Dan Maples, architect of the nationally acclaimed Pit Golf Links, has created another masterpiece only minutes from the Village of Pinehurst. Longleaf Golf & Family Club was formerly the site of Starland Farms, for years the training ground of some of the country's top thoroughbreds. As a tribute to its colorful history, Maples incorporated some of the features and flavor of the old facility into the golf course, including part of the fence and training track. The front nine at Longleaf was designed in the Scottish open style with subtly rolling fairways. The back nine, in contrast, is heavily tree-lined and dramatically elevated. Ron Whitten of Golf Digest called Longleaf "...the most playable course in Pinehurst."

Was a horse track

Mostly flat. Well kept. Nice choice for lunch. Has some homes skirting fairways, so ability to hit straight a plus.

Course in excellent shape

The staff was excellent. Already had my printout and confirmed the ttee time. Range bal bag a little on the small side. But the course was in great shape. Greens were pristine and smooth to the roll.
Course is still very challenging. Bunkers in great shape also.
A very enjoyable day.

Rated this course as average

The front nine was open and average. The back nine was through the woods, interesting and more challenging. Greens were not consistent.

wide open not a lot of trouble good for the money

Golf now has a lot of good deals for this course. Front nine completely wide open but gets a little tighter on the back nine. Bigger greens and kind of tough to read, pretty sandy but it is match. Played last 2 years and like the course enough to keep coming back. Lots of play so can be kind of slow at times, but with no one in front we played in less then 3 hours. Lot of courses in the area but with the openness of the front nine its a confidence builder for one of the first rounds of the season.

Good course, great value!

We had a great experience at Longleaf. Play was slow so we joined up with the group in front of us who happened to be an LPGA pro and her husband. She played from the same tees as us and needless to say she spanked us. They were great company and we had a great time playing with them and even more fun hearing her ride her husband. I still don't like getting beat by a girl but over all it was a great experience.

Great deal

Greens had been aerated, which probably explains the great price, but we're still playable. Tees and fairways excellent for the time of year (Feb).

We're behind a couple of slower groups, but they let us through.

The fairway has great condition

I played with heavy fog. So I can't find the green. If there was course map, I can better play.

First Time Playing

For $30 it was worth the drive.

The time of year made it tough to appreciate the course fully.

The front nine is good challenge

Pro Shop Staff very welcoming. Range tee area in poor condition....no over-seeding for winter. Irrigation runoff on back nine created muddy areas around most greens which meant approach shots short of greens often plugged. Back nine very tight with houses and large trees.

Nice variety between the two nines, both enjoyable

The cart staff brought a cart down to our vehicle but there was a bag drop available. The Pro Shop staff was very helpful. Got us out ahead of time, gave us an overview of the course, identifying any challenging holes and how best to play them. The front nine is relatively flat and easy to play and the back nine has more holes carved through the trees but they still were not too difficult. The greens were good but a little furry and slower than we were used to. There were ball washers on every hole but unfortunately they were dry. The on-course facilities were clean and well situated. The carts were good but they had no GPS. All in all, the course was fun to play and a very good value for the money.

Former horse farm

Another great course from Dan Maples. The front nine is open with some elevation change, with many features from the old horse training days incorporated into the layout. The back nine begins with a downhill hole leading you into a totally different landscape. The holes have more elevation change and are much tighter.
