Golfer Reviews
Manage your Expectations for Bentgrass Greens
I walked 18 holes on Labor day, and the course layout is very fun and walkable. However I had to educate my playing partners on why the greens were in bad shape, and it has nothing to do with management.
The Frog is one of the rare courses in GA that still uses Bentgrass greens, and Bentgrass does not do well in heat, and Georgia has been getting cooked the last month. Courses like Heron Bay spend $$$$ switching out their bentgrass for Bermuda to counter this problem, but I don't fault The Frog for not dropping that $.
Bentgrass rolls so pure, and it also holds up very well in the winter. But July - September in GA just expect to see the greens beat up. It's nature, not nurture at this point. Know what you are getting into.
The staff was great, the course layout is fun, and as beat up as the greens were they still rolled relatively well.
Sad
Such a awesome layout and nice workers but the condition is terrible. I am not a review guy but I feel obligated to keep fellow golfers up to date. Greens are toast. NO greens means no course. They need to pay a top of the line greens keeper or just how about someone who knows what they are doing......It is a Fazio course for gods sake.....This use to be the premier course in West Ga. I would call and ask about the greens before going......
How do you charge $83 to play a course that has obvious neglect? The Frog really is going down hill and fast. The pictures will show just a few things wrong(and there were more). I have played other courses, like woodland hills, for cheaper and the conditions were better. I spread the word about this place. If you can lower the price then fix the course. Outrageous price.
Not worth $80
Disappointed is the word of the day. The Frog has gone downhill over the years and is showing the neglect on the course. The greens are terrible to the point I rather played on aerated greens. The rough is great in it needs to be punishing but not when all the grass clippings are sitting on top(you are going to loose balls needlessly). In the middle of the summer(90+ degree weather) and there is standing water in fairways and the greens shows the effort of trying to keep everything alive at the expense diseased greens. We took pictures and video and sent it out to fellow golfers because we didn’t want any spy the same price and have a similar experience. If you are not going to take care of the course, lower the price. I have played other courses close by, charging the same/similar rate and in higher conditions.
Still struggling
I used to play here quite often but quit coming when they went through the bankruptcy and stopped taking care of the course. I’d read reviews indicating that the course was making a comeback, but unfortunately that didn’t seem to be the case yesterday. There were still numerous untended if not altogether abandoned bunkers, lots of unmowed rough, and many of the greens were just absolutely awful. I will say that the staff remains super friendly. But the fact remains that this course used to be great and now is simply another rip-off. If you can’t get a deep discount, I wouldn’t bother.
I try to play here 3 to 4 times a month, but I have to say that the course was in bad shape. Most of the roughs looked like they hadn’t been mowed in two or three weeks. Fairways were long as well. Maintenance would water greens while our balls were on the green. The grass was high around the tee boxes. Visible tire tracks on the greens and multiple spots on the green where maintenance had their mower deck too low. Looks like they have lost their greens on several holes where there was no grass.
Front nine, the greens are not great. Recently sanded and quite a few dead spots. Fairways pretty nice, rough very inconsistent. Some of the rough around the greens is 6in. high or more.
I understand the course had significant rain. The greens are in terrible shape with black diseased patches all over them. All shots to green plugged. Divots everywhere, so putting was awful. Fairways were ok. Rough was a disaster - like they haven’t been able to mow in weeks. Cart paths were a mess as well.
Used to love this course, so I can only hope that it dries out and bets back to a higher end course. But I won’t be coming back anytime soon.
The Frog
The greens on the initial three greens were kind of rough but the got consistently better after that. Love the layout and it is a fun course to play. We got backed up on a could have holes but then it got moving. Although my group was a little slow. Over a good experience and I would play here again.
Love the course but wish the fairways & greens would've been a little bit better shape. However, given the recent heat we've had, I realize it's hard to maintain consistent conditions.
Course not in great shape but they’re trying
Course not in great shape. Tee boxes were a 3/5. Greens were terrible on the front. They aerated and sanded recently. They’re trying but they are rough. A lot of weeds and bumps. Players need to fix ball marks better.
