in the sand. The maintenance staff was out on the course watering the greens, on a Sunday, and in this 95 degree heat. The staff was helpful and courteous and the starter got us out 10 minutes early.
Fantastic!!!
First time playing and really enjoyed the round. A true Arnold Palmer risk reward layout. You definitely need to think each shot. Now that we've played once we'll certainly be back.
Great course, rude maintenance workers
The course is very nice and the pro shop attendant was very friendly and helpful, However, out on the course a couple of the maintenance crew were extremely rude and actually made us wait to hit shots while they performed non-urgent tasks. When my playing partner complained at the pro shop, he was told they had received similar complaints from others. Why not instruct the maintenance crew about some simple etiquette for the people who are paying their salaries?!
Thanks Arnold...
Arnold Palmer and team designed a great layout with lots of risk-reward shots. The starter didn't like having a blind first shot though!
The tee boxes provide different unique challenges. Watch out for #7!
Dissapointed there was no beverage cart on a Sunday afternoon with temps in mid-upper 90's.
Great condition , good price and value.
Always love playing at Oak Valley..
Great layout in great shape
This course has a fantastic layout and its in as good of shape as i ve seen in years . Great place go play
Always a great choice
Course was in great shape; greens are the best they have been in years! Lightning fast.
Would go again today if I wasn't already booked at another course.
A must play!
Great value
Played on a Tuesday and never had to wait, course is in great shape and very reasonably priced. Hard to beat if looking for a good public course.
Nice Course and Good Time
This was my first time playing Oak Valley. My friends that I played with have played there many times. We chose Oak Valley due to the heavy rains that we received the day before and my friends said that the course drains very well. They were right. The course is in good shape and although it was cart path only, we really enjoyed our round. This course has lots of elevation change and challenging holes. The greens were in good shape and will be better as the summer and warmer weather arrives. This course I can see as a very big challenge when it drys out and gets warm. It was definitely a good experience and I will be back in the very near future. Great golf now rate as well!
What a great course !
This Arnold Palmer designed course was everything I had hoped it would be. My lifetime friend and I played on a beautiful day and dispite the aeriated greens, we couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. I drove 50 min to get here and will be glad to do it again. We are definitely coming back to this jewel. Highly recommend.
Great course
Great course conditions and friendly staff. Everything was also reasonably priced especially for the environment it was it.
Greens were very good.
Played as a threesome on a Monday afternoon. Good pace as it was not very busy. Challenging layout with interesting line choices. Greens were firm and quick, rolling true. Lots of unrepaired ball marks on the greens. A couple of bunkers weren't groomed, which is always disappointing. Overall, great experience.
Great Value
My group and I took advantage of a last minute deal so no way we can complain about the value. But at 3 times what we paid it still would have been good. The greens were the fastest I've played this year and rolled true. The course was wet but compared to many I've played after lots or rain it was above average. Will return for sure.
Great layout, conditions questionable
We have always enjoyed playing here. The range (and balls) could use an upgrade. I know it is winter golf, but some sand in the bunkers and having them raked does not seem too much to ask for $39.
the king
Fair ways are narrow and lots of hazard very hard to drive it as usual of Palmer course. Green rolls great. Best green I ever played. One thing I don't like is some holes has so many houses prevent nice view.If there are trees instead of houses it would be much better view.
First time is the charm
After some recent heavy rains I was unsure of what I might encounter on my first trip to Oak Valley. Yes there were signs throughout of the recent deluge (washed out bunkers, standing water in a few bunkers, carts on the paths only, some low lying soggy spots, over flow around the creeks), but all in all the course was in good shape for a blustery fall day. The greens were firm and true. The fairways and tees were in good condition as well. Even having to keep the carts on the paths did not slow our pace as we made our way around in just about 4 hours. I was fortune to be paired with a nice young man (Matt) who had played the track before and was gracious enough to share his knowledge with me. All in all a great day of golf on a really challenging and wonderful course. I can hardly wait to take another trip around this place.
