Southern Pines Golf Club

About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Still getting it ready but great layout and challenge
I had not played it before the renovations, but really liked the course now. They're still working on it, some areas betqeen holes were muddy but course itself was pristine.
And wow, challenging course that was really fun to play. Good elevation changes on some holes, false fronts as expected.
Could not ask for à better chalanging course, even in the first week of December the
Course conditions were excellent. Had a great deal from Golf Now.Recommend
Looking good
Not quite there yet But will be so nice next summer Redo is well don’t
So much fun
This course is amazing. The redesign has made it one of the best in the area. Play it now before the rates go up
Always fun
This is now one of the best courses in the area. Play it now before the rates go up.
Amazing
This course used to be a low point in the area, but now is in my top 3. The greens are pure and fast, and the renovations are fantastic. This is a must play for the money when making a trip here.
Played yesterday for first time post-restoration. This course was already a favorite in the area beforehand, but now it sits just behind #2 and #4 for me. I think this course sits on the best piece of land in Pinehurst and has the most potential because of it. The layout and topography of the place remind me of Augusta - I'm serious. Removing trees really opened up the course and especially helped the par 3's, which I consider now to be absolutely top-notch. The new greens were perfect yesterday, and the resurfacing made them play much smaller than they appeared. Overall, I always felt this course could be so much better than it was, and it was already a great Ross course. I'm glad someone was able to invest the proper resources to help this place reach its potential. It's not fully there yet since it's only a month into reopening, but you can tell it's not far off.
Great bones but needs some tlc going forward.
A wonderful restoration. With the right maintenance this would be the nr 2 premier course in the Sandhills, right behind Pinehurst #2. The course is not finished and many of the "waste areas" are already covered with weeds. The sand was so beaten up with unraked footprints that my group lost balls in them. The greens were a great improvement over their previous versions - undulating, interesting and putting very true. The fairways are sparse in places and will need a while to grow in. They were also overly wet and very weedy in places. I hope the owners realize what a gem they have and put some money into maintenance. It's only been open a few weeks and is already looking worn.
Donald Ross Redo done well
First time I’ve ever played course. Compares well with Mid Pines and Pine Needles. Has the Donald Ross vibe on every hole. Almost Every green has a false front you must clear. Greens, fairway Angles and views are classic Ross. Work still being done to the course. Can’t wait to play it again, and again in future as the course matures.
Great time playing this masterpiece.
10th hole snack bar
Cory was a really welcome sight. No water anywhere on the course, but she gave great service at the snack bar. What a babe
18th hole flag was 4 paces from the back right. Not really a player friendly placement.
Good Ross Course For Less than Half the Cost of Pinehurst, Pine Needles/MidPines
If you love Ross courses, you'll love Southern Pines GC. It's classic Ross: moderately challenging approaches to challenging greens. The greens here are not as dramatically turtle-backed as those at Pinehurst #2 or Pine Needles, but they will keep you working.
Recently renovated greens means greens were very firm and a bit shaggy. Soft greens are better for scoring, of course, but these weren't unduly punitive, and they will get better in time. Overall it's a a great layout, classic old-time inland Carolina golf a la Ross.
Playing time was an excruciating 5 hours, with several bottlenecks (holes #2 and #10 in particular) with groups stacked up at the tee box. Normally I'd find this really annoying but hey, I played a great Ross course for less than $200. I'm happy with that.
Course Is Finished.
Course opened up 9/7 from a year long rebuild. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in great condition. They are still needing to do cart paths but overall the course is in good condition! Hope this helps
Renovation is 5 Star!
I've played this course for over 20 years, it is the best it has ever been! Today was the first day since the renovation and it was awesome! Cosmetically the greens still has some growing in to do, along with some fairways and waste areas but it was amazing! Get out out and play it!!
Construction
Golf Now didn’t tell me this was under construction - course will be amazing once greens are finished. Stopped playing after the first hole when I realized that there were no greens… I’ll come back in 6 months to check this out.
Staff is friendly -