Backside was a little better starting around hole 14. Sprinkler systems come on during play so be ready for that randomly.
Fairways were solid for most except number 4. They’ve blocked it off but it covers majority of landing zone off the tee from 260-320 yards out from gold tees.
Bunkers need a little TLC. They need to have grass cut around them as the grass is moving into the traps heavily.
Course has room to improve but I’d give it a 3/5 currently. Pace of play was solid, no issues teeing off around 12:45. They do get a busy late afternoon crowd after 3PM.
Great course, greens not so much
Fairways are in great shape, HOWEVER, the condition of the greens takes away from the overall experience. At some point they need to invest in converting to championship Bermuda which holds up better in the heat and also with heavy rounds of play. Wish I could have given a better review because The Frog is truly a championship layout but they simply have to do better when it comes to the condition of the greens.
Greens in bad shape, no marshall
Greens have crabgrass on them, no marshall to make sure groups are keeping up with the group in front of them. Thankfully I got a HotDeal rate that was $20 off the regular tee time or I'd be pretty upset. Course has a lot of potential if it were maintained properly.
Course has some issues
First of all I am not a fan of bent grass greens. They are very difficult to keep in tip top condition. St Marlo is currently having similar problems snd some of the holes have temporary greens. I heard that the Frogs greens were fine a couple weeks ago so they can be tricky. The course does not have good drainage and malfunction of the sprinkler system did not help. Lightening strike was blamed. There are some tricky holes with blind shots but that just makes it fun. I won’t be back any time soon.
Unfortunate
I’m sure I am one of many who remember the excellence that was The Frog. I had hoped after the most recent acquisition that this course would receive the love it needed to bring it back to its former glory. Unfortunately there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.
Tee boxes are ok, grass is there but many are not even close to level, uneven footing on a tee box is too simple of a fix to be so prevalent.
Fairways for the most part are “healthy”, but overgrown in many places.
Greens roll “ok”, but every single one has a substantial fungus infestation and some of them have a heavy encroachment of weeds.
Bunkers are pretty bad all around the course.
Broken irrigation all over the course causing swampy soupy messes around the greens and fairways.
Cart paths gave me flashbacks of riding The Ninja at Six Flags and dealing with whiplash for the next week.
It really is a shame, the layout is one of the best in GA, and it has so much potential. I can see the progress, and I can tell they are trying to restore it to what it once was. But they have a long way to go before it’s even remotely worth the $90.
Best recommendation is to wait another year and try it again. That’s what I will be doing.
Challenging to evaluate
I have played the frog many times so it is easy to assess the current conditions. I wish to say that the round was good and the course played well. However, there was a decline of course conditions in comparison to one month earlier, when I felt the course was at it's peak condition. I am not sure if it was related to weather conditions or something else.
Two challenges during the round:
- sprinklers leaking at some holes, creating soaking wet areas which the carts will damage even more
- grass was not cut in many places, teeboxes and the fringe around the green were the most significantly visible areas with long grass or weeds growing
The round still was nice and the conditions did not impact scoring, but I was expecting a bit more based on my previous visit. It felt a bit like the course maintenance crew had not been active for a while. I still recommend the course and will visit again, as I feel this was a temporary moment and the course will get back on track.
Horrible conditions not worth your money
Went here there was a tournament as well. Was expecting there to be good conditions for the tournament but that was wrong. Charged 75$ for trash greens and rough fairways. Only thing that was good was the tee boxes and the starter. Don’t waste your money I used to go here and would be great conditions not sure what happened.
The Frog
This course has been a favorite of mine for a while now. They are working hard to make several improvements, to include fixing the sand traps and such. I feel like some of the sand traps should be removed and turned into grass traps! lol! I do like the layout. It is a forgiving course that does reward a good shot!
Recent Round
The course layout is good. The greens were in terrible shape. Could not get consistent speed or line as each putt was bouncing the entire roll. Fairways and tees are in decent shape. The bunkers hardly qualify for that term. They are washed out with little to no sand in them.
The water stations were all empty and we did not see the beverage cart until 16 green. Very dangerous on a 90°+ day. Overall not a great experience
