Borderline hidden gem!
First off, my expectations were very low. I had not heard bad things, per se, but being a muni, well... you know what I'm talking about. That said, driving up to the clubhouse is somewhat underwhelming. The shop is minimalist, but the staff are nice. No grill, but they do have snacks and drinks for sale in the golf shop, including beer. Good prices - I bought 3 beers and a pack of nabs for $8.50. (That's cheaper than Augusta N@tional!!!) I can't comment on the range, since I did not warm up, but I'm sure it's fine. Carts are nice and fairly new. EZ-GO Elite, with windshield and USB charger, but no rain cover for the clubs. Now for the course. Interesting layout, to say the least. The front nine is shorter than average: one par five and none of the par fours are over 400 yards. Some doglegs, minimal bunkers, very much target golf. Driver can run through the fairway on most of the doglegs if not shaped correctly. It was definitely nice having a friend in the group that had played it several times, so he could help with club selection off the tee. Turning to the back nine, the course becomes a little longer, as in 516 yards longer from the back (blue) tees. Granted, par is 36 on the back and 35 on the front, but it's still a significant difference. Only one dogleg par 4, so tee it high and let it fly! The highlight of the back nine is #17. 451 yard par 4. Get you some! Overall, Sanford GC far exceeded my expectations. It's a fair test of golf and for the money, you can't beat it. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the greens. Good grass, old-school bermuda, so a little grainy, but they are TINY! I'm pretty sure they're smaller than the greens at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island. I think if you hit it in the middle of every green, the longest putt you'd have would be 25 ft. Hitting any of the 18 greens in regulation, feels like an accomplishment. Seriously! Go play it and find out for yourself! You'll enjoy the challenge!
The course
I would recommend this course to anyone and we’ll play it again. There was some problems with the greens that were bare and there was no water on the course which at this time of year there should have been
CIRCUS/ PLAY GROUND.
I was at the driving range and notice a sign saying school of golf I said to my self cool then people started driving there carts on the driving range on to the grass weird but then a lady started getting loud somebody said something to her she quieted down. the instructor said were going to hit some balls so i finished warming up told my playing partner I was going to do some putting and I did then I noticed the Instructor leaving with the group of students which were seniors then when we got to hole number one their was a 2 sum in front of us , I look down there fairway and saw the group of students about 6 driving all over the fairway when it was 90degrees then they took for ever to play the first hole the two sum in front of us where seniors too got so frustrated they left the group was very slow as the instructor was teaching them on the course . then I saw a young boy riding his bike from the sixth tee box up the cart path to the eighth hole and back so i called the pro shop talk to a gentle and he said he wood send his cart guy out to talk to them . but it did nothing the slow played continued and the kid kept riding his bike now coming up the 9th green to the tee box , this is a play ground/ circus.
This course will make you play great golf
Sanford Golf Course will surprise you. You have to play fine shots to make the course easy. Hit a mediocre tee shot, for example, on one 341-yard par 4 and trees may block your way to the green. To score well on this course, have your 20- to 50-yard wedge game working. To par the course, make sure you are two under with three holes to play.
