About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6543 yards
Slope 137
Rating 71.9

The Barony Course at Port Royal Golf Club constitutes 18 of this well-known island facility's 54 holes.

Playing to just 6,543 yards from the gold tees, Barony is a very enjoyable course for all skill levels. The back nine in particular is a fine mix of long and short holes. Like its sister courses at Port Royal, Barony begins and ends at the club's beautiful Antebellum-style clubhouse.

From the tee, many of the holes on Barony appear to be relatively open. But as you approach the green the real challenge of the course becomes clear. The greens are small and protected by deep bunkers and Bermuda rough, demanding an excellent touch with the medium and short irons. This is a course where accuracy, not length is the key factor.

Watch Out for Pluff

The course condition was a little rough in spots.

I hit a drive just off the fairway on the 17th hole. I saw my ball sitting in leaves. I went to hit it and drooped about 3 feet into a black stinky mess. I was in past my knees. I finally was able to get out, but was a smelly mess. I found out this is fairly common in the area and is called Pluff. I wish signage or some kind of warning would have been made.

First time playing Barony

Course was in good condition, the only negative is the tee boxes needed mowing and leveling. The greens rolled true but were just a bit slow . All staff were extremely friendly.

Nice course Good value

Played this course as a threesome on a Saturday and it was great. We were not held up or pushed. The course was in very good shape even though it has been very dry. We will play here again.

Course Management

Course management was good at this course. Staff was very helpful and checked on pace of play. Starter was a little grouchy when I asked him questions.

Poorly maintained golf course

The course was in terrible shape for what I would consider peak golf season in Hilton Head Island at the end of March. Fairways were splotchy tee boxes poorly marked and grass was way to high, I can find better course conditions in Chicago this time of year. Greens were slow and very bumpy. Overall I would not recommend this course nor will I be going back, for the high price they charge I expected much more.

Average track Great service

The Barony Course is perfect for your first round on HH after a winter layoff. Not very long, greens are on the slower side. What the course lacks for challenge the staff makes up in making you feel welcome and a valued guest.
