Longleaf Golf & Family Club
About
Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

Great Back 9
early-season conditions were excellent greens were good, pace of play was phenomenal definitely a course to play, love to play againwhen course is fully grownin
Playing on my Birthday
Beautiful day, great friends, staff was very friendly, course in good shape, had a great day
VERY WELCOMING!
US Kids, which you should all Google and become familiar with if you're not already, bought this course a couple of years ago and has done great stuff. The tees, seven in all and many hybrid (combination) options, ,are innovative and encouraging for all.
Couple of funky holes on the front nine, mainly due to routing around housing, on the front nine. Glad the US Kids crew reversed the ninth.
1st timer
Friendly staff to greet you. The course was in good shape and they had the greens in great shape. Overall good experience.
Not bad, but there are better options
The new greens, installed in 2017 were in very good shape. The fairways are just OK, and the course overall is just not that visually appealing. Was it a bad deal for $90 in peak season? No, but there are so many other good options in that price range, I doubt our group will include it again for our annual 3-day outing.
Love the Many Tees, but They Need More Signs!
Everyone at this Golf Course was very friendly and accommodating! The cart paths are mostly sand and some were difficult to maneuver.
While the holes were marked, it was sometime difficult to determine where to go for the next hole. We spent 15 minutes trying to find the 5th Hole. We ended up have to ask a group and had to back track several holes to get back to where we needed to be. Suggest they have smaller directional signs showing those who are not use to this course where in the heck the next hole is located!
Other than the hole mix-up, it was an enjoyable afternoon!
Great Golf Course
Golf course was in really good shape for end of November. Greens are very fast and need to take some time to practice putting to get the speed down. Always enjoy the layout of this course and it has been slightly redone which was nice.
Most improved
Fantastic course. Nice mix of long and short holes. Par 3s are really tough. Wonderful improvements to the clubhouse. Greens are great. Stay out of the rough. Can eat your ball. Plenty of tees to choose from. Par 35 front and par 37 back...
Enjoyable round. Worth the play.
I have always stayed away from Longleaf based on word of mouth around town about conditions. Went and tried it out today, and the new greens and the fairways didn't disappoint. If you go out there expecting to be able to stick and spin, wait a few months as they are newly laid Bermuda. We were expecting this when we went out there so I'm not mad. The layout was fun. The 208 yard uphill par 3 was no fun not being able to hold a green. The Par 5, 5th is probably my only layout dislike. Rough is silly in some places. Like US Open silly.
4:00 tee time & was greeted with " have to have carts in by 7:00 (an hour plus before dark) because the cart guy wants to get home! Fairways in very good condition / Putting surfaces worst I've played on in 20+ years. The mix of bent & poa made putts react like a ball in a pinball machine. The randomness of trying to make a putt outside 2' turned the round into a practice session.
First Time at Longleaf
Nice course layout very different front and back 9. A lot of bounce down the middle adds a nice 10-15 to your usual drive. Playing in to the greens is tricky as I found the fringes to be soft but the greens hard. The greens are to be re-laid during the summer which should improve the true roll on the greens.
Great Shape
Course conditions are pretty good right now - fairways were surprisingly firm and I got more roll than expected off the tee. Rough is high and tough - as it should be. Sandtraps were great. Greens were much better than I had expected - based on earlier reviews. Greens all had grass on them, were firm, and somewhat fast. New Titlest range balls ( though not many in a bag ) Looks as though they have been putting money into the course - I was pleasantly surprised with the overall course conditions, and will definitely be back.
Fantastic Staff
Always enjoy the layout of the course in that the front and back nines are quite different. Course conditions were quite good with the exception of several of the greens being in rough shape.
bad course
Course was in bad shape greens were bad. Would not play this course again.
Could have been so much better...Terrible greens but nice course
We got on for $25 through Group Golfer. Not many people on the course and managed to start a bit earlier. We started practice putting on a hybrid Bermuda green but someone came by to tell us that wasn't the grass on the actual greens so switched to the bent grass greens. They were extremely slow and someone should have told us the actual course greens weren't nothing like the practice greens. Those greens ranged from hardly having any grass to being areated and having some grass. I think maybe a few greens were actually puttable and one green inexplicably was hybrid Bermuda. Huh? Counted four different kind of grasses on many of the greens: bent, Bermuda (weedy and whatever encroached from the fairway) and goosegrass. The goosgrass patches were so big that it was like putting on an obstacle course.
Fairways were in great shape but the bunkers had practically no sand and what was there was compacted. The rough is deep and very penalizing and if you hit your ball into it be sure to know where it is because it's easy to lose.
Be sure to visit the bar area, even if your not a drinker. The bar itself is old and wooden and the horse pictures on the wall illustrate Longleaf's history.
If I knew the greens were in better shape I would return. Otherwise, there are better choices in the Pinehurst area.
Greens in bad shape
The front side greens all had multiple bare spots and some greens had very little grass at all. This is suprising considering how well they are usually maintained. Also suprising seeing how US Kids Golf is due into town in just a few days. One other thing of note, is the rough was so thick and long, you could lose your ball or have no shot at all from just a foot or two off the fairway, or from just off the green.
Longleaf in Pinehurst
It was an enjoyable course. I would play it again. Had a great time.
Always Pleasant Experience
As always a dependable golf course that always delivers a fantastic experience. As a side note the oatmeal raisin cookies in the club house are homemade and AMAZING!!!
