Longleaf Golf & Family Club
About
Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

bad course
Course was in bad shape greens were bad. Would not play this course again.
Could have been so much better...Terrible greens but nice course
We got on for $25 through Group Golfer. Not many people on the course and managed to start a bit earlier. We started practice putting on a hybrid Bermuda green but someone came by to tell us that wasn't the grass on the actual greens so switched to the bent grass greens. They were extremely slow and someone should have told us the actual course greens weren't nothing like the practice greens. Those greens ranged from hardly having any grass to being areated and having some grass. I think maybe a few greens were actually puttable and one green inexplicably was hybrid Bermuda. Huh? Counted four different kind of grasses on many of the greens: bent, Bermuda (weedy and whatever encroached from the fairway) and goosegrass. The goosgrass patches were so big that it was like putting on an obstacle course.
Fairways were in great shape but the bunkers had practically no sand and what was there was compacted. The rough is deep and very penalizing and if you hit your ball into it be sure to know where it is because it's easy to lose.
Be sure to visit the bar area, even if your not a drinker. The bar itself is old and wooden and the horse pictures on the wall illustrate Longleaf's history.
If I knew the greens were in better shape I would return. Otherwise, there are better choices in the Pinehurst area.
Greens in bad shape
The front side greens all had multiple bare spots and some greens had very little grass at all. This is suprising considering how well they are usually maintained. Also suprising seeing how US Kids Golf is due into town in just a few days. One other thing of note, is the rough was so thick and long, you could lose your ball or have no shot at all from just a foot or two off the fairway, or from just off the green.
Longleaf in Pinehurst
It was an enjoyable course. I would play it again. Had a great time.
Always Pleasant Experience
As always a dependable golf course that always delivers a fantastic experience. As a side note the oatmeal raisin cookies in the club house are homemade and AMAZING!!!
I love this course.
I play often. Not well but often. I've played easier courses. I've played harder courses. You won't find friendlier staff. I'm hoping no one reads this review as I'd like to keep this course a secret. I've played the course several times now and not enough of an expert or wordsmith to tell you why but I love this course. Also helps that we played early the day after Thanksgiving, had beautiful weather and the course to ourselves. Made for a great weekend in Pinehurst.
Longleaf construction
A lot of construction going on especially on back 9 which detracts from play. Seems they are going head on into encouraging Kids to play.
First 9 condition not as good as previous years.
Excellent all-around
Excellent course, we play it on our yearly outing.
Course under construction
I wish Golfnow would reveal at the time of booking that the course is under a major renovation. Give the extent of the construction, I was shocked that the course is still open to play. Most of the tee boxes have been moved to almost the middle of fairways. From the tips, the course is playing less than 5000 Yds. There is a temporary green on the 18th hole at the 150 yd marker.
I have played this course earlier in the year and it's not a bad course for the money. However, I would stay away right now for aleast the remainder of the year when all the construction is completed.
Under construction
The course was in decent shape with nice soft greens, but almost every hole had tee box construction ongoing. When the construction is complete and driving range is open this will be a great course.
ImprovementS on going
They are making many upgrades to the tee boxes and have added forward tees to help the novice player. Plus the have plans for a wee course, they are headed in the right direction.
It's a nice course.
I'd like to give it a higher rating, but we were a twosome who were behind a foursome that had no concern for anyone else on the golf course. As a result, our round took four and a half hours and we waited on every hole. It overshadowed everything else about the course.
Super course
We played this course for the first time.. Front 9was nice but the real challenges started on the back!
Don't hesitate to play it!
Great design
Played for $20 in July (golfnow.com rate). Love the history and how the horse track remnants are incorporated into the design on the front nine. Back nine has much more elevation and challenge. They are currently doing construction, adding new putting and practice area. They are turning the 18th green into one of the practice greens so the temporary 18th green is mowed down grass in middle of 18 fairway until new green is built. Wondered how that "green" would putt but my son chipped in for an "eagle" and I made a 15 footer that rolled better than some of the aerated greens around Pinehurst!! Overall, I've enjoyed Longleaf both times I've played it. It has some character. I can look back on photos and instantly know that they were taken at Longleaf. Would definitely play it again especially for $20!
Great track!
Overall a great experience, construction going on so rates were super cheap! Can't wait to go back when everything's finished!!
Nice for spraying the ball a little
Nice course, needs a little work, but it recently changed owners. Had not played in a while, so this course lets you spray it a bit on the front, but you better tighten the nozzle on the back. THE STAFF THERE IS ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND KNOWS HOW TO TREAT PEOPLE ESPECIALLY THE WOMAN BEHIND THE COUNTER.
Longleaf1
It was a cloudy day with some rain. The course was in great shape and it is well laid out. I enjoyed this course and would recommend to anyone wanting to play a very nice course.
This course was recently sold
The course has not been maintained, conditions not up to standards of other courses in the Pinehurst area. I would not waste your money playing this course.
Golfers Beware
Beware if playing this course in the Spring. They had the audacity to charge us $68 for playing on nothing more than dirt. It appeared they had rolled the fairways, you couldn't build, make, or have a lie anywhere on the course. I'm sure this course is fine once it grows in. This time of year, no more than a $35 greens fee. Very disappointed, will never play this one again.........
Great Fun
My husband and I live near by in a local CC Community. We have heard good things about the course and wanted to try it out. As beginners to golf, we enjoyed the wide fairways. The front nine was nice and level and the course became more challenging on the back nine. The staff was friendly and we will be back to play this one again.
