Fun course, not too crowded
First off anytime a 4 some can complete 18 under 4 hours I am happy. This course does feature many blind shots and typical of a Mtn course up and downhill approaches. I felt the challenges were fair and course was a cool layout. Definitely a challenging course to play for the first time, with some “local knowledge” you could get around this place pretty well. The Par 6th 17th was worth the the hype and require 3 really solid strikes to get a chance for birdie. The Bentgrass greens were in good shape and rolled very nice with decent speed.
Great first experience at this course
The course was in very good shape. Play was fast to start, but later around #15 we got behind a pack of walkers that slowed play a little. The course was unusual and therefore challenging for me. I had a great day. The staff was great!
Last night's rain
Very wet conditions complicated the courses usual wet and soggy areas. No roll of ball and several balls plugged. Had to move up a set of Tees to compensate for lost distance.
Tee boxes need some work. Put some seed down and move the markers to let the grass grow out. Or, just put down some sod.
Good Value
Played this Saturday and the course is very good. It’s been a wet summer here in the mountains, but the course is holding up pretty well. Gotta pick a dry day to get back out there.
Hindered by Storm
They had encountered a severe rain event that required them to close 4 of the 18 holes. The management handled it well allowing us to play 14 holes for the 9 hole rate. It’s difficult to rate the course under the circumstances. Pace was good however not many people were there and the course seemed to be in good shape. There’s no way to rate the 19th hole as that was closed. Staff was not particularly friendly,
honestly acted like they didn’t want to be there
Had a good time.
Me and 3 friends played this course for the 1st time and it was great. You have to be able to be accurate off the tee especially on the back in order to reach some pretty tight fairways. Over all loved the course.
Terrible maintenance and management
This course is the epitome of a dirt track - the fairways had large chunks removed from them as if someone had a backhoe for an eight iron; the tee boxes had more sand than grass; and, even though I repaired a multitude of ball marks on each green, they still resembled the back side of braille paper. But what sent me beyond the point of displeasure was the course management. They were rude, disrespectful, and arrogant.
Do yourself the favor, don't play golf here.
Fabulous greens
Whenever I am in the Asheville area I try and get in one round at Black Mountain, as it's one of the most affordable public golf courses in the area. I walked on around 3:00 pm on a Wednesday and it was $20 to walk. You can't beat that deal.
Key things you need to know. This course is very walkable, so cart isn't really needed. It's a classic Donald Ross design that has been around long before golf carts. In fact, you'd be better off walking, as there are quite a few fairways that are always too wet to drive on, as this course does not drain well. No matter how dry it's been lately you'll have standing water in certain fairways, and patches of mud here or there. But when I played yesterday the greens were the best I have ever seen them. Comparable to some high end courses in the area. So regardless of your lie in the fairway, you will be putting on great greens.
Me and another guy walked this in 3 hours, as we weren't held up much on the front nine, and we had the back nine to ourselves. The challenge at this course is always the 17th hole, to see if you can reach it in 3 shots. Easier said than done.
Worth it one time
Decent shape municipal. Greens are mostly great but fairways are lacking in many spots. Every shot is side hill lie. What makes this course worth playing are the mountain views. It's worth it once, but not twice.
WARNING: OVER-BOOKED
This golf course has gone from phenomenal to pitiful in the course of two short years. The staff is clearly not putting much money or effort into the condition of the course anymore. Tee boxes are mostly bare, fairways are consistently 2+ inches tall, and the greens are mediocre at best. Do NOT play this course within a month of aeration as it always takes forever for the greens to recover. The course is also significantly over-booked during the golfing season. Be prepared for 6+ hour rounds if you play any time before 3PM. Advanced players should definitely avoid this course.
Fun course
I always enjoy playing this course.
The pro is a super nice guy, and I've yet to be paired with
someone who wasn't an awesome person!
They keep the course in good shape, and seldom are cart path only.
I think you would enjoy this one.
Btw, the par 6 is a birdie hole!
