Such is the case with Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club in Cave Creek. Now this a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design is no pitch-and-putt course. But it's a course that even hackers can play and enjoy.
The prettier of Primm Valley Golf Club's dual Tom Fazio designs, the Lakes Course proves an engaging round that will test the irons throughout, and it proves a worthy stop for all comers. It's also a bargain. "If you took this course and put it right in Vegas ... they could charge five times as much for the greens fees," one local golfer said.
There are many stay-and-play options in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C region, but none can match the combination of upscale amenities at a reasonable price, the private-course conditions, the diversity of courses and the Interstate convenience of Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Md.

Variety, value and views. It's that simple when you're talking about the Palm Valley Course at Golf Summerlin. This Billy Casper/Greg Nash-designed layout is the original Golf Summerlin course, opening in 1989. It's also the longest of the three, and the design -- with a variety of challenges in the length of the holes -- makes tremendous use of the land. If you're looking for a solid round at affordable prices with nice Las Vegas views, you've come to the right place, Bill Bowman writes.
Star power is nothing new to Idaho's Sun Valley Resort. A prestigious getaway for decades, the ski resort upped its golfing profile in 2009 with the addition of the White Clouds course. The tricky, nine-hole layout plays more like a championship venue than a resort golf course. So if you haven't checked on summertime happenings in Sun Valley in recent years, Brandon Tucker writes, it's time to take another look.
With places like SilverRock Resort, Indian Wells Golf Resort and Desert Willow Golf Resort, the Coachella Valley can easily claim to be the municipal golf capital of the world. All three clubs feature courses ranked among the top 50 "munis" in the U.S. by Golfweek, and you can play one former PGA Tour venue for less than $60. That's amazing, as is muni golf in the Coachella Valley. Jason Deegan has more from southern California.
There are more than a dozen golf courses at the Lake of the Ozarks in central Missouri, including several from famous designers, but the most underrated course around the lake may be Bear Creek Valley Golf Club. Despite its "private" status, anyone can access the 36 holes of golf at Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Maryland with a stay-and-play package. Turf Valley's Hialeah Course is the tougher and more scenic 18. The Original Course is longer but has more room to miss and fewer hazards. Both have true, fast greens and premium conditioning.

The Ridge course at Predator Ridge Golf Resort is a brand new design in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Opened in the summer of 2010, the course was designed by Canadian architect Doug Carrick. Compared to the original Predator course at Predator Ridge, the Ridge is a bit less penal, with more forgiving fairways and greens.
The Black Forest Course at Wilderness Valley in Gaylord is set on 400 acres of native Michigan evergreen and hardwood forests and cuts through the land naturally. The Tom Doak design gets golfers on the greens and in the bunkering (there are more than 100 bunkers here, and no two look alike). The greens have that classic look, like they were crafted by hand. The bunkers, meanwhile, are true hazards, so they are to be avoided at almost any cost.
Giving away land for new holes on the Dunluce Links didn't hamper the Valley Links at the Royal Portrush Golf Club. Architect Martin Ebert's changes actually greatly improved the Valley Links, the often-overlooked relief links on the Causeway Coast.

The Firecliff Course features more carries and visual intimidation off the tee, more sand and larger waste areas, harsher green sites and longer par 4s than its sister Mountain View Course. Firecliff's designers essentially supersized all the dramatic elements that make scorecard combustion harder to contain.
One of the most affordable and accessible Tom Fazio designs in existence can be found an hour's drive north of Tampa at the World Woods Golf Club in Brooksville.
