Great course... for the right price.
I love this course, but the fact that droves of people pay $80+ sometimes a $100+ is baffling. I've never paid more than $40 and won't. Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderfully laid out and thought of course with more than ample challenges, but I do not see the reasons for their rack rates. At its peak, this course is in wonderful shape and even in the winter months is exceeds expectations. The shop staff and starters are friendly and helpful. The bar staff... well... hope you aren't starving or in a hurry.
Look, you need to play this golf course. What you don't need to do is drop a huge sum of money on it. But to be honest, I live close by so the lore of Pinehurst falls flat with me. Out of towners eat it up though I guess.
Not Now!
I have played Little River many times over the last 15 years or so. I've always enjoyed the layout and have always found the conditions to be good or very good. Recently, I received a promotional email from them offering a round for $45 over the Easter weekend. I used the promotion and played on April 1. The gentleman in the pro shop took the opportunity to remind me that I was playing for $45 when their normal rate this time of year is $125.
Unfortunately, what I found was a course that was absolutely SOAKED to the core and in very poor shape. The traps were hard packed like cement, the fairways (dormant Bermuda), were cut short, clippings where everywhere and everything was absolutely matted down and swampy. The area had a little rain but nothing severe. Honestly, in the condition the course was in they should have, A.) told anyone that called that the course was virtually unplayable, B.) charged people nothing of given them a voucher for a free round at another time. Like I said, the course was truly not in shape for play.
Worse still, today, April 4, it is pouring buckets of rain. I'll say it again, Little River is a great facility, but for the short term, (given conditions and rain), I would highly recommend playing elsewhere in the sandhills area.
Very average layout and condition.
I wouldn't suggest playing here given the other choices in the area. Even if it was in great condition, the layout is still rather unimpressive. Some of the greens are a little small too. Just not a great overall design or golfing experience.
Great Course! I love this course!
This is one of the Top 5 courses I have played in the Pinehurst area. I love the layout, it's challengingvery good greens, water, fairways and greens are always in excellent condition. If I could afford it I would play here every week, I play 3 courses every week in the Pinehurst area, granted I have not played the National or any of the Pinehurst 1-7 or 8 because it's a little out of my price range. If you have not played this course, trust me...you'll love it!
Awesome course
I plays lot of golf, 6hdcp. This course is a must play if you are in the area. Each hole is different and secluded from the next. Lots of elevation changes. Fantastic layout. Several tee boxes to accommodate all levels of golfers.
Fantastic experience
Every hole is different. Lots of holes to hit driver and greens roll true.
Cant wait to go back
After 8 rounds in 4 days we decided to play 1 more round before heading home. Found this just out side of Pinehurst on GolfNow and decided to give it a try. The course was in good shape for March and it was not that busy so we got out in 3 hours. We have already marked it for a stop this year and can't wait to play.
Great Value
The course was in great shape for the time of year. The range was in excellent condition even though the day before there was a wintry mix. This has been one of the best courses I have played in the area. Holes are very fun and it felt like we had the course to ourselves. I will definitely be returning. You can't beat the pre-paid rate. The water shots are intimidating but good shots are rewarded. Greens were great especially given the recent weather. I can't say enough good things about the course.
Over-priced
Course is in pretty good condition, especially the greens, but I think it is over-rated (Golf Digest 4.5 stars) and over-priced. No holes really stand out, was a struggle to remember ANY of the holes less than a week after playing it. If you get a "hot deal" it is worth playing. If you have to pay full pop, pass.
Course is well maintained
The course is absolutely beautiful and well maintained. The staff is friendly and courteous. i would recommend this course against any in the Sandhills.
Nice Course
Nice course interesting layout. Front nine is fairly open. Back nine has more tree lined holes and hills.
Very friendly staff. Fairways were dormant but in excellent condition.
I enjoy playing this course. Challenging even from senior tees. Staff is friendly. Great pub for after your game. I highly recommend to all.
Fairways were dormant but in great shape. I have played it in summer and it is superb. Great place to play and relax.
Great course nice and rustic
This late in the season, the grass on the fairway and rough turned a golden brown and the rough was deep. The deep rough made it very hard to find a white or yellow ball since it blended with the color of the grass. On the fairway was OK three inches off you had to search. Use a pink ball this time of year it would help. Yes, can’t wait to return and play again, thank you to the staff that stayed until we got in at 5:05 PM. What a great deal from Golf Now to play here! We will be back over and over again and hope you will do the same. Great Staff, Great Course, THANK YOU!
Little River
A fun course that has some variety. Normally good Pace!! One of my favorites in the Sandhills. Got a terrific rate
Open and tough
Greens are fast and difficult to read. Condition was good and fairways are wide open.
Good Golf Now offering
Nice course - good conditions, super-friendly staff. Very good value for price.
Really tough for the average golfer!
I play maybe once a week and typically shoot in the low 90's, so I would consider my self "average". This course is incredibly long which is normally okay because I can normally get 250-270 yards off the tee but I am not the golfer who can hit the fairway every time and this is where this course gets you. On many holes,(three that I can think of, but it seemed like more) I hit decent drives with my normal slight fade down the right side of the fairway into the rough. Imagine my surprise when, like I said on at least three occasions I drive down to hit my next shot and search for 5 minutes or more just to find my ball because of the mess that the guys call the rough (I never did find it on those three holes). It's not just tall but mangled to the point where when I did find it, it would have taken a pro to get out on a consistent basis. I understand making a course tough to offer a challenge, and if that is what your after then this is the course for you, but if you are an average golfer like me going out to "enjoy" your round and you don't want to have thoughts like, "maybe this game is not for me", then go to one of the many other fantastic courses in the area.
greens need a lot of work
Pace of play was extremely slow, over 5 hours, nobody to monitor pace on course. Every green was rough and brown in spots, wouldn't recommend this course for the rest of the season.
great layout and condition
Very good variety of holes. Rough will penalize. Well maintained and worth playing.
GREAT LAY OUT.
THE COURSE WAS WELL KEPT. THE LAYOUT IS FUN TO PLAY. HOWEVER, THE ROUGH NEEDED TO BE MORE FRIENDLY FOR THOSE OF A HIGHER HANDICAP. IT WAS MUCH TO DEEP. WE FOUND OURSELVES LOSING BALLS JUST OFF THE FAIRWAY. NEEDING TO TAKE A DROP. IF THE ROUGH IS BETTER MAINTAINED I WOULD PROBABLY PLAY HERE ANNUALLY ON OUR GOLF TRIP. IF NOT - MAY NEED PASS BECAUSE IT IS NOT FUN TO LOOK FOR BALLS AFTER A REASONABLY GOOD SHOT.
