It's an old cliché – everything's bigger in Texas – but it certainly holds true for the Dallas-Fort Worth area and its golf scene. With more than 100 public golf courses in the area – ranging from bargain municipals to high-end daily fees and resorts – there's something for every price point and level of player. For visitors seeking a stay-and-play resort, it starts with the TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, the former home of the PGA Tour's Byron Nelson tournament. Not far away is the city of Grapevine, where you can stay at the famous Gaylord Texan and play Cowboys Golf Club next door. Founded by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the club is all about "America's Team," but more importantly, it's a superb test of golf. Other worthy resorts include the Westin Stonebriar Resort in Frisco and the DFW Marriott Resort in Fort Worth. For a really cool British Open links experience, check out The Tribute in The Colony, north of Dallas as well as its sister course, Old American.

Tour some of the best golf courses in the Dallas/Fort Worth area

Thanks to its abundance, accessibility and long summer season, Dallas/Fort Worth is one of America's great golf metroplexes. It's also one with a storied history, thanks to courses such as Colonial and legends such as Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan having resided there. For the public golfer, many of the municipalities in the metroplex have great municipal courses, and the boom of golf and residential communities in the 1990s and 2000s created many more options, both private and public.

Still home to the HP Byron Nelson: TPC Four Seasons

Originally designed in 1982 by Jay Morrish, with player consultants Byron Nelson and Ben Crenshaw, the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas has been the host course for the HP Byron Nelson Championship since 1986. Its contract with the PGA Tour event runs through 2018 before the tournament is expected to move to Trinity Forest, a course under construction in Dallas.
