Longleaf Golf & Family Club
About
Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

Good Course
nice course , driving range , great club house to get a snack or meal
Good
The course was in great condition except for the putting greens a lot of them were bumpy with areas with no grass at all. When I arrived I had to wait on my playing partner and that didn't go over well swith the man at the register checking us in he insisted that I go ahead and pay for both of us even though he hadn't shown up as of yet which I thought was rude. I purchased a coke out if a vending machine for 2.00 that ok thought was a 20oz and came out a 12 oz can coke. A little on the high end side for me at least. Great views on the back 9 though that made up for some of our disappointment. Thanks though for booking it on golf now we saved 20.00 a piece on the round.
Nice starter course for your Pinehurst vacation
Front nine is flat and features the rails from an old race track. Back nine has considerably more character with substantial elevation changes and severe doglegs. Would encourage the course to create a hybrid yardage with its own slope and rating as 6600 yds (blue tees) is too long for most golfers and 6000 yds (white tees) is too short. We created our own by playing all the par 4s from the blues and par 3s and 5s from the whites; worked well for us. Although the greens were recently aerated, they were receptive and playable. Staff was friendly.
Fun Course
Fun course to play. Fairly open, but OB is in play on a few holes. #14 is a bit silly but different (don't try to cut the corners). Greens were bent grass and were in OK shape, rolled slower than I'm used to but didn't expect otherwise when playing in August. Overall good experience, friendly staff. Solid warm-up course if you are taking a golf trip to Pinehurse.
Our favorite course
We had an early tee time - and were able to play without any waiting all 18 - and finished just shy of 4 hours. Course is in excellent shape.
Great course
Staff is always friendly and very helpful. Golf course is always in decent shape and is a really nice track!
Course ok for the money
The course was in decent shadow but had multiple bare spots even around the greens. The greens were cut high (no doubt due to the summer heat) and therefore were inconsistent in feel. The clubhouse staff were very friendly. Overall a good experience but the course could use some addressing.
like the course but Greens?
I played this course a lot. When the greens are in good shape, its greens are great, fast and predictable breaks. But right now I cannot say that. Some Greens are bumpy, spotty, and all are slow. The course itself is in decent shape for a public facility.
This could be a great course.
The greens and fringe were in good shape; however, the fairway on most holes was weedy and in many places bare. This course desperately needs water.
Good value
Greens were slow. Otherwise good conditions. Almost empty for a Saturday afternoon.
Longleaf
I have been playing this course for 30 years and will continue to do so!!!
Longleaf describes the grass
I was in the Pinehurst area for a charity tournament, so my foursome decided on a practice round here at Longleaf. The overall look and layout of the course was fine. It's built on the ground of the former race track for the Village of Pinehurst, and there are several holes on the front nine with track rails and other pieces left to give you a feel of the place. Just like the grass you saw in the US Open, there were also brown areas in the fairways. The biggest problem were the greens. They were slow due to the length of the grass. It appeared that they had not been cut in some while.
Overall we had a good experience. I just wish that the greens had putted better.
As a follow up, when i drove past this course the next morning I saw that they were cutting them.
long leaf at the Belmont
Why did I say Belmont, there are white square tee boxes, yardage poles on both sides of the fairways and an old horse racing fence all over the front nine. It was a great course and lots of fun to play but I got tired of seeing the white posts everywhere. Was distracting at times and felt like I was playing a chess match Lol.
If that doesn't bother you, great course. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Good course. Not too hard
Good course. Greens little slow and diagram of holes would help on tee signs but overall nice course that isn't too hard.
Casual course
Low key course. Not much when it comes to conditions but was great for just playing a leisurely round. People were nice and responsive.
Jayhawk invades Tar Heel land
This is the fourth, and best course I've played here this trip. The greens were outstanding. The fairways and tee boxes were also superior to the other places I played this week. The price I paid was (almost) embarrassingly low for this quality course. I have kids stationed at Bragg, so I'll be back. When I am, I'll play this one again, no doubt!
This course was very friendly to play
I enjoyed playing this course for the second time. Had a very pleasant day from the white tees. However, because the greens were not mowed, it was fuzzy, bumpy and slow when we tried putting the greens. What would have been a wonderful round was reduced to a pleasant 3 and 1/2 hours playing with my good friend. Wish the greens would have rolled smoother and consistent.
Last minute decision
We made a last minute decision to add another round to our golf trip to North Carolina and chose longleaf. An early Sunday morning tee time ensured a fast round. The front nine wasn't too interesting. Kind of wide open but the back nine was more interesting with se dog legs and trees to negotiate. Some shot shaping was necessary. As a 15 HC female folder I enjoyed the 3 par 3'a in the back nine. My husband, a 4 HC, thought three were too many.
The course was in pretty good shape considering the greens were plugged the week before - and were slower than were used to. There were some bare areas on the Bermuda fairways but that may be due to the time of year (early June) after a wet winter.
Thanks
