Great course for the money
Played there earlier today, even though it was a wet cold day, still enjoyed it. Greens roll real nice, and true. It will challenge even a good golfer, for their first round, because of some elevation differences.
Greens are beautiful!
Lost alot of new golf balls in the dormant rough just off the fairways. The fairways are dry and thin with "winter" grass, and when balls would roll off the fairways, sometimes it was impossible to find the ball. Other golfers we spoke with were having the same problem. Oh well, just the nature of the beast I guess. Otherwise the course was in it's usual great shape. The greens are always in great shape. We enjoy the scenery and the up and downhill battles against the course. Will return as often as possible. Tee times on GolfNow.com are always VERY reasonable. Very enjoyable course to play. Thanks for keeping the course in good shape!!
way to slow
the course is very nice and the greens are great, the people too.
the tee times are to close together, meaning 4 groups on a lot of par 4 holes and 2 groups waiting to play the par 3s. 5 hours is to long and you can not get into any rythum at all.
Traditional American style layout.
I have played this course many times and I like it very much. I have fun playing it and always enjoy the rounds. This is my style of course, not overly difficult for the average golfer to play, it has generous fairways, limited bunkering, no blind shots, and one is not forced to play the course a specific way. The greens are medium-fast and are very consistent. I will play from both the blue and white tees, but I find that due to my short driving distances the white tees offer me the best opportunity to post a reasonably low score. Playing from the blue tees definitely adds strokes to my score but I like playing the longer clubs, so it offers a nice change.
great
excelent course, first time there, and a great time, played well on most holes, the first par 5 was a challange not knowing what to expect. some holes a little short for par 4 but a lot of fun and a beautyful course.
Great Challenge
I love this course. Plenty long with thick rough. They maintain it very well.
Fast course, great staff, awesome price
I had just finished some business in Charlotte and was driving back to Blacksburg. I found this course on Golfnow and got an early afternoon round. The course was surprisingly empty for a Friday afternoon. I was able to get out as a single and didn't run into a group in front of me until hole 14. Note: I arrived an hour early for my tee-time and the gentleman in the clubhouse didn't give me problems about it; he honored the Golfnow rate.
Overall, I thought the course was in excellent shape. The fairways are well maintained; the tee boxes are flat and have yardages to trouble; the course is moderately bunkered and has a few water hazards that can be tricky. The greens were slower than I like but that's because they recently aerated. The staff was terrific.
There are a few memorable holes on the course: A par three that has a significant drop (number 5?). The green is enormous, making club selection very difficult. The par 5 that follows it has a misleading tee shot, and a tempting second shot. The final hole is no giveaway. I had to par it in order to shoot even on the back. Didn't. Still a little frustrated that I didn't hit the fairway. Oh, yes. Hit the fairways! The rough is punishing - not because of the length but because of the density. Beware.
Areas for improvement: the bunkers are deep in some places, shallow in others, and the sand is not consistent through the course (am I really complaining about hazards? Yes, but that's only because there's not much to complain about here). I would have liked to see a little more detail on the scorecard. As a first timer out there, it was tough to tell what the holes look like. I think that cost me a stroke or two.
If you're in the area and looking for a quick round, I highly recommend this course.
