Nags Head Golf Links
About
Nags Head Golf Club has a traditional Scottish-links layout that is right at home on the windswept terrain of the Outer Banks. Situated along the Roanoke Sound, the rugged coastline and rolling sand dunes perfectly mimic a classic links landscape. The golf course is a shot maker's layout that will test your skills but it is still player friendly enough to appeal to all skill levels. You'll need a sharp short game for sure, but you won't need much length on this rather short layout. Some form of water appears on nearly every hole, including some holes that play right along the Sound, and the undulating greens can be tough. It's a challenging-but-fun round that is worth playing for the scenery alone. Unsurprisingly, Nags Head Golf Club is one of the most popular golf courses in the OBX.

Several holes run along the sound, and make Nags Head a very picturesque course. Photo submitted by JohnL1848734 on 09/08/2022

One of the holes on the back 9 looking at the sound. Photo submitted by Stephanjr on 09/30/2012
It's a demanding course, so I lost my share of golfballs (I'm an erratic golfer), but the views of the sound are great, the condition of the course was excellent (especially for an ocean course), and the holes offer welcome variety. Water but not too much and sand but not too much. Just wish other golfers would replace their divots (with sand) and fix their ball marks. Price was great, really surprisingly reasonable.
great day at the beach
Friendly staff, no crowds, great condition, good greens,
who could ask for more.
Great course !
Course was in great shape.Greens were nice. Our party really had a great time! Will definitely be back.
Watch out !
Had played here before ( 18 years ago ) so knew it was tight. First nine fine , managed my way around but then the tighter and tougher back nine grapped me. I moved up to the shorter tees the last five holes to save my self respect. I recommend it as a great test but careful !!
An outstanding course
This course is an outstanding example of a links course, which is a style I don't encounter much in Colorado. The challenge comes from 2 features: the native grasses (which swallow golf balls) and the wind (which seems to always come off the sound). This course has made my family vacations so much more enjoyable! Today was the first time I committed to leaving my woods in the car and playing only with my irons - and my score improved greatly. I've played Nags Head in the summer and in fall - both seasons have been great.
Thanksgiving week
Great time to play since we played in 3 hours. Course has several holes with blind shots and greens with some difficult pin placements. We enjoyed the diversity of the holes since everyone is different and forces you to work on ball placement off the tee. Not good if you spray the ball around since many holes are have narrow spots.
Best in the OBX
Nags Head is the most enjoyable course in the OBX. It is not the sternest test. It is not a high caliber championship layout. What it is .... is just plain fun. No two holes play or look the same. The conditions, the layout, the variety, the facilities, etc..... everything is geared towards fun! I love this course and could play here all the time without getting bored. The weather makes it all the more enjoyable. One day it’s windy and rainy, the next it’s sunny and calm. Really truly an excellent golf experience and I encourage anyone visiting the OBX to book at least 2 rounds here. Enjoy!
COURSE WAS GREAT, STAFF WAS GREAT. BOOKED THROUGH GOLF NOW SO RATE WAS GREAT. LEAVING DRIVER IN BAG (FOR MY HUSBAND) WAS GOOD ADVICE. THE COURSE WAS CHALLENGING BUT FUN. BEAUTIFUL FAIRWAYS.
My 2nd favorite course
Granted I’ve only played 75 or so different, but I think the layout here is awesome and I’m a grip it and rip it type player. This is one of few courses I don’t mind hitting a 3 iron off several tees. The views of the sound are fantastic. The fairways in great shape, greens in good shape (too Me a little slow). The rough in places was wicked and you almost had to step on your ball to find it. I didn’t hit a single bunker so no comment there. Staff was accommodating, but I wouldn’t say friendly.
course was fun to play, position golf at its best
Great time great people windier the heck made playing a lot of fun. Rangers were extremely nice just a nice course to play
Played Oct 14
Friendly staff. Course is maintained well. It is a challenging course with a beautiful layout
Not long but requires precision.
Course in great condition. Difficulty depends on wind.
The first words out of the outside staff person's mouth were, "You can play the back nine twice." There was no indication from Golf Now or on the Nags Head web site that nine holes would be closed. To make things worse, when I went into the pro shop to register, I heard the employee tell the group in front of me that that is what you get for signing up through Golf Now! He was rude; he managed to say at least five words to me and at no time did he raise his eyes from his cell phone.
Pace of play was excellent because all of the locals had the word about nine holes being closed. I had three unhappy friends with me that day. We had other options near the Outer Banks but I could get an earlier time at Nags Head. That was the basis for my decision to go to Nags Head. Wild horses, which are present on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, could not drag me back to that course.
Very nice & very challenging, just what we look for in a golf course. We differently be back.
