Bear Creek Golf Club is one of the courses that makes Hilton Head Island one of the country's most popular golf destinations. Rees Jones designed the course, routing the layout through majestic pines and sparkling blue lagoons. Jones kept much of the existing landscape intact, earning the golf course Audubon certification. There are five sets of tees total, with the longest stretching over 6,800 yards. It's a course that players of all skill levels can enjoy regardless of handicap. The tight, bunkered fairways are an infamous feature of the course but Bear Creek is also known for having some of the best greens on Hilton Head Island. The finishing hole is the course's signature. You'll have to navigate your way past a narrow chute of pines to reach the green, which is fronted by a large lagoon.

Pleasant

Nice layout, no holes that are tough just for the sake of being tough. No silly layouts. Bunkers a little firm green speed was a touch fast, but manageable. Hole 18 a fun, strategic hole.

Don’t forget your stuff!

We have a place in Hilton Head so we play golf there frequently. I forgot my Bushnell rangefinder on the cart and the pro shop was extremely unhelpful. The older woman on the phone wouldn’t query the cart shop under any circumstance. She said they donate forgotten things after a month, which is annoying but acceptable. I stopped by less than 3 weeks after we played and the range finder had already been disappeared. One of the employees in the cart shop offered me another rangefinder that had been forgotten, but I wasn’t about to take another person’s stuff. I know that $400 isn’t a big deal to a golf course employee, but it was to me. Shame on them.

Good value

The course is a good value considering what the other courses on HHI are charging. The greens were good to putt. Due to lack of rain in the area, the fairways are hard and fast and if you miss, the rough is virtually non-existent, which causes balls slightly mishit to go into undesireable positions. Played in under 4 hours!

Lousy pace of play

Our first 9 was a wait for every shot, which pushed it to a 2.5 hour front 9 and made finishing in a timely manner impossible. We stopped and tried to visit the clubhouse for a refund of the back 9 or a rain check, but the clubhouse was closed and nobody to be found to talk too.

I've played this course several times over the past 5 plus years and today it simply was slow play. Took a rain check and came back to play the next day and the pace of play was much better. Overall, a very good course and they throw-in a free lunch. We didn't buy the lunch package but ate in the restaurant afterwards and the food was great and reasonably priced. The staff was great!!!

Nice track

Course in very good condition, greens were excellent and had nice pace. Traps well maintained

Surprised by the lack of GPS in the cart. Luckily we had a watch to help us

Saw the cart girl on the 2nd hole and never again for the rest of the day but the bar staff was great and set us up with some beverages to go at the turn

Where to go?

This is a beautiful course with wide fairways and decent greens for this time of year. We were disappointed with the lack of markings on the course. There are no signs showing hole layout and it was not on the back of the scorecard as well. The standard markers ( 200-150-100) are embedded in the ground so only visible once your on top of them, which makes a few holes more challenging If this is your first time to play the course. ( bring your own gps) Also no cart service this day...so for $100 a round, better customer experiences is expected.

WIth all that said, it is a beautiful layout as the houses somewhat dissappear behind trees on most holes and there are a few alligators/ snakes spotted around the course. Would definitely play it again now I know the layouts.

Nice course but slow play

The course was in good condition except for a couple of rough spots on the greens. My husband's tees were very far back on several holes, as they were resting the turf on the regular tee.

Pace of play was a problem. It was slow and to add insult to injury, they put another twosome in front of us on the 10th tee. Sometimes there were three groups backed up. Play took 4 hours and 40 minutes; we were running out of daylight.

Not worth the money you are paying

Course was not in very good shape. Find out after round there are new owners and hopefully they will put some money into this course. Greens were good. Fairways and rough were sparse and brown. Not a lot of grass out there. Would have been ok if we paid half of what we did. Lots of better options for same price in HH.

Pace of play

It took our foursome 4 hours and 35 minutes. We had to wait on almost every hole. At the turn there was a completely different twosome in front us. Don’t know where they came from. No ranger to be seen. The course was ok for the price.

Course in good condition but slow play

We were happy with the condition of the course. It was nice and green and fun to play the layout.

The starter allowed a twosome in front of us on the back nine which could have been paired with 2 guys in from of them.

Ultimately it took over 5 hours to play our round. Very disappointing not to see a marshall on the course to control the speed of play.
