Brought a newer golfer to RGA as it fits the need for an easier course for those still developing their game. I had played here in a Spark league, so I know the course. Renovations underway, so not sure what to expect while in process, but the end result should be great.
Fun course but starter made it uncomfortable
My wife and I recently played at the Raleigh Golf Association course and overall had a good experience. The course itself is very enjoyable—well-maintained, scenic, and fun to play. It offers a solid round of golf without being overly difficult, making it a great option for players of varying skill levels. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and had a relaxing day on the course.
Unfortunately, our experience was negatively impacted by how tee time arrangements were handled. About a week before our round, we specifically reserved a tee time with the understanding that we would be able to play by ourselves, as my wife is new to golf and was hoping for a more comfortable first on-course experience.
When we arrived, we spoke with the employee handling tee times in the clubhouse and confirmed that we would be playing alone. He assured us that our group would consist of just the two of us. However, once we reached the first tee, the starter informed us that we had been paired with another twosome. I explained the situation and our prior arrangements, but the concern was dismissed with the explanation that there were other golfers waiting and groups needed to be sent out.
After the first hole, we spoke with the other couple and learned they were in a similar situation. We mutually agreed to play separately. Shortly afterward, the starter located us and insisted that we remain together. We complied, but throughout the round he continued checking on us to ensure we stayed paired. This created an uncomfortable atmosphere and took away from what should have been an enjoyable and welcoming experience—especially for my wife during her first time playing on a course.
The golf course itself is excellent, and we genuinely enjoyed the layout, conditions, and scenery. My disappointment lies with the lack of consideration shown for a request that had been made in advance and confirmed upon arrival. It felt as though the focus was solely on moving groups through rather than ensuring customers had the experience they were promised. I would gladly play the course again, but I hope management places greater emphasis on communication and customer experience, particularly for newer golfers who may already feel intimidated stepping onto the course for the first time.
The future looks bright
The course is undergoing significant upgrade and renovation. As a result, the back nine which will no longer exist after the work is in rough shape with traps baked solid, greens a bit beat up, and the cart paths in poor shape. The Members nine is in good shape and the greens continue to be very fast in spite of recent rain. More rain would be welcomed to help the course green up and the greens be a bit more manageable. Overall a fun course with some a mix of easy and challenging holes for the weekend golfer. Staff are pleasant and helpful. Food and beverage options a bit limited. No driving rage yet, but coming as part of the renovations. Definitely will return.
Great Value and Potential
RGA is putting $3.5 million into this course and completely renovating. When finished, this new layout will be phenomenal value and a fun, approachable course. It’s my “home course” now!
good quality - prices
Although some sections of the course were under improvement work, overall condition were good. Greens were in great shape. We enjoy playing this course.
What a disappointment
Had a 1:10 tee time, was in line at 1:03, didn’t tee off until 1:45 and the starter was too busy chi chatting with people, there was a line on either side. I asked the group across the tee box what tee time did the have they said 1:40, the starter asked why when was yours, after I gave him my name earlier, I told him 1:10, he said what where have you been I said in line here for the last 30 minutes. He proceeded to let the 1:40 group ahead of me go 1st, then paired us up with another couple.
We didn’t get to finish our round because my wife had a 5:00 meeting back home!!
The starter need to do a better job of talking to all golfers in line or make only one side not 2 to line up for teeing off.
played 9
course in good shape. No water for days. Fairways very firm. Greens very firm and quick.
Mid at Best
You get what you pay for. Went for an afternoon 9 as a single and got paired with 3 others. Greens on the first 4 holes were terrible. All other courses in the area have managed to fight off the weeds and maintained half reasonable greens. For the locals the greens remind me of knights play. Won’t be playing here again much better off paying 15-20 more and playing others in the area with much better conditions.
Very playable
Super playable course with terrific staff. Had delicious sandwiches at the turn and both the golf and meal were high value.
Shaping up to be a great course!
First, The stockholders 9 plays great! Greens are fast and smooth as they should be and more importantly they’re consistent. Five stars in Stockholders 9. Public front 9 is under construction thank goodness as the public course is being completely redone to match the stockholders 9 and driving range in September 26’. The back 9 is 1.5 stars at best. Layout is decent but the course is short so 4i or wood from the tips can get you to a wedge in on most. Par 5s are short (508 is longest). Greens are patchy, some moderate speed, some dead slow and no two are the same. Pitch marks all over, I’ll only play the stockholders 9 until the renovations are complete. All in all, great job RGA! Staff is friendly and helpful as well. Will be back soon for 9 holes!
